The Strange Death of Elisa Lam
January 26th, 2013, San Diego, California
Flying in from San Diego, CA to L.A. was a sight for sore eyes for Elisa Lam. It had been raining here and there over the City of Angels the past few days and the sky opened periodically for sparse sprinkles of rainfall over the next day. The sun was beating the concrete and after landing in Los Angeles, the weather seemed to have made a turn for the better. January in Canada was a lot different for young Elisa Lam when compared to what you are accustomed to in Vancouver during January. Although raining for most of the month before she departed at the airport, she would soon be in sunny California for a change of scenery after a long northern winter. Little did anyone know that she was to never cross the Canadian border again, alive. She had made a post on her TUMBLR account that seemed kind of strange given the outcome of her situation:
“I’m going out tonight
I really hope no creeper comes near me
those Italian and Mexican guys go after you STRONG
Show the slightest inclination and they hound you” – Elisa Lam

There is not too much known about her whereabouts on this day. I uncovered a few details that I am not 100% sure the police or anyone else has noticed and I am going to share them with you. The details are factual according to Elisa Lam’s posts on TUMBLR and the fact that she loved jazz music. Last night she wanted to get out and do something and I think she found exactly what she wanted to do. “The Gaslamp Speakeasy” is in San Diego and is just 2 miles away from the San Diego International Airport. They offer nightly musicians but do not have an online calendar for their events. I found another “speakeasy” style venue 4 miles from the airport called “Seven Grand” who host a wide variety of music so I checked their booking schedule and confirmed that they had a Jazz musician perform on January 26th, 2013, at 10:00pm. This is all speculative determined on what time Elisa boarded the flight to Los Angeles. The flight from San Diego to Los Angeles is typically around an hour. In my personal opinion she could have easily made a night flight after watching a performance at this club and still made an arrival time on Jan. 26th like the LAPD have confirmed. Like I said, this incident is merely a speculation. The musician’s name is Ian Tordella and his group would have been the last known live music that Elisa would have the pleasure of enjoying if my speculation is correct. Here is her TUMBLR post from after a night at “The Speakeasy” in San Diego:
“The Speakeasy WAS AWESOME
except I lost a cellphone
SIGH” – Elisa Lam (Using a male friend’s blackberry that she was given according to the “tags” she posted on this post)
“#and it's not even mine #it's my friends old blackberry #that he's lending to me #and ughhh #well not lend #he doesn't want it anymore #but UGHHH #STUPID #caliblah” – Elisa Lam

She was here for a visit is all that can be said for 100%. Traveling on a budget can be tough and those that have done so can confirm this as fact. Whenever I travel on a strict budget, I typically book at the cheapest hotel room nearest any particular destination I might want to check out or nearest any area of the city that would hold my interest. Anyone could agree with this, I am certain. 21 Year old college student Lam chose to check into The Cecil Hotel in very close proximity to L.A.’s “Skid Row”. The rooms are cheap and she had a scheduled checkout date of February 1st, 2013. From The Cecil Hotel she could explore many things in the “fashion” district which is nearby and The Orpheum Theatre was not too far off either. She was known to be a fan of music and it is rumored that she was in town to meet with a new musician boyfriend. That is speculation and I am not going to speculate this early on in this article. Her parents told authorities that she had planned to go to Santa Cruz next on her trip.

THE CECIL HOTEL
January 29th, 2013, Los Angeles, California
Another day that lends itself to pure speculation and mystery for the public eye as to what Elisa was doing and maybe the answers lie in any undisclosed LAPD documents in the case file. All we know about this day is that she posted to her TUMBLR once again:
“I have arrived in Laland…
and there is a monstrosity of a building next to the place I’m staying
when I say monstrosity mind you I’m saying as in gaudy
but then again it was built in 1928 hence the art deco theme so yes it IS classy but then since it’s LA it went on crack
Fairly certain this is where Baz Lurhmann needs to film the Great Gatsby” – Elisa Lam

Hotel employees had seen Elisa in the hotel lobby this afternoon. It is unclear to me if she was seen leaving or entering the lobby. She has also called her family in Vancouver this same afternoon and I cannot comment as to what the conversation was about or what the tone of Elisa was at the moment during the telephone conversation. I can only post the facts right now. Seemingly having a decent time during her stay in L.A. she ventured to a very “hip” bookstore called, “THE LAST BOOKSTORE”, and bought a couple vinyl records and a few books. This bookstore is known to have a huge selection of entertainment and at a very reasonable rate. Some books at the book store are only $1.00 so it suited her budget just fine. Katie Orphan who owns The Last Bookstore has said that Elisa was speaking loudly to customers and seemed like she would not leave them alone. I am not sure what was meant by this statement but that is up to interpretation by you, the reader. Katie had spoken to Elisa herself this day, which was supposedly Elisa’s last day that she was staying at The Cecil Hotel.

Elevator Security Video
February 13th, 2013, Los Angeles, California
An elevator surveillance tape is released to the media and public that shows the very last moments that Elisa is believed to be alive. The video itself is not of great quality and the time stamp is blurred out but it is said to be around the night of January 31st and morning of February 1st, 2013. The video shows her acting frantically and very disturbed and bothered by something and/or someone. There is much to guess about what exactly is going on in this video but the imagination runs wild when dealing with the unknown. I will expel my personal thoughts and speculations about this entire case towards the end of this article.

The nude corpse of Elisa Lam was found at 10:00am in a water holding tank for the hotel on top of the roof of The Cecil Hotel when a maintenance worker went to investigate complaints from guests about low water pressure and other various complaints involving the hotel’s water. Her clothing and watch were removed and found in the bottom of the tank according to the LAPD. The guests at the hotel had been complaining about something being wrong with the water and the water pressure for about two weeks. There exists a hinged lid on top of this water tank. The water tank itself is about 4 foot in diameter and about 15 feet off of the roof. A detective with the LAPD stated that in the tank that she was found in, there was about 10 feet of water. The tank had a ladder leading up to it for maintenance purposes. The doors going to the rooftop were locked and alarmed according to hotel staff. This means, she would have to have gone through two locked and alarmed doors to reach the rooftop. The only other way she could have made it to the roof was to knock out a grate/screen of a window and get onto the fire escape, but this seems likely to make loud noises while attempting it. As of this date, the police can only suspect other hotel residents and employees. The body was sent to the medical examiner for further analysis.

Authorities officially release a “do-not-drink” order for the water at The Cecil Hotel until further testing of the water supply can be completed. At this point in time many of the residents have consumed, bathed in, and used this water in their daily living. The chlorine content of the water was said to be high enough to keep it at safe drinking levels as far as toxins in the water are concerned.

After four long arduous months, the coroner’s report was finally released to the family of Elisa Lam. This is where the mystery really begins and all of the speculation has started. The coroner’s report states the death as an “accidental drowning” which was under “special circumstances”. The local police believe that Elisa was bipolar and depressed due to social media blog posts and that she might have been in an altered state of mind due to her own mental health. According to the LAPD, Elisa fell into the water tank and was not able to get out and drowned by accident. Believe it or not, these are the FACTS of this case. They suspect no foul play involved. No drugs, alcohol, or any substance was found during the autopsy. There were no clear signs of a struggle or anything out of the normal on her body. According to the record books, she simply fell into the tank and died. End of story. I do not believe so and at this point you are probably asking yourself how you feel about this case as well, right? Well, let me begin to explain a little further into the world of speculation, conspiracies, ghosts, and then my own personal thoughts.
