Wigs

How to Choose a Wig

Would you ever wear a wig? Would you ever have a reason to wear a wig? If you purchased a wig would you know how to put it on? If you've considered buying a wig, this lens may help you decide if you want to wear a wig and where to find the perfect one.

There are many reasons you may choose to wear a wig. It may due to hair loss, also known as alopecia, a condition affecting humans, in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. You may choose to wear a wig because of complete or partial hair loss. You may choose to wear a wig just to change your style or color without going to the salon. We've all had bad hair days. Have you hated the color, the cut, the style? Buy a wig!

Wigs have come a long way and are just as nice as real hair, maybe more so! And most times it's difficult to tell wigs from real hair. So lets take a look at some wigs, the best way to choose one for yourself and how to prepare your head and hair before you wear it. You can find wigs at many salons, online stores and even department stores, but there is more to wearing a wig than just buying it.

Why Buy a Wig?

Why do people buy wigs?

Medical

Some medical reasons, such as alopecia (a medical condition causing partial or complete hair loss, effecting overall body but usually just the scalp) can cause the need for a wig. If you're being treated with chemotherapy and are losing your hair, you can call your local cancer society for resources to help you find stores in your area. You can visit one of these stores to compare styles, colors and whether you want synthetic or human hair and you may even be permitted to try on these wigs to see how they look on you.

Style

Some people simply don't like their hair or the style. Bad hair days are perfect opportunities to wear a wig. Maybe you recently had a haircut that is a total disaster or your colorist might have gone a little overboard with the red highlights. If you had chemically damaged hair, you could purchase a wig and cover up the chaos on your scalp by wearing a wig.

Costume

Wearing a wig with a costume is a common reason to buy a wig. If you were dressingup as Repunzel, for example, and had a short pixie hairstyle, chances are you just aren't going to get the same effect.

Convenience

Did you ever have those mornings when you're rushed getting ready for work, getting the kids off to school or when you have an appointment you just can't miss? Yeah, we've all had those mornings. Sometimes it's difficult to get ready and out the door on time is crucial, so why not wear a wig and save all that time styling your hair.

Just for Fun

Life is short, so why not just have some fun. The next time you're going out with your friends, wear a wig and get a completely different look. If you're not sure about wearing a wig in public because you're afraid everyone will be able to tell, try it out in a town where no one knows you. You'll get comfortable with wearing it and have a good time.

How to Decide Which Wig to Buy

If you're going to buy a wig, there are many things to consider before you purchase one because the prices can range from inexpensive to extremely expensive. It's true, "you get what you pay for," The higher quality wigs are going to be more

expensive and you'll get longer life from it and it will look better. An inexpensive wig will probably look nice if the color and style is flattering for your face and coloring, but chances are it might not last as long or look natural. So read on to see what to consider when buying a wig.

Price:

Before you can decide how much to invest in a wig, you should consider how much you're going to wear it first. Dig down into those deep pockets and check your budget and figure out how much you can spend without breaking the bank. If it's for bad hair days, a special occasion or just for fun, you might not want to spend a lot and you will probably get away with an inexpensive wig.

Style Ability:

If you choose an inexpensive wig, they are almost always synthetic wigs and you must realize that these types of wigs cannot be styled. Synthetic hair cannot be colored, permed or curled with thermal tools, so your option to change the style is limited. A natural or human hair wig may be more expensive, but you can color it, cut it and curl it just like you would your own hair because it is real hair. Although these wigs do tend to be expensive, there are many affordable ones offered.

Comfort:

Wearing a wig occasionally will not prompt you to worry about comfort. But if you plan to wear your wig every day, look for wigs that are finely woven. The wig should allow for air to circulate through the wig and onto your scalp. This will keep you cool and comfortable and is good for the wig and your own hair and scalp.

How to Choose a Wig - Find Your Size

All wigs are not the same, and if you want it to look natural and fit well, you have to measure for it first. Here are some easy instructions to determine the proper fit.

Measure around the head:

Before beginning, flatten your hair. Use a cloth tape measure or string to ensure accuracy. Starting at your natural hairline in front, follow your hairline to just above your ear. Measure around the back to the bend in your neck, just above your other ear, then around front to where you began.

Measure front to back:

Measure from your natural hairline in front, back over the crown to where your head meets the top of your neck.

Measure ear to ear:

Starting in front of one ear where your hairline ends, bring your tape measure or string up and over the crown to the front of your other ear.

Special Occasion

Are you getting married? Are you the Bridesmaid for your best friend? Are you graduating from college this spring? There are many occasions when a wig would be a great idea. You'll feel special and look great!

