Guns: It's Time to Stand Up to the gun lobby

Time to be courageous

In New Mexico, Nehemiah Griego, 15, killed his parents and his three younger siblings on Saturday because he got into a minor argument with his mother. He shot his mother while she slept and the 9-year-old who was sleeping with her. He then went in and shot two siblings who were still in their beds. His father was away, so, he waited hours and when he entered the door he shot and killed him.

He then loaded those guns, including an AR-15 rifle, into a car where he planned to kill more people in a local Walmart. For some inexplicable reason, he called a friend who talked him into meeting at his father's former church. The friend talked him into turning himself in and a security guard found the bodies and reported the shooting.

Greg Griego, a chaplain, was reported to be a former gang banger, who had turned his life around. He started a prison ministry and was the chaplain for local firefighters. He homeschooled his children. However, the question must be asked: What was a former gang banger doing with weapons? The police said they found many guns in the house,

In 1995, Christian Oberender, killed his mother with a shotgun. He was found civilly insane and spent years in a mental hospital. Last week, Oberender was found to have an arsenal of weapons in his home including an AK-47 and a Tommy Gun. The police also found letters that spoke about his murderous rage. He talked about how the beast inside of him was dying to come out. His only mistake was posting his arsenal on social media. It was also found that he had a permit to get all of his weapons because of a loophole in Minnesota's gun laws.

America is at a crossroad in the debate on guns. More people have been killed since 1968 by guns than in all of our countries wars put together. People who have lost their grips on reality are able to acquire weapons of mass destruction. Young people in ghettos across the country point weapons at each other in a war over turf that they claim as their own. Those on the fringe are preparing for the end times or for some race war that they await with eagerness.

The 2nd Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, but common sense must lead us into the future. No one wants to take guns away from responsible owners, but the question is how do we protect ourselves from those who can attain weapons so that they can destroy the lives of 26 people who only wanted to go to school and to work? How do we protect those whose only desire was to go watch a movie and entertain themselves? Where is the courage of America to do what is right?

Fear makes cowards of us all. Fear of the NRA has made our politicians cowards who fail to do what is right. Courage is the ability to do what is right in difficult times even though we are afraid. It is time to walk in courage and stand up to those who hold us in fear.

IB most gang members are kids. I understood your point. But I see them differently. They are kids.

My views are detailed in my hub, and apparently nothing I have said is going to make a difference here.

      Thanks for the hospitality.

I didn't make a personal attack on you, I commented that your statements are not current. If you work in San Bernardino, you should know that the city has gone in the red, and they have cut the police service. The gangs have increased their presence and activity because of the reduced presence of the police.

What you are doing is dangerous, and commendable and you are probably not getting the credit that you and others like you are doing for the community and the children. But, point about the gangs that I make is still relevant.

I would think that you would be more amenable to the gang control over the gun control which directly targets to bigger problem in violent crimes.

      Thanks

Amazingly, what I do today is teach those 'thug' children and ironically, I do it in San Bernardino. I teach them to read and write. I do it because I'm all about changing the culture. I teach literature, journalism, and writing. I'm bilingual so I teach kids who don't speak English. I also am the Academic Coach for our football and Basketball teams. Their parents are usually GREAT! I'm making a difference and you?

"I don't know anything about the politics of Detroit or Flint but I live in the Los Angeles area and was a journalist at the height of the Gang-era in Los Angeles. The height of that era was 1990 to 2000."

It is time to get schooled in the year 2013.

Read about what is happening in San Bernardino since the city went bankrupt.

habueld I have a novel thought for you........I notice how much you speak of gang violence.......instead of attacking guns, why not attack the communities and parents of those thugish children? I wasnt in a gang growing up? Why? Because mom and dad would have beat the crap out of me, none of my friends were in gangs? none of their friends were in gangs? We all had things to overcome as kids but now live in gatted communties and raise our families and go to church on Sundays.....................what happened to the parents of all those in gangs killing each other?? ..............go to the hood and fix the family unit and the violence will stop over night and the gun issue will disapear

I hold Mr. Bradley completely accountable. Just like Bush and Obama. You're barking up the wrong tree. It still doesn't change facts. Tom Bradley allowed the same abuses to continue for almost 30 years and never had the backbone to do anything about it. He had to carry that to his grave!

20 years in office and still not one ounce of accountability do you think he should have huh?

I learned something in my years, it's never argue with someone to whom facts don't matter.

This why democrats still scream "what about Bush!!!1111" So Obama never has to be held to account even after 4 years in office.

In no other business could you continually blame the guy before you and still remain employed.

