How Politicians Support Elder Abuse-Medicare Fraud in Nursing Homes

Updated on December 8, 2017

Do Politics Support Elder Abuse?

The AHCA ( Agency For Health Care Administration) is the agency responsible for processing Medicare and Medicaid payments. This same agency is also responsible for inspecting nursing facilities for compliance with Medicare and Medicaid standards of care in Florida.

The FHCA Florida Health-care Association is a large Association dedicated to quality long term care in Florida.

In a Florida nursing home owned by a past President and a present board member of the Florida Health-care Association residents, I suspect, are receiving substandard care, being denied their right to see a dentist, denied their right to talk on the phone in a private setting, overly medicated, and, among other things, left to lay in their own feces.

In this particular home it is true that a 76 year old man, within a couple of weeks , fell from his wheel-chair two times, was denied the right to use a telephone, left to lay in his own feces and transferred to the hospital entirely too late.

This man was presented to the hospital ER, directly from the nursing home, severely dehydrated, lethargic, with Ce-diff, Pneumonia, Hypertension, positive for antibiotic resistant pseudomonas and a stage three bedsore.

To say the least; nearly dead. Sadly, after 40 days of suffering from this horribly substandard care, he did pass away.

His Wife; in this same nursing facility was denied visits to see her husband, denied her right to see a dentist, prescribed 12 medications (seriously over medicated) and was admitted into rehabilitation.

She very obviously did not need rehabilitation.

Medicare pays only for rehabilitation, not long term care. Therefore, this 85 year old lady was admitted into the rehabilitation she didn't truly qualify for (Medicare Fraud).

The Nursing home administrators, though already receiving Medicare payment for both the elderly man and his wife then attempted to exploit money from them through their immediate family members.

How can a board member and past president of the Florida Health-Care Association own and be allowed to operate a facility with substandard care that commits Medicare fraud and attempts to exploit the elderly?

How can the AHCH continue to process our Medicare dollars into payments for such substandard facilities?

I have the answer folks:!

Political Contributions .... Big ones.

The politicians in Washington who are preaching good health care for our elderly and stopping Medicare waste and fraud are the very ones taking political contributions from the owners of these substandard nursing facilities and thus; allowing them to operate and steal from Medicare!

The owner of this particular nursing home ,lets simply say, has positioned himself snugly around over $200,000 in political contributions just this past year. That amounts to nearly a quarter of a million dollars.

He himself, made a 5,000 contribution to the agency of the very board he sits on,

There are many more personal contributions to similar agencies. Too many to list in this one article.

Politicians, State Senators, board members and presidents of health care agencies should be on a watch list as potential Medicare and Medicaid fraud participants!

Millions of dollars in Medicare prescription drug funding is wasted through nursing homes each and every year.

One example, the 85 year old lady taking twelve different medications while in the nursing facility, paid for through a Medicare prescription drug plan. Since leaving the nursing facility her prescriptions have been adjusted properly and she now takes only six.

If you take the hundreds of thousands of nursing home residents in America who are being overly medicated and medicate them properly Medicare will be savings millions of dollars each and every year in prescription drug costs.

If Rehabilitation funding is cut off from these nursing facilities I predict a severe drop in the amount of residents admitted into rehabilitation who do not truly qualify for it. This would amount to substantial savings of Medicare funds.

Drop Medicare Funding To Nursing Homes!

Stop the Fraud,

Stop the Waste and Demand Decent Care For Our Elderly Citizens!

Do not allow Political Contributions to be a back door into stealing and wasting Our Medicare dollars!

