How "bout now?

Big Oil Trumps Outrage

It happened on one of those dates in history, April 20th, traditionally one to reconsider getting out of bed. The Deepwater Horizon Explosion which killed eleven souls as well as destroyed a totality of life of which we will never be able to measure. Let us be clear, there had been numerous spills and fires on the Deepwater Horizon.

The Coast Guard cited BP 18 times for pollution violations, investigated 16 fires to include a plethora of additional incidents within the decade. One of particular note in 2008 involved the evacuation of dozens of workers when the platform began to sink due to incompetence. Apparently a vital section of pipe was removed from the platform's ballast system creating an unstable situation causing the platform to list.

This is but one of many issues concerning a technology way beyond human control. With plenty of blame to go ‘round, the Federal Government's arch enemy and nemesis, oversight, once again reared its ugly head from the depths of the unknown.

Suffice it to say, The House and Commerce committee made it clear, greater risks were taken due to budget and time constraints. Methane gas got away from the crew, escaping from the well eventually bursting through several seals and barriers before the inevitable occurred.

The explosion and ensuing fire just before ten at night gave the survivors less than five minutes to fend for their lives. The inferno consumed Platform sank approximately 36 hours later. The hapless nation was left only able to watch the daily feed from underwater cameras for too many a day and night. Yet, there was a lack of outrage.

Fore all the damage to the Ecosystem, no outrage. Fore the generations of Fisherman, no outrage; for those lives destroyed, no outrage. Fore the Coastal Waters and the pristine Beaches…There was no Outrage.

Pan Am Flight 103; Heathrow to JFK December 21st, 1988…It was a Boeing 747 with a name. They called it "Clipper Maid of the Seas". Our Kids coming home from Europe for Christmas made up a substantial portion of the 259 souls lost due to a successful premeditated terrorist attack upon the "Clipper Maid of the seas". The plane went down in Lockerbie, Scotland killing an additional eleven people on the ground, bringing the totality of destruction in cost of lives to 270.

It took 13 years to convict the Libyan involved in the bombing while his co-defendant was acquitted. Those who believe in mercy and forgiveness should have taken solace in a Life imprisonment sentence.

That’s not the world we live in anymore…fore in August 2009, the Scottish Government released him back to his homeland on compassionate grounds due to terminal Prostate Cancer.…to receive a heroes welcome, greeted by none other than Colonel Khadafy.

He was given three months to live, although he approaches his one year anniversary from being released… Still, no outrage. “One of the doctors that certified his life expectancy at less than three months now claims he could potentially survive for up to 20 more years”*…Outrage? …