Yours is the soft racism of lowered expectations.

Tom Bradley, history has shown, was nominated by a consortium of white business people to appease people and the Feds after the riots in the 60s. His police chief, Darryl Gates was a virulent racists. Bradley upheld many of the policies of previous administrations and had no authority over Gates. I wrote about racism and the crack epidemic for the Los Angeles Times at the time. We can argue about this for months.

The link above is my own investigation into the crack epidemic in Los Angeles and the rest of the country.

The gun control issue is a red herring to turn the spot light off of the real problem which are the gangs in the US.

There are over 33,000 gangs in the US and they have over 1.4 million gang members. They deal in illegal products and services, like drugs, prostitution, and human trafficking. Gun control will have little effect on them.

Also you might check that now the bad economy has caused many cities to go bankrupt or severely in the red. When they cut the police service the gangs move in and take over.

Taking guns away from law abiding citizens only leaves the bad guys and the police with the guns. There are more gang members than there are police to protect you.

I wrote a hub if you want details.

Oh, I see, you are restricting your time line, for LA alone, to keep any democrats from blame, I get it. Nice.

Funny how you didn't bother to say you meant only during those particular years in your post (I guess it was only bad when Republicans were in charge)

And let's just ignore the fact that Tom Bradley (D) was Mayor of LA from 1973 to 1993. And was for the 18 years leading up to the LA riots. Yeah, let's just leave that part out.

And just to be clear, Compton and Inglewood are separate cities, with separate PD's and local government, ALL have been democrat for decades, especially during your curiously limited time line.

I was a cop in that town for 17 years my friend, and I know the reality on the ground there.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you can't have your own facts.

The gang violence I was talking about in Los Angeles happened from 1987 to 2000 during the administrations of 2 Republican Governors and two Republican Mayors. Since then the murder rate and crime rate have dropped drastically. Sorry to burst your bubble.

And what do all those cities have in common?

Democrat leadership and stiff gun laws. Neither of which are working.

The most murders by city in 2012 were committed in two Michigan cities: Detroit and Flint. However, the media has never cared or written about the crimes in the ghetto. In Los Angeles, though kids were dying every night in Compton, Inglewood, and East LA, it wasn't reported until a UCLA student was killed in Westwood.

habueld...........Most killings each year in America are done in Chicago where criminals have the least amount of punishment, Stiff laws and prison time will deter crime, States with open carry laws have less crime, I bet more people are saved by guns than killed by guns, NRA publishes 10 to 15 a MONTH, If one story has a home with 5 people how many of those few stories are saving totals of thousands?

so blame the person behind the gun, blame the people that allowed this to happen. do not blame the gun for the crime. why are killers leading themselves to death by posting what they did within moments after or will do within moments of posting the notice. Social media sites have become a very big part of the culture today, and it is not to blame but to use this to our advantages. We should have people constantly monitoring these social media sites to find these criminals and the mentally unstable people. the legal law-abiding citizens need to step and find ways to stop and deter the crime from happening.

Thank you, habueld, for some excellent examples of the damage that impulsiveness and other mental dysfunction can do when heavily armed.

It has been estimated that, at any moment, about ten percent of the U.S. populace is experiencing some form of diagnosable mental disorder. Not all dysfunctional thinking will result in deadly violence. However, mental problems present a 'moving target' that is at the heart of this debate. To make it complicated, disordered thinking rises and falls in individuals, and it shifts from person to person over time. It's the tricky issue in the gun debate, and therefore it is not sufficiently addressed, especially by the simplistic thinkers.

Nehemiah Griego killed his parents on Saturday and 10 to 15 stories can't trump the thousands killed every year!

Oberender was found with guns last week.

waiting to hear where he got the guns....

There were several in the house did the parents know?

If they belong to the parents..then its the parents responsibility to harbor them safely...

Former gang banger..the weapons were most likely stolen or bought illegally..or both..

Even though no one was shot with an AR-15 or AK-47 this gives a reason to ban the AR-15 for some reason.

I bet that both of these people had peanut butter in their homes too. That fact is just as relevant as the fact that they owned assault weapons since neither Peanut butter nor assault weapons were used in these crimes.

News flash.... MURDER IS ILLEGAL. These guys are going to break any law that they wants. What does that have to do with shredding the constitution of the USA?

You mentioned two stories from years ago but failed to mention the 10 to 15 stories the NRA puts in their magazines each month where would be killers and thieves are killed or scared away by those owning guns? Under you ideology we should outlaw spoons to stop obesity and heart disease? Maybe pencils too because they make mistakes??
