George Zimmerman: Let the Race Thing Rest and Look at the Forensics

Updated on September 3, 2012

What Happened?

As an African American, I am totally frustrated about the racial tension that has dominated this case. Focus on race has caused racists to crawl out of the woodwork and say horrible things about Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman, and their families. The racial comments take us there: politics, conservatives, liberals, Democratic, Republicans, Obama, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Can we look at the stream of information that is coming out and process it in a rational way?

Trayvon Martin, from all accounts, appears to be a regular high school kid. He dressed like other teenagers and probably sagged, like other teenagers. Trayvon smoked marijuana. Many, many teenagers, and preteens, smoke marijuana and the trend increases over the years. They come into the classroom “high.” Does he deserve to be mocked, ridiculed, and made to look like a horrible person? Contrary to racists’ belief that his family was on welfare, Trayvon’s mother is employed by the County where she resides. Tracy Martin, his father, is also employed.

George Zimmerman, based on the FBI’s findings, is not racist. He has black friends and mentors two black boys. It appears that he is very needy and wanted to “save the neighborhood.” Though many don’t want to admit it, his observation of Trayvon was based on a profile. According to George, there had been many burglaries by black people. The FBI report referenced a local gang called The Goons that wear hoodies. George Zimmerman had not seen Trayvon in the neighborhood before. Rather than continue to Target, George tracked Trayvon Martin.

Based on storylines in my favorite television shows, I believe police investigators have the sophisticated technology and mental acuity necessary to bring the truth to light. I believe DNA, timelines, forensic reports, witness accounts, George Zimmerman’s many statements, and other relevant information will be used to resolve this case. Major media are reporting information as the findings evolve. Many people don’t want to accept any information that doesn’t support their biased positions.

This is a tragedy all around. I hope excellent investigations will reveal what really happened on February 26 that caused the death of 17-year old Trayvon Martin.

Good article. I hadn't heard that George Zimmerman mentored youths. I have read that his dad is a retired judge or magistrate, which seems the most logical explanation to me of why he wasn't arrested the night of the tragic incident.

I'm following the case closely, reading police reports, all reputable media, etc. I try to comment on articles but people get so vicious.

Perhaps the reason why people get so vicious is the absolute shoddy job the media did on this story, and they way they tried to lynch Zimmerman through bogus editing and reporting. When naive people think the media is telling them the truth but it is really a lie, then we have the situation where no one really can know what is going on and they react blindly and in anger.

Hi Jack! How do we know what is bogus? I agree that the truth should be told.

Used to be we didn't, and had to take the media at their word. Now, with incidents such as the false, misleading and libelous editing of Zimmerman example from NBC the 'net allows us to find out the truth. There's a reason why the news media is at their lowest trust rating ever with the public.

BTW, this travesty of news aired multiple times over several stations, including at the network level. Not just an isolated incident that was a mistake.

Hopefully the action taken by the network is a strong warning for others who might try that. Who can afford to lose their jobs these days?

I didn't recognize the name. I just looked her up. I don't know what she said but all media people seem to have their own slant. When they report the facts, the intonation in their voices is like editorial commentation.

when we allow the FBI and the media to define racism we can become very confused. "Some of my best friends are Black." is such a cliche that I don't know why any White person would bother to use it as a defense. It's not. Since we are being so reasonable today, let's look at the facts.

      1. Neighborhood watch participants are to watch their neighborhoods. They are not to confront suspects but merely to summon authorities.

      2. Authorities told Zimmerman specifically NOT to follow Martin. A direct order which Zimmerman chose to ignore.

      3. Zimmerman got out of his car with his gun to confront Martin. Even if Martin had licked his tongue at Zimmerman and talked about his mama, Zimmerman's life was not in danger.

      4. A grown armed White man shoots an unarmed Black teenager. Their race is one of the facts. If race were not important, why did the dispatcher ask about it? To take this situation out of the historical context of race in this country is to ignore reality.

What could there have possibly been about this teenage boy that made this grown man feel so threatened that he shot him? Let's say it was lack of education. The white man has been trained to fear the Black man generation after generation for centuries. This is racism. Racism is not the caricature of the angry hate-filled, card-ccarrying Klansman. Racism is a systematic trans-generational status quo that keeps Whites on top and everyone else on the bottom.

The revelation of NBC's attempt to cast the situation as racial doesn't change the fact that it was already racial to begin with. If someone puts a knife to my throat, I do not protect myself by closing my eyes. Closing my eyes might make me feel better because I won't have to see the blood. I won't have to look at the ugly cut and if I squeeze my eyes tightly enough, I may not even feel the pain. There's a kind of hopelessness in closing our eyes. When we feel the knife bearer is too powerful and there's nothing we can do, why not at least spare ourselves the trauma and die in the sweet bliss of ignorance?

Thank you for reading and your comments Rhonda. We have pretty lively discussions on Huffington Post about this. You might even want to write an article for HP. I love your writing!
