How You or Your Group Can Be Labeled Terrorist

Updated on February 19, 2017
Source

The reason for this article is to highlight the understanding of terrorist and what it means in the United States was interesting and a little disturbing, along with quite hidden.

My desire to share this is not to say no one knew this already, particularly you HubPages writers. But, it is the fact that a lot of people do not know this.

The Definition

According to the U.S. State Department in the 1980s, the term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against non-combatant targets by subnational (in a nation as an organized or independent) groups, or clandestine (secret) agents.

The term “terrorist group” means any group practicing, or which has significant sub-groups, which practice international terrorism.

These are the best definitions in my opinion also.

The Status: NONCOMBATANT

Above you read the word noncombatant. Victims are noncombatant, which means ordinary citizens that are not affiliated with the terrorist group are considered noncombatants. Therefore, the terrorist group is obviously filled with combatants.

The U.S. State Department has no definition for the term “noncombatant,” they essentially left this up to the military.

Take a look using the link. On the PDF on page 9, in the bottom paragraph, one can read this very thing.

If they left this definition up to the military, then this means we should observe what it means to be a combatant according to the military.

The COMBATANT

According to Merriam-Webster, the combatant is a person who is engaged in or is ready to engage in combat.

A noncombatant person would be the opposite of this, namely a civilian. A combatant is the same as a soldier. And soldiers fight for a country, or body, and nation.

Therefore, these characteristics of combatants (soldiers) apply to the persons committing terrorist acts.

Combatant/Soldier Characteristics

  • Soldiers wear certain colors, certain outfits, and emblems or symbols.
  • Soldiers have allegiance (loyalty, obedience, devotion) to a flag, symbol or emblem.
  • Soldiers carry a weapon
  • Soldiers that are off-duty are not carrying a weapon.
  • Soldiers that are on-duty are carrying a weapon.
  • Soldiers engage in combat with a weapon.

The same discrepancy applies for on an off or on-duty person that is a combatant under another military group or some other body.

If a person who is a part of a terrorist group is considered as a combatant, a soldier by definition of a soldier, then if they have in their possession a weapon, whatever it may be, and it injures, harms, or kills somebody, then they are engaging in war.

Returning to the definition, terrorism consists of acts committed on noncombatant targets. This is based on the behavior and characteristics of a soldier in the military.

Therefore, if one has all the listed characteristics of a soldier, and the characteristics stated in the definition, then they are classified as a potential terrorist or group of terrorists.

In A Nutshell - Who Can Be Classified As Terrorists or Terrorist Groups

  • Racist Groups with either a flag, symbol, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Racist Organizations with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Secluded Organizations with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Religious Groups flag with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Environmental Groups with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Political Groups with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Anarchy Groups with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Factions of Strangers With the Same Cause or Ideals with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • A Gang with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • A MAFIA with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Angry Housewives with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Angry Postal Workers with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Angry Atheists with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians
  • Perturbed Animal Rights Groups with either a flag, symbol, name, or motto, or all of these, with a particular outfit or not, and weapons or anything that assaults people or civilians

If you are a part or a group or solo, and you represent or have loyalty towards an idea, and you decide to take it upon yourself to assault someone with a normal or forged weapon, then the person is a TERRORIST.

After the Assault By the Person or Persons Deemed a Terrorist

After a member of the group, or the group, assaults a person (noncombatant or civilian) and they get seriously injured, hurt, or killed, comes the most interesting portion of this.

The government or state responds with whatever domestic specialized force they have to engage in war or strike back with full force on this body or group and all that inhabit or are a part of it. The suspected terrorist groups will be utterly destroyed or killed.

This is because the terrorist group is considered armed combatants that engaged in war upon a neighbor civilian population to enforce their ideals or beliefs.

This would reflect something like, the terrorist group against, or versus, the United States of America.

Last Note

This is what was gathered from the best definition of terrorism and a terrorist group. It has with it the behaviors and characteristics that emphasizes what classifies a terrorist and terrorist group, and the repercussions of any altercations between civilians and them and the law.

In my opinion after observing the other definitions, which are much shorter and broad, this would be the best one to use. This definition applies domestically as well as abroad. This article focuses on the responses domestically. This article is essentially food for thought.
