You could spend a lot of any weekend educating yourself about gangs in the United States, so I will just touch some highlights and provide some links below to get you started. If you don't concern yourself about gangs, you may not be prepared when they reach your neighborhood and your door (presuming they haven't already!)
Gangs in America may well be as old as America itself. There is always a criminal element in any society, and any group of criminals who work together to achieve a common purpose qualifies to be called "a gang."
Television and the movies have popularized (for lack of a better word) the Mafia, alcohol, drugs, and the big money and glitz of criminal activity.
Unemployment, lowered (and lowering) life expectations, and pervasive fear and violence in far too many American communities, have combined to see gangs at all levels of sophistication growing in numbers and sophistication. And, they represent more than a problem of simple criminal activity.
Gangs connected to international criminals beyond America's borders are a threat to our national security, giving international criminals support and smuggling routes for illegal immigrants, drugs, prostitution, weapons, and contacts ranging from our prison systems to penetration of our military, police, transportation, and other security services.
Who are these criminal elements within our country, and how great a threat do they pose to "domestic tranquility" and the survival of America as we know it today?
