Plea to the Media - Letter to The Orlando Sentinel - One Central Florida Resident Attempting to Make a Difference
My Reach to the Local Media
This hub has no fluff, no sidebars, no 'buy here now' additions. This is my attempt at sending our plea to my local newspaper. I wrote a letter and attached it to an email to a Sunday columnist named Beth Kassab. She's one of my favorite columnists, covering everything from how to de-clutter your home to reaching out to charities. I felt she was a good place to start as the Orlando Sentinel seems to give her carte blanche regarding the topics she chooses to print. First I will send you a copy of the email text I sent, then follow it with my letter. I sure hope to hear from her! I'll keep you posted for sure.
My email text
Please read the attached letter. I am a freelance writer living in Longwood and am part of a movement called H.O.W. (Humanity One World). Although I write for gain (very little at the moment!), I am a member of HubPages, which is my favorite online writing site because I can write from the heart and not worry about keyword density and repetition. This plea comes from the heart and I hope you take it seriously. We are a group of writers who are trying to change the current state of the world's treatment of humanity (or lack thereof!) one person at a time. If we can bring morals back to society perhaps we can end the societal illnesses spreading throughout the world like cancer. Please help.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!

And now for my letter

Dear Ms. Kassab:
I have been following your column since you first began writing for the Sentinel. You offer a variety of subjects, all of which pertain to real life people. You always have something positive to offer which is why I follow you; there’s just too much ugliness reported in the news these days.
As you see, I am a freelance writer. I am an active writer on HubPages.com, which is a collective site of wonderful writers. It’s more a community of writers than it is a money maker, for sure, but the community is wonderful. We are a tight bunch who has developed friendships with writers from literally all over the world.
Many of us on HubPages have joined with a favorite ‘hubber’, Bill Holland who goes by the name of Billybuc. He has begun a movement called H.O.W., which stands for Humanity One World. We now have quite a following and are asking all who have committed to the movement to spread the word outside the HP writing community. Please follow the link to the origination of this movement. http://billybuc.hubpages.com/hub/Social-Issues-How-Do-We-Cure-Social-Ills-HOW
Many of us have joined and posted articles for the cause. My latest contribution was actually inspired by a feature in the Parade magazine in the beginning of December about a little boy named Joshua Williams who has been feeding the poor since he was 5. Amazing little boy!
We now have a page on Facebook dedicated to H.O.W. Here’s the link: http://www.facebook.com/groups/294777667307474/. One of our other members has also created a website and logo for H.O.W.: http://helpnowplease.wix.com/howonline#. Our goal is to invite the media to help spread the word and the philosophy behind H.O.W. If each person does his or her part to show random acts of kindness, we can change the current state of the world one person at a time. We hope to create the ripple effect and get the task of healing our world in motion.
I know I seem to be inundating you with links, but I have one more to offer. Our founder, Bill Holland has issued a 365/365 challenge for 2013. The challenge is simple: perform a random act of kindness at least once a day every day of the coming year. This can be as simple as smiling at a stranger as you pass him on the sidewalk or helping an elderly person load their groceries in their car or opening a door for a stranger. Kindness is not limited to monetary contributions; charity comes in all forms. Please check out this link: http://billybuc.hubpages.com/hub/HOW-To-Make-A-Difference-The-365365-Challenge for more information and the heart behind the challenge.
Ms. Kassab, as I said we have followers (members) from all over the world: Australia, South Africa, the UK, India, China, the Philippines - we are literally a global community. If each of us can enlist the help of our local media just imagine the ripple effect we can create!
Your post in this Sunday’s paper regarding the Orlando Sentinel Family Fund Holiday Campaign is why I am addressing this letter to you. I feel you will take our plea to heart and spread the message of goodwill. We can change the world – one person at a time.
I look forward to hearing from you.
