Gang Warfare In America

Updated on March 14, 2012

How far away is your nearest gang?

They aren't just dumb kids and royal lords!

Gangs are a culture within the American culture, and they even have their own subcultures.

What do you know about gangs in America? How have they affected your life, your family's lives?

Is law enforcement on top of America's gang populations?

How bad a problem are they, and is the gang problem getting worse or better?

You could spend a lot of any weekend educating yourself about gangs in the United States, so I will just touch some highlights and provide some links below to get you started. If you don't concern yourself about gangs, you may not be prepared when they reach your neighborhood and your door (presuming they haven't already!)

Gangs in America may well be as old as America itself. There is always a criminal element in any society, and any group of criminals who work together to achieve a common purpose qualifies to be called "a gang."

Television and the movies have popularized (for lack of a better word) the Mafia, alcohol, drugs, and the big money and glitz of criminal activity.

Unemployment, lowered (and lowering) life expectations, and pervasive fear and violence in far too many American communities, have combined to see gangs at all levels of sophistication growing in numbers and sophistication. And, they represent more than a problem of simple criminal activity.

Gangs connected to international criminals beyond America's borders are a threat to our national security, giving international criminals support and smuggling routes for illegal immigrants, drugs, prostitution, weapons, and contacts ranging from our prison systems to penetration of our military, police, transportation, and other security services.

Who are these criminal elements within our country, and how great a threat do they pose to "domestic tranquility" and the survival of America as we know it today?

If you are reading this article, the chances are good that you are reading it on a computer, so I urge you to click on the link below and read the FBI report you have paid for, and the information it contains. It has been paid for with the courage and even the blood of those who continue to investigate and oppose the spread of such criminal elements within our society.

Perspycacious, Just wanted to leave a comment on gangs accordingly. I came from the streets of small town america. The reality of gangs is that the public should worry about the street gangs more than the larger factions( the mafia, russians and the sort). The people that have spread all over the united states are the smaller street people that bring drugs and crime and death. they are backed by the cartels who have unlimited amounts of money and use intimidation and murder as the enforcing power. if you think that you or your children are safe you are living in a dream world. try going downtown at night or going into a poor nieghborhood of your own town and see what the life of poverty does to the people who reside there. When a person has nothing to lose because they have already lost it and have no future they turn desperate. A desperate person will do what they have to do to survive and if it comes down to you or them, well you can guess what will happen. Any one who does not believe that this can't happen in your town or city, you had better open your eyes because it already is happening. when street people band together they control certain sections of towns and cities, if you don't believe this ask a local policeman. they are the people who face them everyday, they are the one's who really know.

Points all well taken, but let's concern ourselves about ALL of them. This is indeed the struggle between Good and Evil. We all have a part in this struggle...unless anyone is ready to surrender now, and I know you are not. Me neither.

Perspycacious, What an informative, practical, timely summary of the impact of gangs on life in these United States! It always is disappointing to read about the destruction of dreams, life and property. It's most considerate of you to write such an important, timely article in such a clear, compelling, logical way which is so compact, factual and reader-friendly.

Thank you for sharing, voted up + all.

      Respectfully, Derdriu

Derdriu: I have added two links to this Hub recently which make the pervasiveness, violence, and significance of Gang Warfare in America even clearer.

I have been in a supermarket while it was being robbed, and at a bank as it was being robbed. The first was a gang effort, the bank robber was a loner. If you haven't been affected by a gang or a gang member, the likelihood that you will be is growing. Supporting law enforcement in this area of public safety is something we should all be doing. In so many cases the gangs are terrorists, for fear is their weapon of choice and murder too easily chosen. Being informed is better than thinking it will pass you by.

Another Election 2012 topic will have to be law enforcement. Our law enforcers have had a lot of new responsibilities added, with less than the needed attention and support. Penetrating gangs is difficult, dangerous, and time consuming. The gangs have an easier time penetrating the police and the military, and in some cases nearly control some prisons. The nearest "line of defense" needs some strengthening. Thanks for reading enough to clearly understand a major problem law enforcement faces.

While many Americans are celebrating Easter with friends and family, a too large percentage of Americans are eating their Easter dinners in prison and juvenile detention because of wrong choices (sometimes because no other choices seemed to make any sense for them.) Why should the rest of us care about gangs and gang warfare in America? Because it's closer and more of a threat to more and more of us, and because ignorance is not bliss.

So true Demas, I have been in situations like you speak of and even saved a life or two. I have been threatened on main street by the drug seller, and made it clear to him I was not impressed by his mouth. It is a huge problem all over this country and the world.

The facts are there for anyone with two eyes or sensitive fingers, and a brain to "see". Or other precious resource is our youth. Gangs are co-opting many of them using fear, money, and sex tactics when they feel that society offers them so little. (I responded to your other most recent comment with a story about random stabbings in broad daylight in a Utah supermarket parking lot.)

I'll be honest, the only gang I've had problems with is the government sponsored one's. The military police in LA Ca. are more dangerous than the gangs and criminals together. Botched SWAT raids, beating to death of mentally challenged homeless people, shooting unarmed people every day, and getting away with it. Lying in court, planting evidence, falsifying reports. The Rampart scandal continues, nothing changed. The worst part is, not being safe in your own house, from the police, even if you do nothing illegal.
