Global Warming 18--Christian Right Split on Warming

Updated on March 3, 2007

Evangelicals Split on Global Warming

James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Paul Weyrich of American Values, Gary Bauer of Coalitions for America, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and representatives of several other conservative Christian groups have sent a letter criticizing the Rev. Richard Cizik, director of government affairs of the National Association of Evangelicals for "diverting the evangelical movement from more important issues like abortion and homosexuality" by his support for global warming and human rights issues.

According to the NY Times article by Laurie Goodstein linked below, "Evangelicals have recently become a significant voice in the chorus on global warming. Last year more than 100 prominent pastors, theologians and college presidents signed an 'Evangelical Climate Initiative' calling for action on the issue."

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said "We're saying what is being done here is a concerted effort to shift the focus of evangelical Christianity to these issues that draw warm and fuzzies from liberal crusaders."