As I Said -The Owner Of This Facility Sits On The Board Of The Healh Care Association

Nursing home neglect and abuse needs to be stopped. As the baby boomers age, we have the opportunity to speak up for them and help to turn things around

My father had an open wound to the bone that the nursing home facility did not make family aware of that was infected when taken to Emergency room on Friday 4-20-12.He was admitted to hospital and died Sunday 4-22-12 .Prior to being admitted to nursing home he was seen by a wound doctor and was healing well pictures were taken at office no open wound in photos nursing home said he came into facility with wound. When my father was admitted my family and I was told a wound specialist was on staff .He would be treated there. The Doctor who treated my Father in the Emergency room said the wound smelled as if it had not been treated. My Father was a sick man, this infection speed up his life ending remarks made by doctor at hospital after his death he was too weak to fight infection we knew nothing about and was not being treated for. Upon requesting medical records found other things on 4/3/12 in Father's chart said he had a bowl infection nurse at facility said this was why he wasn't eating we were never told. Staff would constantly say he refused to eat again we knew nothing of this infection. Regardless if he had small time to live we were never given information that would have allowed us to let him live his last days in peace. My father complained often about the staff not really caring for him. On his way to the hospital he told the Ambulance attendant he did not like that place they don't care for you.

Honestly - I went to work at one facility here in Oregon - it finally was shut down - went to apply at another one and man was that horrible - those places give me night mares my only advice is if there is a family member willing to care for your mother medicaid will pay them under the relative foster care program - they do not want to pay much though you have to do a little negotiating with them but you can get a bit more than their base pay

We recently admitted 92 year old mom into Osprey Court, located in McMinnville, Oregon. Im very unhappy/perplexed/stressed/angry at what we have experienced! Nancy (head manager) removed Mom's phone, and had her cat (best "friend" of 10 years) removed....Nancy said cat was causing problems (false), and also said Mom was dialing 911- but upon my inquiry with Yamhill Co dispatch, they said there is absolutely NO RECORD of any such calls beiong made! Also, they took all her personal soap out of her personal bathroom- how does a person wash after using toilet ?? Also other problems......please help with knowledgeable comments/suggestions ?? We are looking for another (good) assissted living facility that will accept Mom's medicade. Thanks, RWK .

to nurse discouraged shame on you.telling everyone if you or others speak up you are afraid of losing your jobs.that puts you in the same catagory as the other greedy corrupt people running these places.so your job is more important than the lives of the people who are victims of corporate greed and the corrupt people protecting this system.try morals and god.we went to war because of the horrible things hitler and germany were doing to people and the whole world was told.yet what is happening to our elderly in these places is the same thing and this is america. it is being decided by a group of people who deserves to live and who deserves to die after being abused and falsley diagnoised with symtoms and illnesses to get the full amount insurance and medicare allows then after the government funds have been exceeded rest assured our loved ones are murdered.this goes right to the top and it needs to be exposed and stopped. Our country was founded so this type of thing and others would not happen to people again.I was raised to respect and care for our elderly and disabled yet they are just prey for the greedy cororations, doctors and people running them and the corrupt justice system, law enforcement, attorneys and politicans involved in protecting these crimes and although their is laws that this should be reported their is nothing done because a job is more inportant so better to go along with the flow as an attorney once told me than to be cast off as a trouble maker.well guess what I guess we are trouble makers going against the corrruption controlling our society but until the truth comes out for everyone to really see it could be their loved one next as it has happened to us on this site and others.lets start exchanging ideas and phone numbers on sites. so perhaps we can come together and change what is happening to the least of gods people and if you read the bible and live by the lords laws you know what the least of his people means.and god forgive those that are doing this.

WOW I can hear your discouragement - and I understand nurses are overwhelemed and overworked - this kind of thing really needs to be addressed - but for now , me, heck I worked in a home for elderly and it was too emotionally disturbing for me , I would suggest maybe finding a new line of work - I know it sounds bad , but thats what I did - not easy , but my morals won't allow me to work in that kind of crap, the administrators need to be repremanded, new laws need to be put into effect, younger people need to realize that they too stand a great chance of getting old and if they do not start caring about older people now, they stand a great chance of ending up the same way , thanks for the comment and I am so sorry for your feeling trapped - but - there are other lines of work withing the health care field - just remember that :)

I have worked in nursing homes as a LPN for 21 years, I work on a hall that has 30 patients. I am responsible fo`r medicating and also doing all of there treatments. a lot of times we are working long hours and doing the best that we can. Can anyone take care of 30 children?

