Flesh-Colored Band-Aids

Updated on January 11, 2019

Political and Social issues are ever with us. Gain perspective by reading what Rodric has to say about it. He may surprise you.

Ben Shapiro stated that there is no such thing as White Privilege. As a fan of this man, I tend to agree with the majority of his content. Shapiro is a dialogue strategist who uses his craft to logically bring the views of his opponents with ideological holes to the forefront of conversation that defy logical thinking.

When confronted with the idea of White privilege at an event with other speakers, Shapiro pointed out that privilege is a societal advantage given to some above others. As is his custom, Shapiro gave a valid example of what privilege is in society, called affirmative action. It is a privilege given to one group above another due to any reason. Blacks receiving special treatment because of past discrimination is privilege.

This article is about how both Shapiro and I, a proponent of the existence of White privilege (sort of), are correct all by the existence of the flesh-colored band-aid.

In the above picture, Kevin Garnette, an NBA player, has a bandage on his head after receiving an injury to the head. Most people would think nothing of it because that is what happens when a band-aid is placed on an injury. However, Garnette's bandage does not match the flesh on his body. Shapiro says it is economics, supply and demand. That is true. It is also a privilege. Not because White people have more money, which as a group they do, that they are privileged but because White people are the ones producing and consuming the most of those products.

Flesh colored does not take into account the idea that flesh comes in an array of colors from the richest browns to the snowy ivy hues expressed in the images below.

Until recent years, band-aids that reflect the color of people with darker skin were not widely available. Also, flesh-colored meant by default a hue that describes people who have a similar complexion to Europeans, which could be any group since all groups accept Caucasians come in an array of colors by accepted societal norms.

The fact that a flesh-colored band-aid existed to represent one color is the indication that White privilege exists in the form of the little things of society. It does not mean that White people can not be poor. The largest group of poor people in the nation are White! There are more Whites! What it does mean is the largest group of wealthy people are white, so by default society caters to that segment of society which will by default benefit the poor people of the general complexion of Whites.

Why should manufacturers care? It does not help their bottom line to do so. Public perception is why manufacturers care about the color of band-aids offered in Western society.

Whites are not given preference in the US on paper anymore. In fact, it would seem that Whites have a status of disadvantage.

Ben Shapiro

What is White Privilege Then?

Ben Shapiro is correct when he defines privilege as one group given preference above another and that Black people in the US have that status.

Whites are not given preference in the US on paper anymore. In fact, it would seem that Whites have a status of disadvantage.

Historically, Whites have been in political and economic power since the Europeans embarked on sea travel. European influence and power changed the world socio-economically and culturally. To compensate for this power the US of A, included affirmative action for people of color and women.

Ben Shapiro's point is correct. There is no privilege in that sense for Whites. Privilege comes in the form of flesh-colored band-aids and crayons, national chain barbershops, medical images of diseased skin and coloration descriptions of skin symptoms, skin care products. etc... Things that are normal in any given society is what sets the tone for privilege--only in Westen cultures, normal is White by default since White people conceived Western culture which dominates the world now.

White people make up less than one billion of the people on the planet, about 750 million; however, they can go anywhere in the world and have all needs taken care of because Western culture through colonization, science, and economics have made it so, also known as White privilege--better described as Cultural Preference for White people than White privilege--economic privilege.

White privilege, which I will change to Economic privilege exists in the minds of poor people who feel threatened by the way society caters to wealthy White people. Trickle down economics fits better describing what poor Whites gain from more White people being rich. This occurs in predominantly Black societies due to economic power also. Whites in South Africa and Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe, have all the economic power, so the Whites' needs in those societies were catered to above the Blacks who lived there.

Old South Africa's White Privilege

White Privilege in Some Form?

White privilege exists in the minds of many people, which makes it a real thing. No matter how people speak against it, even Ben Shapiro, logic makes no sense in the minds and feelings of millions of people who experience racism and chop it up to the privilege of Whites. All White people are rich and have good credit. White people make sure that Blacks cannot get ahead in society except for those few token minorities who are there to hide the fact that Whites are keeping the Black person down.

People believe that because at one point it was overwhelmingly true in America and other Western nations. There are pockets in society where it is still true that Whites have a privileged citizenship. That is true. But as far as a collective cultural phenom, it is a stretch to say that White people are more privileged than Blacks or any other race in treatment.

White privilege exists in the minds of many people, which makes it a real thing.

Ben is gifted at bringing a logical conclusion to the forefront of a conversation so that it can be viewed for what it is. Racism does exist. Economic privilege IS NOT racism.

The fact that flesh colored band-aids are not the color of my flesh alone is how oblivious American culture is to the fact of the Economic privilege of White people in Western culture. Blacks do not matter enough economically to change society from a European-based culture into Wakanda, a fictional version of what an African themed society could look like if the economic power existed. No privilege is found in the better treatment of Whites in general society, at least none that is provable as the White privilege of the pre-Civil Rights Era where signs of indication in many states advertised the privileged status of Whites.

White Privilege in Old USA

What I see is that Western culture is designed to support the majority population of Whites and economic excellence of those responsible for the prosperity of those who follow Western values. As other races become prominent in Western culture, their economic needs are entered into the pot for profit.

As minorities grow to demand band-aids in a variety of colors that all mean flesh-colored, privilege expands to inclusion. By demand, economic influence and product demand within the current context of society it can occur. Until that day, the privilege White people have in the US is the fact that they are greater in number, therefore a more viable market for catering to their cultures, which are many.

