What is NGO (Non Governmental Organization)

Literally NGO means Non Governmental Organization but in practical use the NGO is used for a charitable organization. Sometimes NGOs are also referred as NPO (Not for Profit Organization)

How to start a NGO (Non Governmental Organization)

To start the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) the first step is to get the registration of organization as a charitable organization. The registration can be done under many statutory provisions, such as Society Registration Act, Indian Trust Act, Indian Registration Act, Indian Companies Act.

The most common form of NGO (Non Governmental Organization) is the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) as the Charitable Society or the Charitable Trust. I will discuss the difference in my next ‘Hub’.

Registration Process

First step toward registration of any NGO (Non Governmental Organization) is the selection of a name. There are some restrictions about using certain words in the name. In short you can not and should not have the name similar to or same as the other (Non Governmental Organization). If you are registering the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) under Society Registration Act, the name should not contain words like Police, Bureau, Authority, Board, and Government etc.

Second step is to functional area of NGO (Non Governmental Organization). It can be limited to one state or whole India. To register the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) at national level there is additional requirement to have eight desired persons form eight different members.

Third step is to draft the necessary documents. To register the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) under Society Registration Act you need many documents such as Aims and Objects, Memorandum of Association, Articles of Association. You also need one affidavit form the proposed president of NGO (Non Governmental Organization) and one NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the landlord/owner of the office address of NGO (Non Governmental Organization). You can download the necessary documents for Society Registration form for small fee.

If you are registering your NGO (Non Governmental Organization) as the charitable trust, all you need is the 'Charitable Trust Deed’. With trust you don't need to have members form eight states for all India level. You can download the necessary documents from above link for small fee.

Fourth Step is to collect the ID proof of all members. Get the copy of Identification proof such as Voter ID card, Driver License, Passport, and Government ID etc of all the members involved in the formation of (Non Governmental Organization). All the copy of Identification proof shall be attested in order to be used. Attestation by Notary Public or Oath Commissioner would work.

Last step is to submit the complete set of documents with duplicate to the concerned authority. The concerned authority for the registration of NGO (Non Governmental Organization) depends on the nature of your NGO (Non Governmental Organization) and the geographical location of the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) office. Generally the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) as Society can be registered at the ‘Office of the Registrar of Societies’ and as Trust the registration can be done at the ‘Office of Collectorate’ of your district. If you want you can comment here for the Registration of (Non Governmental Organization).

Start working as the NGO (Non Governmental Organization)

After the registration the NGO (Non Governmental Organization) can apply for many government funds and projects. The first you need to do is to open a bank account in the NGO’s name. After that you need to prepare a two page profile of your NGO for application purposes.

When you are done with these two requirements, then you can start searching for the private or government projects for funding. It is hard to get the ‘First’ project but not impossible.

For more information you can always write to us at support{@} , we are there to help your (Non Governmental Organization).
