Gabrielle Giffords Steps Down
Gabrielle Giffords made news this week by announcing her resignation from Congress via a YouTube video. For those of you who do not know who Giffords is, she is a Democrat from Arizona who holds a seat in the House of Representatives. On January 8, 2011, she was part of an assassination attempt while making a public appearance for her constituents. Giffords was shot in the head, and six others were killed.
A year after the event, Giffords has made it official that she is stepping down from her congressional seat. Her announcement has come with mixed reactions. While her term is up this year, many were hoping she would at least serve it out the rest of the way. Others were hoping she would run for reelection to keep her position for another term. However, there are others who are happy to see her step down from her position.
Personally, I believe it was the right decision for Giffords to resign her seat in the House of Representatives. Her main concern right now should not be politics. She has suffered a traumatic and life altering incident. Regaining her health should be her main focus. It has been hard enough for her to even make it to Washington D.C. the few times she has since her injury. It would be nearly impossible for her to run a reelection campaign because of how taxing it would be on her health. I believe her main priority as of now should be her health and not politics.
Besides her health, resigning is the best decision for the people she represents. For the past year, they really have had no representation because she has not been able to attend congressional meetings. It may seem harsh to say, but she should have stepped down a while ago. Her duty as an elected official is to represent the people of her district in Arizona. She has been unable to do that for the past year.
I have no doubt in my mind that Giffords could have run for reelection and won. However, those votes would not have come because of people believing she was truly the best candidate to represent their district. I am not trying to bash Giffords at all. I am simply saying that the people of Arizona deserve to have their voices heard by a representative who can do just that – represent. Since she was no longer able to fulfill her duties, she made the right decision to step down, and I am happy that she could make that decision.
I have nothing against Gabby Giffords. I feel sorry for her just like I do for any other politician who is the victim of an assassination attempt. It is something no one, or their family, deserves to go through. She has already made incredible strides up to this point, and I wish her nothing but the best on her road to recovery. I hope that someday she will be back to normal health and be able to resume her career as a politician. In the future, it would be tremendous for her to have an opportunity to run for reelection, but for now, it is best that her political life be put on hold.
