How Sustainable Are You
HOW SUSTAINABLE ARE YOU?
Sustainability is the buzzword these days. Everybody is talking about sustainability right from the United Nations to the common man. But a very fundamental question that needs to be addressed is ARE WE REALLY SUSTAINABLE?
The concept essentially means the practices that are environmentally sound, economically viable and socially just, by definition. Every day the newsmakers stress upon these three pillars of sustainability when talking big about development and environmental conservation. But there is more to it than policies, protocols and treaties. It is our attitude and way of carrying out our routine activities that actually contribute to the cause, positively or negatively.
Mundane activities like brushing our teeth, bathing, cooking, car washing, commuting to the workplace, workstation habits, cooking styles, eating habits as well as household chores, all have a sustainability angle to them. There are ways to execute all these activities that result in conservation of electricity, water as well fuel, provision of resources to more people, and money saving, that in turn add positively towards making our daily life much more sustainable. All these measures if followed by every individual on a daily basis could serve to obviate the need for various treaties and the propaganda the world over for sustainability.
I will not re-iterate the energy saving measures that are being propagated so religiously everywhere. Instead, I would ask all of you friends, how many of them do you follow; in other words, how sustainable are you?
