Is South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Having an Affair?

Governor Sanford about to Get Kicked in the Face by GOP

I find several of the tidbits of recent news about South Carolina Governor, Mark Sanford, to be utterly strange. In fact, I can't help but speculate that he's having an affair. Here are some of the facts leading me in this direction:

  1. His wife, when contacted, did not know where he was.
  2. He went to Argentina to relax on Father's Day weekend.
  3. His staff thought he was hiking along the Appalachian Trail.
  4. When asked about her husband's whereabouts, the First Lady of S.C. replied with a cool, "I'm just being a mom today. I don't know where he is. I'm just taking care of the children."

More Reasons to Suspect Cheating

What husband goes on a seven day trip without telling his wife where he's going? This would only happen in two circumstances:

  1. They're old, have been together forever, and tired of each other. The passion's gone.
  2. (A lot more likely) He's cheating on her and she knows it or is at least highly suspicious of it, while she may not have the proof.

Maybe I'm off base here, but I find it completely absurb that a married couple, with children who are still growing up, would have no communication about where Mark Sanford was going for the week. Not believable. Highly unlikely.

Wife Jenny Sanford Is Not Happy

There is so much damning evidence in this case...

Governor Sanford's wife, Jenny Sanford, did not seem super concerned (in a cold way) when she was asked about his whereabouts. The fact that he went to one of the most romantic cities in the world, Buenos Aires, strongly points to cheating in my opinion. His wife's attitude indicates either that she has known about this going on already or that she has just realized what's going on when she heard he was in Argentina.

The facts are though, I don't know any wife who doesn't keep track of where her husband is at least on a weekly basis... It's totally absurd.

Argentina v. Appalachian Trail

Of all weekends, what father would go away, leaving his entire family behind to go on a non-business trip -- on Father's Day!

"Honey... Kids... For this Father's Day what I want is... For you not to ask me where I'm going to be for the next week."

And the fact that his entire staff and security detail didn't know where he was suggests a secret sneaking off to do secret things. Furthermore, he was apparently not able to be contacted. I don't believe Governor Sanford would ever really be out of contact. I think what's more likely is he just wasn't answering his cell phone. They said that he decided to end the trip early because he heard about the commotion that was going on back in the US over his disappearance.

His car when found at the airport had a sleeping bag in it. He was either on his way to the Appalchian Trail when he decided to go to Argentina instead, or he had to make it look like he was going camping to people who were around when he left his house (i.e. his wife, kids). Or else, even if they weren't there he had to get his sleeping bag out of the house so it would look realistic that he was camping.

(Update: I just read an article over at the Daily Kos that says Gov. Sanford had one car parked at the Columbia, SC airport and another parked at the Atlanta airport.)

Clinton was the president but the republicans ran the congress.the congress has the real power.New World Order was declared by the first bush,in one of his speeches that was addressed to the world.911 was bin laden's doing.I know there's no stopping globalisation or NAFTA after these two policies was instated our economy has suffered,as far as "chickens coming home to roost"that's not what I'm saying what I am saying is "the foxes are in the hen house." globilization, and NAFTA is nothing more than saying cheap labor, with no health benefits, the economy is getting stronger but no one is hiring, jobs flying over seas,Americans need those you must be pro-globalization,pro-NAFTA,pro-deregulation,jobs vanishing, deregulated financial system making imaginary deals, equals a economy designed for the rich to get richer, and the middle class to lose everything, longer hours less money,no job security,be careful who you vote for,the republicans speak about fiscal responsibility but don't live by it,they speak about conservative values, but don't live by them, the evidence is right before your eyes, wasted all that time and money going after Iraq, when n.Korea was the clear threat, take down Iraq, now Iran is stronger and more dangerous, where's bin laden?nobody knows I would say the republicans basically dropped the ball on everything, they are out of touch with reality. If you want to walk right down that road holding hands with incompetents than hey I hope nobody else in this country feel the way you do.The Republicans have screwed up on ever single level that they can screw up on.And if they win this election they will take America from the toilet and push us further down in to the sewer.

I don't think the Republicans are the main reason we're in the position we're in. And your point about the Repubs controlling the White House form the 80's on up until now leaves out 8 years of Clinton, who I like.

If the election were today and it was Obama vs. Romney, yeah I think I would vote for Romney, and I voted for Obama this fall. But he's turning out to be more liberal than I thought he would be.

So you are anti-globalization? There is no stopping it. Just like the growth of technology, you can't stop it. And New World Order? I suspect you believe Bush and Cheney orchestrated 9/11, too? Or that it was at least "our chickens coming home to roost"?

just goes to show where his real priorities was at.on the beach thinking about booty, instead of focusing on reviving the south carolina economy unemployment third highest in the nation. So you've already decided to vote for romney?thats interesting.especially since we're about three and a half years know the republicans controlled the white house from the late 80's through out the 90's and all the way up until 2008,look what we got two wars,an economy on life support, jobs being shipped over seas, homeless population rising,we're looking over the edge at another great depression, and you want more of that more conservative lies, and games, the republicans only take care of the elite, open your eye's and look around you.NEW WORLD ORDER,NAFTA,GLOBALISATION,republican ideas, along with trickel down economics, and deregulation, the main reason we are in this recession heading in to a depression and you want more of that?

      Thanks for the nod Steve.

Yeah it was very odd wasn't it? Did you notice how he seemed to sort of openly muse about the specialness of this woman?

"Governor Sanford, is it over with this woman in Argentina?"

"Well it's funny. It's interesting how it all worked out."

At this point Romney's got my vote if he gets the nomination.

You called it Will--Sanford just announced it on CNN. In an odd, rambling, unrehearsed announcement, he confirmed the affair. I got on late but he mentioned something about talking about "God" with the woman. Sad that he included that as justification. Affairs happen but when you're the top guy in the State, you still gotta tell people when you leave the country. His Presidential ambitions are finished. With Ensign and now Sanford out, Mike "Evolution-is-too-complicated-for-me" Huckabee looks like the "cream of the crop" for the right wing Christian extremists. Boy is that scary.

@Wow The minute I heard his his wife's comment to the news that "She's just being a mom." That sort of sealed my conviction.

@chukmaty Yeah I feel bad too. His wife, and his boys are young. His wife looks like a good woman. What's up with the fact that his relationship started with this woman through email!? I bet it was an online dating site.

Last point: how thrilled is Obama? At least in a political sense. Sanford was the most visible opponent of the bailout.

Looks like it was an affair judging from the breaking news healine on drudge.

What have we come to as a country, I mean JFK could have orgies day in and day out while doing copious amounts of drugs and we would never hear about it, but now a mere Governor makes national news for strolling the beach of Brazil with a mistress ;)

This is really too bad, I feel horrible for what he has done to his family, I cannot imagine the pain he has put them through. How comletely selfish. What also sad, he was doing a great job as Governor.

I guess this is one less competitor for Mike Huckabee to deal with in becoming the next Ronal Reagan ;)

The verdict's in. This d-bag is just another Evangelist politician hypocrite.

Watching the news conference now. This is embarassing. I still think he might be gay.

By the way, did anyone notice how he apolgized for hurting the woman in Argentina first. Then his boys. Then his wife. And his "Tom Davis's of the world."