As much as it offends many to say, in America, White is normal. Since most nations on the planet with power and economic might are led by White people, no matter the population, White is normal. Wait, is saying that racist or a fact?

Shame all the White people for being White.

Brad, I would not say I am championing anything by writing about it. But if that is what it means to champion something, writing about it, then I do.

The other problems have not come to my attention to write about as of yet, and may never. I write about it because I am familiar with it to a degree. From your words, my subjective understanding of your tone is from a place of derision. I could be wrong.

By small and simple things do great things come about. If a band-aid brings awareness to others that society is creating a privilege for Whites, then why not point it out? It must be understood properly. If not, that is how misguided people get on the political scene claiming White privilege keeps them poor. That just isn't true. It has to be discussed to separate truth from fables.

Thanks for reading regardless of where you stand on the issue. It makes me happy to know that you took time out of your life to share something of mine.

Pamela, thanks for reading and writing a comment. I think that in order to focus on our humanity and character, minorities who scream White privilege must first get over FEELINGS. Feeling inferior because of there being a dominant culture is unhealthy. As a Black person, I understand our history in the US and the World with White people and the cultures that developed because of that history. In modern culture in Western societies, White is normal.

That is something that minorities must accept. Media are trying to make it seem that diversity is the norm, but it is not--especially in the US. There are more White people here. That is not racism. It just is.

It may take decades for Blacks to feel like they are being treated with the same respect of other races in America becaue the media is constantly reporting those who feel like White privilege is ruining their lives. It is psychologically crippling to think that way constantly.

Bill, as long as the thoughts that you have are not guilty, I feel honored to be part of your mental process. White guilt is ruining this country. It creates another class of disenfranchised people.

When I started writing this article, I wanted to open up a dialogue to change the perceptions of people's mind regarding White privilege. It is too ugly a concept now. White privilege is synonymous with White guilt in so many circles. It should not be so. White guilt creates racists where there would otherwise not be any.

I know you don't get into controversy like that anymore. It is irksome when I hear about people not getting something because of White privilege or getting rejected because of White privilege. I am not saying that it doesn't happen, but it cannot be as prevalent as what people are suggesting. That would mean that society is no better since the Civil Rights Movement. Evidence suggests that racial equality in opportunity is better. It is the best in the US. If only Americans could read about how things occur in other countries maybe we would appreciate where we are as a society.

Eric, thanks for sharing and reading the article. White privilege is not something that is necessarily negative to me. Being aware of how society caters to White people is not based in racism, but economics. All of Western society is designed to support European cultures and their off-shoots. That is not necessarily wrong. Being White is not wrong. It just is.

I do not believe you or anyone has to apologize for his or her race. I do believe that since you have a wife who is not White and a bi-racial son that you can identify with minorities more because you WILL experience some of what they go through because of the love of your family.

I do not like the connotation of White privilege. Society cannot change to make the cultural heritage of America to go away to make minorities feel more equal. That is psychological. That has to be taught in the home.

John, thanks so much for reading and adding your take. I am not a fan of privilege in the sense that it is being used by many regarding White people. My wife says there is definitely White privilege. I am not so sure about it because I have not ever experienced less privileged due to my racial status. I have FELT less privileged because of what other people have told me I should feel based on my African American status. I might write about that.

This may sound odd, but I like the way society is and I don't want there to be change to the extent that many proponents of change do. If I have the same access to services of the government and protection of the law, God will help with everything else I need to accomplish in life, and he has.

I could not imagine what an article about band-aids would say. This is indeed a subject you thought about a lot. It is thought-provoking, and I tend to agree with you also.

I wish we could reach a time where people just see other people for who they are, not as black or white, but just as another equal human being. After all we all bleed red!

It's a fascinating topic, Rodric, one you have obviously given a lot of thought to. Thanks for the insights. I tend to agree with the points you make. Now you've got me thinking, which is always a good thing. :)

Fantastic brother. I am a fan of cultural investigation with a twist of faith in God/Love. Down here I am a big old fat middle aged white guy. They call me Hoss or Boss. I think they label

me lower middle class in financial census stuff. (boy are they ignorant - quality of life determines class in my view) I know something here from back in my post graduate. A Black man and a good friend got a full ride scholarship for his "race". I only got a 1/2 for my self independence and "poverty. Do not concern there my other 1/2 was paid for by scholastic scholarship. Or nearly, I got loans in order to live as working was restricted. Books were only about 10 grand.

My Jewish, Hispanic and Asian friends were all behind Stacey, a member of my TA team.

Funny in a way all about that. Adding the races together us whites were the minority growing up. I think my hood is about 40% white.

      Privilege is a strange notion.

Your article is great in bringing us to the table to think of such things.

My wife says she is "yellow", she is Asian. My son says I am brown and that he is the perfect color. He does not see color, he sees hues of color. Just a description of light reflection.

We are heavy with Ethiopian and Sudanese "blacks" around here. We are quite populated by "black" Muslims. If you don't speak at least a little Spanish your job opportunities are more limited.

I think I have my most privilege by being 6ft, 200 lbs and gnarly looking.

But nobody nowhere and nohow can interrupt my privilege to Love.

      Again this was really great.

This is a very thought-provoking article, Rodrick. I never sat down and thought about things like flesh coloured band-aids being a sign of white privilege, but it certainly is. Enough people need to approach department stores, drug stores etc and write to the companies making these products to induce change. Yes, the privilege can swing the other way when compensation is made for" previous disadvantage" that then gives one group additional benefits the other cannot get.