and no I am not saying that they are children, but most of them urinate and defecate on themselves and can not feed themselves. The nursing assistants have 10- 13 patients, and yes this is where the abuse begins. A lot of abuse and neglect in nursing homes is unintentional. The nursing assistants and nurses are overwhelmed. If one of my patients get sick, that takes me away from the other 29. A lot of families are aware what is going on and I'll have maybe three families demanding that there loved one is taking care of immediatley and again it takes away from the ones that don't get any visitor's. The negative attitudes come from the nursing assistant's being underpaid, overworked and disrespected. Nursing assistant's hourly wage is 7- 12 hour. State inspections are a joke. When state arrives all of administrative staff come out and help with baths and feeding, and when state leaves the facility they sit back down. I feel so bad for the substandard care, I give my all. When placing a love one in a nursing home if the family can, go in and feed your loved one, if you can bathe them, inspect there skin, alert staff of anything abnormal, especially redness on heels, or buttocks, that is the beginning of a bedsore, make sure they are turned from side, back, side. make sure you get a copy of there medications, know what labs and how often they are to be done. A missed PT/Inr could be fatal to someone on blood thinners such as coumadin, arixthra, or Lovenox. I know it sounds like a lot to do, but this is what I have done and seen, I'm on the inside of this storm. If you don't insure that these are being done, your love one could end up half fed, developing bedsores, that are hard to heal especially if they are diabetic, or have poor nutrition and poor car. The cooperations are making a lot of money but they don't have to look in the eyes of the elderly. The new thing is that they want to get rid of the longterm residents that don't require rehab. They want the short term residents that medicare pay big money for. They are telling us now not to send residents to the hospital because they don't want to pay for transporting them or lose money for an empty bed. They will go as far in some facilities to have the family to sign papers for possible bed loss. If you have a love one in a nursing home you can request at anytime to have them sent to hospital or if staff is moving to slow call 911. They don't care about your love ones there just a number. nursing homes are businesse out to make that all mighty dollar. one of the seven deadly sins is greed, and that's what they are operating off of, forgetting that one day that they are also going to age and need care. Any staff that is outspoken will lose there job, so I'm trapped and highly discourged and it's getting worse by the day.

Having been a Social Services Director in nursing homes, I must say you are right on in this write. I even have written a book concerning how things Must change and how the state inspections are a big joke. All the inspections do is make it Look like they are on top of things. Excellent write. Traditional nursing homes Have to change and change Now.

I am glad you brought this story to light. I have been hearing about Medicare corruption for such a long time and politics are much of the problem. It is a terrible situation and I don't see it getting better under national health care. There will just be more fraud in other areas I think. Excellent hub.

It's time the Calif Governor explain why the Attorney General never prosecuted Sun Healthcare Group Inc (SUNH) for violating it's state injunction in 2003 causing countless patient deaths in a Newport Beach Sunbridge facility. Political corruption is my belief. The current injunction was derived through fraud and should be considered nil and void. Sun needs to pay for the deaths they caused that I witnessed: Evelyn Calvert, my mother, Richard Laga, Betty Harness, the man in Rm 2-B Oct 2003 etc... and the CEO and Risk Manager should be fired for their willful misconduct and gross negligence in these deaths. The CEO passed on threats to me in mediation causing me to lose wrongful death and my mother's pain & suffering compensation. He needs to sit in prison for this.

dear sicoftheuneducated stop lieing to people you know exactly what you are doing in those nursing home to people drugging them experimenting on them abusing them and murdering them and getting paid by them.first of all your attitude tells me you do not even belong working there because you are the exact type that is pissed at the job you do which tells me you are exactly one of these people that are doing this to our loved ones.and let me tell you within a three week period my father had a bedsore an arm that looked like it was broken and bleeding and within one day yes one day a piece of his lip was cut out and I say that because it is true.he was drugged so that they could keep murdering him without a fight.I had a nurse who cared and took pictures and pleaded with me that someone was intentionly doing this and when I tried to have my dad moved they told they would have to make arrangments to have him moved giving me phone numbers to call doctors and get permission to have him moved.while i left my dad to do this and upon my return they stopped my fathers heart with an overdose of drugs you know what i am saying is true.you gave yourself away of what kind of person you are. there for the pay. you state medicare and goverment are to blame yet you are because you know because of goverment this is happening to our elderly and you are a part of it so you say perhaps better treatment if more money shame on you!

