First Ladies:The Good and The Bad
Are You Proud of Our First Lady?
Perhaps it is the latest scandal with our present First Lady, may she reign not long nor prosper. However, it occurred to me that perhaps she is not the worst we have had in the White House.
Well, one cannot always be right.
I did find a few juicy tidbits but none to top short shorts in public at the Grand Canyon or touching the Queen herself or spending much needed money overseas for vacation but a few tidbits and I would like to share them with all of you.
First Lady as a title was actually given during the eulogy for Dolley Madison, although it has never been proven 100% as the eulogy was not put into print. Of all the first ladies, Dolley Madison may well have been the best loved. During the war of 1812, she put herself in harm’s way in order to save many icons from destruction while the White House was burning to the ground!
Dolley was a hard act to follow and it was said the next first lady Elizabeth Monroe was disliked and often ill during her term as first lady. There was not much else that was written about Lady Monroe but the next first lady must have had such a difficult time that nothing at all was said! She was the wife of John Adams and the first foreign-born first lady! Think of the bad press she must have had to live through!
As well loved, as Andrew Jackson was, his wife tops the cake! She was a bigamist for a short time! It’s true; she was not legally divorced from her first husband when she married Andy! Now that takes something, I am not sure what but something.
So see, spending tens of thousands on a vacation in Spain during your husband’s birthday, which they do not celebrate nor their own children’s but apparently he does as he got to play basketball with the big boys, is nothing compared to bigamy! Doesn’t that make you feel so much better about her little soiree? Think she will bring us back some Majorcan Cake?
Margaret Taylor, wife of President Zachary Taylor would not even attend the social fuctions at the white house and made no secret that she hated being first lady! Let us applaud her for her honesty!
First Lady Mary Lincoln was not popular and was said to be mentally unstable. War is enough to send the best of us crazy! Personally, I think we did her a disservice. She had a difficult job during the worst time of all up to today.
As upset as people were with the refurbishing that Jackie O made to the white house she was not the first, not even the second! Certainly not even the last to make changes to the White House! Besides who could find much fault with Jackie, she was the epitome of the First Lady we all want to be in our own lives.
Perhaps that is it. Perhaps that is what we all want. We want first ladies like Lady Roosevelt and Lady Barbara Bush and Lady Reagan and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who gave us projects and endeavors to be proud of and to strive to make work. They made us proud.
Our current first lady said two years ago she wanted to be an advocate for military wives and families. Nevertheless, what has she done for them? What will she do for our children as they return from Iraq and Afghanistan or as they return again and again into harm’s way? On the other hand, will she just keep taking vacations and spend their money on 30 rooms in a huge resort?
I realize this is inflammatory and derogatory and I realize there are many who will not agree with this at all but feel that something must be said about what our country is allowing to happen right under our own noses. What must be done as American’s is we must vote. The next election is in November. Think on this when that time arrives.
The First Lady should make us proud. Are we proud?

This is the first controversy the first lady has faced. As one observer put it,
