Gun Running Gone Haywire
Congress Gets Stonewalled
The man pictured at the right was US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and he lost his life in the defense of our southern border. His death resulted from the actions of the ATF. Yes, the ATF. They set up a sting called "Operation Gun Runner" which was flying under the radar until the whistle was blown on the operation. Another agent named Zapata was gunned down - unarmed - on February 15th. The guns that were used were traced back to Operation Gunner.
Gun Walking 101 Video. Kinda long but the nuts and bolts.
When gun shop owners along the border noticed unusual gun purchase activity they naturally notified the ATF. You know little things like buying 575 AK47s. Gives new meaning to the term of being a "gun enthusiast." The response they received from ATF was rather odd. They told them to take a chill pill, they had things under control. They were encouraging gun shop owners to allow the purchases. Their definition of under control seems to be that once the purchases were being made on video tape, ATF personnel would track the purchasers right back to the border and then let them waltz on across the border with purchases in hand. Does that sound like a little bit more than insane to you?
The only way any of this saw the light of day was when the ATF had the whistle blown on them seemingly by their own agents. Many of the agents thought it was nuts and that people were going to get killed. They were right. Between the time of the onset of the operation until the outting of it, it appears that over 2,500 assault rifles, pistols and .50 caliber sniper rifles were supplied, courtesy of the ATF, to the drug lords in Mexico. For those not familiar with 50 cals, when they hit you you are very aware of it - for just a second or two. What I have to firmly believe, doing my own research, is that if the whistle hadn't been blown this operation would still be in progress - operating under the radar. Why? The whole thing makes no sense to me.
Here's what Janet Napolitano had to say to Senator Grassley. It seems that she is, once again, the typical Washington mushroom. You know living in a dark room and being fed, or maybe feeding, horse hockey.
I know nothing, I see nothing BUT I smell something
Now one needs to maybe understand that the BATFE is under the auspices of the Justice Department, Eric Holder being the boss man, and not the Department of Homeland Security. However, shouldn't these two agencies be talking to each other and making each other aware of what these kinds of operations in progress are doing, or not doing? Don't hold your breath as long as Eric Holder remains as the Attorney General of this nation. Napolitano seems to have a terminal case of brain freeze so I have to pass on this myself. The point is they should have had cross-departmental communication on this type of operation since there is a natural bleed over
The ATF knew about the presence of these known gun smugglers, not only in the Phoenix area but all across northern Texas and in cities all across this nation. They were, and still are, walking among us as free as a bird. Why? This poses no threat to the security of this nation? Tell us why is you answer that one with a "no." So as you can see from the Grassley video, he got nowhere. He also got nowhere with other select members of ATF that the committee had before them. They want to try to hide behind the Justice Department's cloak of "we're conducting an on-going investigation" tap dance. Well, so is Congress Holder.
An "ongoing investigation" by Holder to me means "we're busy here covering this up and wiping the tracks out of the sand so you won't know which way we went." That was in the Senate. So now the House has swung into action. The stonewalling has continued by the Justice Department and the ATF, in particular, continues. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is conducting its own investigation. Darrell Issa, R-CA is the chairman of that committee and he is now threatening to hold the acting director, Kenneth Melson, of ATF fame in contempt? Why, you ask?
A subpoena for documents was issued on March 31st of this year. No documents have been produced. You also need to be aware that Melson is a known advocate of dismembering the Second Amendment. The controversy swirling around Melson is the reason he has "acting" before "Director." He had until April 13th to fork over the goods which seems like more than enough time to this frog. The Justice Department is falling back on the "open investigation" song and dance routine. How long does it take to find out that something isn't right in Omaha Holder?
Here's what Issa had to say about that assertion, "The Department's assertion internal policy to withhold with what it labels pending criminal investigations may not deprive Congress from obtaining those same documents if they are pertinent to an ongoing congressional investigation - particularly in a matter involving allegations that reckless and inappropriate decisions by top Justice Department officials may have contributed to the deaths of U.S. and Mexican citizens." I would have not used "may have" and inserted "did." But I'm not as nice as he is.
Do you smell something funny here? By not producing said documents does it maybe not give off the stench that a cover up may well be in progress? Or maybe if they think they stall long enough that this will all just go away? Senator Grassley subpoenaed the documents back in January as head of the Judiciary Committee and hasn't seen diddly squat since then either. Congress has the right to conduct its own "ongoing investigation" as Holder conducts his own "ongoing investigation." We know Holder holds Congress in contempt. He has let that previously be known. Maybe it's time that Congress holds him, and the other big fish, in contempt. Holder is dirty, has been dirty (remember Marc Rich?) and always will be dirty.
They allowed thousands of guns to cross the border knowingly and guess what? Those guns are now in the hands of the drug cartels running rampant across our southern border. It might not be the best time for a vacation to Mexico. You know that. But what we don't know is who authorized this operation where guns were openly allowed to walk across our border and be placed in the hands of some very bad, criminal types. What say you?