If you're serious about wearing a wig and you're going to invest the money, make sure it fits properly and looks good. We've all seen a bad wig. Perhaps it sets on the head wrong and the part isn't centered, causing one side to be longer than the other or it comes down too far on the forehead or the natural hairline just doesn't look natural. Sometimes people choose the wrong color or style and it just looks bad. That's okay if you're wearing a wig for a costume, but if it's for every day, normal wear, you want it to look natural and make you look good. Let's look at some of the common mistakes made by wig buyers.

Choosing a wig style that's too long:

Many people choose to buy a long, straight wig because they think it is more versatile and they can wear it in different styles, but long hair wigs are actually more maintenance because they require more combing and regular cleaning and conditioning to keep them manageable. Some people buy a long wig so they can wear it in a pony tail, and although you can wear a pony tail, it is recommended that you wear a low ponytail because the hairline at the base of the neck isn't going to look completely natural. Be careful what style you're going for.Choosing a wig style that's too full:

Have you seen a wig that just looks too puffy in the front along the hairline? Some wigs simply look like too much hair, especially if you have a petite face and features. If you're one of these people, choose a wig with lightweight

fibers pr a style that is wispy and feathery and avoid a heavy, thick wig.

Choosing a wig color that's too dark:

If the wig is going to be worn every day, don't go with a dramatic color or something that is way off of your natural color. When choosing a wig, it's probably safest to go with a color slightly lighter than your natural hair color, for a brightening effect.

Choosing a wig that does not match your natural hairline:If you normally wear bangs, going without may not look right. If have a feathery, layered style, going poker straight may also look unnatural.

Now obviously this is a doll, but there are people who wear their wigs this way...too far down on the forehead.

Wig Caps on Amazon

It's best to wear a nylon or mesh cap under your wig to help manage your hair and hide it. You don't want your own hair peeking out from under the wig anywhere. The caps help secure the hair so the wig will stay on better. The caps should be comfortable and should enable your hair to breathe underneath.

Lace Front Wigs

Lace front wigs are by far the most natural looking wig you can buy. The hair is sewn into a transparent mesh along the front so you have a much more natural looking hairline. They create a semi-permanent hair solution which looks very realistic from every angle.

For longer wear, lace front wigs attach to your head by glue or tape and create a highly realistic front hair line and a secure fit. Due to their lace construction, these wigs offer a great range of hair parting flexibility. Make sure you go to a stylist that knows how to do this properly, because sometimes it can be noticeable if not blended properly as seen below on Tyra's photos.

Buy a Wig for Your Face Shape

OVAL - The most common face shape is oval. Your forehead, cheekbones, jaw line and chin are in perfectly balanced proportion. And, because the oval shaped face is so proportional, almost any hair style will look good and suit your face shape. Beyonce is an example of this face shape.

ROUND - Your face is fairly short and broad, with rounded contours. Adding height to the top of the crown will make your face appear slimmer. A round face is flattered by a short, layered cut or wispy diagonal bangs. Try avoiding width and volume at the sides or heavy bangs which will make your face look more round.

Christina Ricci is an example of this face shape.

SQUARE - You have a broad forehead and cheekbones plus a wide chin. You want to create the illusion of length to the face by adding height on top and narrowness at the sides. Combing hair off the forehead will add height to your face. Sandra Bullock has this type of face.

DIAMOND - You have a narrow chin and forehead with wide cheekbones. With a diamond shaped face you should reduce width at the sides, and have more fullness at the chin. Bob hairstyles work great for this shape. Also try some fringe or bang to cover your narrow forehead. Try to avoid volume at the sides along the cheek line. Kate Hudson is an example.

HEART - You have a wide forehead, eye and cheekbone area with a pointed chin. To disguise the width, bring some hair onto your forehead. Keep hair close to the head at the eyes and slightly full around the jaw, also below and in front of the earlobes. The most flattering hairstyle for you is a pageboy type as well as subtle layers. Try avoiding short hair and choppy layers.

Naomi Watts has this face shape.

PEAR - This is the least common shape of face. Your face is widest at the chin and jaw line and most narrow at the hairline and forehead. Full layered looks adding width and volume from the eyes to the crown are ideal for the pear shape. This will deflect attention from the middle of your face. A classic shag hairstyle looks wonderful. Avoid jaw length blunt cuts. Kelly Osbourne has this face shape.

OBLONG - Your forehead, cheekbones and jaw line are all narrow. The neck is usually long and thin. To create the illusion of an oval face, add width and fullness at the sides with soft curls and waves. Having bangs will give you the softness that is needed and help shorten the facial appearance. Avoid one length cuts and short layers that add volume to the crown areas.

Liv Tyler is an example of this shape.