you all keep calling this abuse, malpractice, wrongful deaths but the fact of the matter is it is murder of our elderly loved ones.and Why? well I will tell you wake up america these places are being run by corporations backed by legal, judical, law enforcment and yes very high powered politicians who are stealing from the american people through medicare and medicaid fraud.its horrible how they get to abuse, hurt and murder and then charge thousands upon thousands of dollars after they get rid of the evidence your loved one. How? murder, and they have the laws in place to get away with it people start investigating what is going on in america to the elderly the tragidies that people are suffering and the powerful covering it up both my parents suffered the same fate and I found out how lawyers, doctors, hospitals, judges, and very powerful people were connected and involed in my parents death. they were all associated with each other. not letting me bring justice to my parents.I was and my family also are being threatened into silence with attempts on our lives and harrasment in ways you would not believe.I promised my mother and father I will bring forth the crimes that have been committed against them and others like them and I will die trying if need be. I pray every day to god for the strength to go on for the nightmares of how my helpless parents died in the hands of murderers and to allow me the forgiveness towards these people for the things they are doing and for him to stop what is being done to his people he guides me everyday to wait on him and through my faith in him I will let as many others know that they are not the only ones this has or is happening to it is time the american people realize what truly is happening.god bless all and if someone can help in any way to stop this please please help god bless

My mother also died from the neglect of a nursing home. The CEO sent an employee, Julie Campbell, who is also the manager of his Political Action Committee, to apologize for harm done when their blood pressure monitor broke and she had a stroke rendering her unable to swallow the final nine months of her life. I sued for wrongful death 3 yrs later and he threatened me through my corrupt attorney in mediation that they'd harm me if I forced the case to jury trial and prove his willful misconduct, which could get him fired from Sun Healthcare Group Inc, SUNH, a public corporation. Why? Because he had knowingly repeatedly and blatantly violated a California State Injunction killing five patients. The Dept of Justice never punished Sun for this -why? Political corruption.

Read my blogsite how I sued that attorney for malpractice and he died 2 weeks later. I won that case in 2008, where Sun's Medical Director testified Sun killed my mother.

I've requested the OC Grand Jury and OC District Attorney indict Richard K. Matros for perjury, obstruction of justice, manslaughters in January, 2010.

I had an aunt in the '70's who had to endure nursing home abuse. But it was sinister, in a sense, a nurse pitted the family against one another, trying to gain financially from our pain.

Didn't work, but it was difficult for us, and I can't imagine how hard it was for my aunt.

Another nice read Starmi, I am impressed with your gusto! I have worked in NH's for 30 years and have seen much! But I think you have a point about the Medicare...if they need to use the rehab and medication dollars to pay for more staff. With more staff trained to physically work with the residents there would be less need for sedating and unwarranted rehab.

starmi, that morning when I went to get her belongings from the rehab facility, out of nowhere, the sky turned black and started pouring down rain and thundering, it was like the heavens opened up and mourned, and displayed anger. in some amazing way, it comforted me. by the time I drove home, the sky was blue. needless to say, she was an amazing woman and I miss her everyday.

nice work, starmi. my mother was in rehab for many months before she passed away. I believe neglect was involved and yet it's so hard to prove in court. I constantly had to talk to nurses, administrators to find out why something was not done or when something would be done. she ended this life because she had contacted c-difficule and they had not taken blood tests and sent to lab at scheduled time (Easter weekend). she went so quickly and myself and my sons were there at the end, which is another story. she did go with much love and peace, it was sacred. keep talking starme, it's so important.
