Happy New Years! The Government Celebrates with Complete Disregard for The Constitution
On December 31 2011, Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act. This is a common tactic by the US Government; Signing unpopular bills into effect during the holidays so that the American public don't hear that much about it. That's why the super-committee's deadline was thanksgiving week. So whenever a holiday comes around, keep you eyes open for government action which might not be so popular.
The National Defense Authorization Act
This legislation allows the military to hold Americans indefinitely on American soil if they at suspected terrorists. Essentially, the government will have the ability to jail people as if they are guilty, and until they are are proven innocent, and technically even if they are. This is in direct violation of the 5th amendment, which requires the government to issued writs of Habeas Corpus. This is a right guaranteed by the constitution which the government has just mad conditional: If you aren't suspected of being a terrorist, then the 5th amendment protects your rights. Obama signed this into law, but said that he didn't want to. So either he said that to cover his own ass, or he was held at gun point by John Boehner until he signed it into law. This is another occurrence of Obama's disregard for the Constitution, as he is supposed to use his veto power to end this type of illegal legislation.
