High values and morals: the key to success?

Updated on July 14, 2012

Part 1

You know that they say that if you want to have success in life, you have to put enthusiasm, effort, and work hard. When you were a child you probably heard from most of your family that to have the doors to success opened, you have to study and focus on your talents, and that sometimes you have to sacrifice things to achieve that goal. You probably heard that you also have to keep humble and think about the others and not being selfish. This is basically what most of us ‘good people’ do, but then later we find out that the world is not as easy as we thought it would be and that doing this is not a guarantee of having a successful life at all.

The world of adults is not as we projected when we were children

Sadly, although many people achieve success by means of what is stated in the first paragraph in this hub, the ugly truth is that it is not always that way. It happens that some people who grow up being everything but humble and hard-working find success in life by means of doing things that are not ethical, legal or moral. Yes, it is that way, although we may want to think that such person always faces personal problems that don’t let them be happy. You know there are people in prestigious companies that do not get there because of their merits or their hard work, but because of their friendship or relationship to family who also work there. They can be as arrogant and selfish as they can be, yet if they are good in the aspect that they work on, they get to be successful and reach high levels such as becoming a CEO or a president.

It also happens that there are people who can be considered “perfect” in terms of their resume and also because they are trustable, reliably and ethical, yet do not seem to get to their expectations. Today it is almost a lottery to find a job- any kind of job. You surely think “I am 4.0 GPA, I am reliable, I have never had any problem in life other than what’s usual, never been arrested, never cheated to the point of being suspended or expelled, studied as heck, overnight, sacrificed many social activities”… yet you may be years to be able to find a job. What happened to what the person did during all his life in order to be successful? Why does that idiot who used to be a bully in school, cheated in college, lied to his parents and even was unfaithful to his girlfriend is getting the job and I am here depending on others and bankrupt? You see, today, success in life is not totally dependent on your personal or even professional or academic background.

The world of adults is shaped mostly by people who know how to be clever. Yes, they kind of lie to our children. It’s certainly not that children and young people don’t need to keep high standards in life to be able to succeed, but that in order to succeed today, mostly because the world is overpopulated, luck plays a grand role in the basis to succeed in life. What do people do to help get a bit lucky?

Survival of the fittest

Let’s face it- today’s world is shaped to be lived healthily only for the people with sanguine and choleric personalities- people who are extrovert. The world is a very hostile and harsh place for those who strive to keep high morals. Even that can be noticed from early childhood. Children who always keep quiet and seem to be different get to be bullied much more than those who can’t stop talking and behaving the wrong way. This does not change too much as life progresses. Even in the workplace there are different forms of harassment for those who basically want to be in peace and work the right way. A lot of supervisors and bosses expect employees to do things that can harm their reputation for the sake of making more and more money. You know how many companies, from small to large ones, get into legal trouble from some sort of fraud and corruption. It even happens in the government.

What basically happens is that because luck plays a role to be successful today, many people try to get some help to have good luck, and not necessarily from a good standpoint. Competition has become so fierce than some people know that they can’t afford to keep doing the right thing all the time of production will be slow and they will lose money, because other companies who do the same will certainly know how to do things the wrong way such that people and the law don’t notice and get successful. We have let our world go into a point in which keeping high values and a high level of ethics costs money, so you got to risk your reputation to be able to succeed, in a lot of types of work today. Being granted permits, doing a thorough investigation of a case, taking the time to do a work the best and most reliable way today is expensive. Some people will tell you that what they expect is the most reliable and fast people to do the work. Do you know how many people actually can do a good and quick job in this world? It certainly is not the majority. Remember, companies will only sell their positive, and will keep their negative in their closet. But know this: lots of people today are not successful for their exceptional work, but because of their cleverness to the job. Unfortunately, things in the economy are not getting any better and what we are leaving our children is somehow, frightening.

I will talk more about that issue in the second part, as this first part mostly dealt with the workplace but certainly it also happens in the sentimental life.

Totally feel you and understandable. I tried to have some high morals considering how I deal with woman and they make me cave in a bit sometimes.
