One does not have to listen to the news very long to get caught up on the building confrontation on the Arizona border and see the coming showdown between the people of Arizona and the Federal Government as President Obama files legal action to render the Arizona immigration law as unconstitutional. The situation is Arizona is dire and the citizens of the state are suffering the ill effects of the situation by the hour. The Federal Government has been lax in its attitude toward solving the issue on any timely and/or effective basis.
It is interesting now that eighteen months into President Obama’s watch, he suddenly decides this is a high priority. Basically, he has already had eighteen months to solve it and has done nothing but ignore the pleas of Arizona to do so. In fact, up until recently, he as had a Democratic super majority in the Congress that could have easily pasted legislation to accomplish the so-called comprehensive immigration reform which the President demands to have in this matter. Now, at a point at which the President is under fire from all directions and on much softer ground with even his own party members, he comes to the American public citing the need to gain comprehensive reform on this issue and noting that it can only be achieved through bi-partisan efforts. Even a blind man can see the President has a different agenda in this process.
Let’s get the truth out on the table about the immigration issue. There are no righteous players in this game. The Democrats, along with the support of the President, have blocked all attempts to seal the leakage at the Arizona border because they desire to achieve amnesty for all the illegals here in the country and all that can get here after it is announced that America is pursuing a comprehensive reform to include amnesty. This creates potentially another 20 million Democratic voters in the country. If the border is sealed first without any commitment to amnesty, then the Democrats do not appear to be fighting for the best interest of the Latino and Hispanic communities thus potentially losing that voting base.
The Republicans are no less guilty in that even under the Bush Administration, the leakage across the Arizona border was not stopped and not significantly addressed. Republicans want the border sealed but there is big business pressure not to complicate the availability of cheap labor for such industries as agriculture and food processing in various areas around the country. The illegals have woven themselves into the workforce as a necessary element.
The President and the Democratic Party see the current timing of addressing this issue as essential to a positive impact at the polls in the mid-term elections in November. With the current situation in the Congress, it is highly unlikely that the President can get a bill into law prior to November and he is very much aware of that fact. This is the reason that he is so confident in beating the drum. President Obama loves to employ the use of frenzy and emergency need to push his flawed legislation into law without due consideration. It will not happen on this issue prior to November but the fact that he is pursuing it paints the Republicans into a corner. If they go along with his comprehensive legislation to include amnesty then they lose credibility with the American voting base which in the great majority disapproves of amnesty. They also lose credibility with the Hispanic community by opposing the comprehensive package. This improves the chances for many candidates of the democratic persuasion to gain votes in November.
The President is employing “selective blindness” on the immigration issue facing Arizona and is definitely not being truthful with the American public when he states that the issue cannot be resolved without comprehensive reform and bi-partisan support. He is turning this dilemma of our borders into nothing but a political football and the American voters need to call his hand on it.
The President took an oath of office to protect the “citizens” of this country from enemies both foreign and domestic. With the current state of affairs in the world with regard to terrorism and the desire to carry out terrorist acts against the citizens of the United States, the southern border along Arizona is a tremendous threat in that sense. By not taking action to shut down illegal movement across this border, the President is shirking his sworn duties to the citizens of America. In this day and time, this is an act of a dangerous and very serious nature and should not be disregarded by the people.
There are those both inside and outside our government who will say that “shutting down and securing the border” is not an option in that it is not within the scope of our capabilities. They have a term to describe that statement which is employed on a frequent basis nowadays….”bullshit”. If America cannot secure a border in Arizona then we need to pack our crap and come home from Korea, Irag, and Afghanistan because we are wasting our time and our manpower fighting something there that we are so unwilling to fight here at home. It’s not a matter of capability, it is a matter of will and a matter of guts and fortitude. Considering the makeup of what is coming across at present into Arizona, one could easily see where a line of strategically placed sniper towers manned with a staff of highly-trained and efficient marksmen could quickly establish a high level of deterrence among these people. This is not offered as the solution but an example of how serious we are willing to be about defending our borders. The solution certainly lies somewhere between where we currently are and the one suggested above and we need to find it and employ it.
This issue has two distinct elements and they are not tied together although the President insists on doing just that with them. One consideration is sealing and securing the border. The other consideration is what do we do with the roughly 12 million or more illegals that are already here in this country. The second is a valid issue but has nothing whatsoever to do with the first. It is simply offered as an excuse to do nothing about securing the border.
The current Administration really must consider the American people to be some really dumb clucks. In the past eighteen months the public has stood by and watched as dilemma after dilemma has played out with is administration only to end in the same plea to support emergency and urgent measures to cure a situation in which our established efforts have failed. The administration goes to great lengths to employ faulty logic in establishing the appearance that our current methods do not work and only offer untried “new” methods as the viable solution to our dilemma. In some circles, this is called “getting smoke blown up one’s ass”, and the American public needs to quit buying in on it.
We currently have the necessary laws in place to stem the situation in Arizona. Those are laws are either being minimally enforced or not enforced at all. The President wants you to believe those laws are inadequate, antiquated, and how failed in their ability to secure our borders and he does this in order to justify comprehensive immigration reform and gain the amnesty for the illegals that he so desires. Enforcement of laws pertaining to employers who hire illegals is down 74% on his watch. There is no motivation for illegals to stop coming over as long as there are jobs, welfare, housing, and over the top compassion for what amount to nothing more than breaking our current laws. As voters, we need to wake up and send some elected officials to Washington to promote the “will of the people.”
President Obama needs to get the message that America is sick and tired of this on going situation which is way overdue to be resolved. He needs to put his political desires away and risk his political future on taking care of the legal citizens of this country. He needs to lose the rose-colored glasses, stop pretending to be blind to the issues, and get on with the business of leading America. Shut down the border!
