House Where Nobody Lives

Updated on October 17, 2010

Abandoned

There's a house on my block that's abandoned and cold
The folks moved out of it a long time ago
And they took all their things and they never came back
It looks like it's haunted with the windows all cracked
Everyone calls it the house
The house where nobody lives

Once it held laughter, once it held dreams
Did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

Well, the paint is all cracked, it was peeled off of the wood
The papers were stacked on the porch where I stood
And the weeds had grown up just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney and an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever come back
To the house where nobody lives

Oh, and once it held laughter, once it held dreams
Did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

So if you find someone, someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver, oh don't trade it for gold
Cause I have all of life's treasures and they're fine and they're good
They remind me that houses are just made of wood
What makes a house grand, oh it ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure
But without love it ain't nothin' but a house
A house where nobody lives
But without love it ain't nothin' but a house
A house where nobody lives

That's crazy Lisa, they stole mine too a few years back. That's terrible to loose your husband and your place to live. That's what pisses me off, they get by with anything they want and the jails are full poor folks. You're doing better now though, right? I need to get over to visit more of you hubs. Oh yeah, I hear we're on the campaign trail :-P

Yeah, evil banksters literally stole my house from me after my husband died almost 5 years ago. I was even making the payments and they took it. I couldn't even get a hold of them. But then, my financial advisers ripped me off for thousands in my state of grief too, along with everyone else.

Right on Lisa, they seem to be everywhere now thanks to the evil banksters. Thanks for taking time to check out the hub! Peace!!

This was very good. Houses always fascinate me because they seems to exude a particular personality. This is probably due to the people who lived in them. When I see abandoned houses such as the one on your hub, I often wonder of the history behind it. I wonder if love and laughter filled it or pain and heartache. I think this house is beautiful and it needs for someone to fill it.

with people too we ahev to ensure that we keep them well maintaned lest they develope cracks like the house did. We need to work on them as much as the house.the house you so beautifully mention could be a metaphor for cracked relationships too.

      lovely one.

Hello Tom,Lovely words ,unhappy part is it is awakening one to the things about to be! This down spiral which will cause thousands to lose their homes soon! Good part is the way it evokes nostalgia in your readers which makes excellent reading so thanks, jandee

What a stunning poem! A very deep and meaningful message in there. The lines I liked besst, though it was hard to choose, are: "What makes a house grand, oh it ain't the roof or the doors / If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure / But without love it ain't nothin' but a house / A house where nobody lives." I would buy a CD just to have those words in a song!

      Love and peace

      Tony

Artistic integrity, honesty, or anything that doesn't glorify outright vapid materialism is frowned upon in our Brave New World. . . .but I'm opinionated like that.

Yeah, this is one of those tunes that got no play anywhere so I would guess not a lot of folks know it. I think it's from about 2001 or 2002 and I think the disc was Alice.

Damn, I know about him. . . .but I didn't know that, didn't catch it. Often I do catch these types of things. I'm positive that one of my uncles would have caught it right off the bat.

Wow,thanks for taking me home for a few minutes. I have had one moment after another for the last three months of returning "home."

My favorite line, "So if you find someone, someone to have, someone to hold

Don't trade it for silver, oh don't trade it for gold."

Your poem speaks deeply to my soul. At sixty five, my journey has taken me hither and yon to all sorts of places and recently I have found a home in my soul and I have also found someone to have and to hold. So home for me is definitely not the physical structure, which will eventually crumble, perhaps but it is what the physical structure represents.

Maybe some day, I will have another physical structure that I will call home, but for now, I am home when I can go inside and celebrate me home, and when I can look at the most gorgeous woman in the world and hold her. That is home for me right now. And I like that song, "Celebrate Me Home."

Thanks for this AWESOME poem. what is happening to all of us here? More and more poems. It cracks me up. In a profound way.

      Peace, Tom

      Vern
