Do You Think Jodi Arias Was Guilty Of First Degree Murder?
Who Is Jodi Arias
It was after a interview with local Fox TV affiliate station that Arias was placed on suicide watch. She told the local TV station that she would much rather have the death penalty than life in prison. She said that death was much preferable to life in prison. In the next few days the jury will be making a decision as to whether Arias will get the death penalty or life in prison.
She had told other people and friends over the last year or so that she had no desire to set out the rest of her life in prison. But even if she was to receive the death penalty from the jury death will not come quickly. Many people set on death row for 15 to 20 years or longer after being sentenced to death.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said that the guilty verdict closes the case on the state versus Arias but that the search for justice for Travis Alexander will go on. The jury will be the one that has to decide the fate of Arias. They will be weighing out the factors of the case and deciding if the crime was cruel enough to be eligible for the death penalty. The jury can if it so chooses sentence Arias to life in prison. We will have to wait and see what happens.
Arias really over killed Alexander but at her trial her and her attorney tried to claim self defense but the jury didn't buy it. During her trial Arias told the packed courtroom and the jury that Alexander was a cruel and controlling person and she was in fear for her life. She claimed that on the day of the murder that they had been photographing each other and that at one point when Alexander had the camera that he dropped the camera and attacked her. She claimed she had no other choice but to defend herself.

Its interesting at how fast she converted to the Mormon Faith. Almost everyone they knew said they were a couple by February of 2007 and often talked in front of family and friends that they were going to get married soon. But it wasn't to be. The couple officially broke up on June 29th 2007. Arias moved to Mesa Arizona until sometime in April of 2008 when she moved to her Grandparents home in Yreka California. People who knew her said that as time went by she seemed to become obsessed with Alexander and what he was doing. They said that she did not threaten him but seemed like a infatuated school girl.

At the time of his fathers death he and his siblings were taken in by their paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Preston Alexander Sarvey and it was the grandmother that introduced Travis and his siblings to the Mormon Faith. His Grandmother Sarvey passed away in 2012.
Alexander was a motivational speaker and he was a salesman for the Internet Marketing Company, Pre Paid Legal Services.
it was at his home where the deceased body of Alexander was found in the shower. His throat had been cut, he had been stabbed multiple times and he had been shot in the head. The local sheriff at the time said that it was clearly over kill and possibly a crime of passion.
The Police Investigation And What They Discovered
At the time of his murder Alexander had planned a trip to Cancun Mexico. People also involved with Pre Paid Legal were not able to get in touch with Alexander and Alexander had missed an important conference call on the night of June 4th , 2008. People who worked at Pre Paid Legal with Alexander went to his home but were told by his room mates that he was out of town. They knew better and the room mates found a key that was to Alexanders Master Bedroom Suite. They entered the suite and Alexanders body was discovered in the shower.
They called 911 and also told the authorities that a former girl friend who was Arias had been stalking him and had in fact slashed the tires a few days before on Alexanders car. When authorities arrived they discovered huge pools of blood in the hallway inside the suite and Alexander was indeed dead in the shower in his bathroom.
It was later discovered by police detectives that even after Alexander was dead that Arias had continued to call the cell phone of Alexander and left several messages. Possibly attempting to build an alibi. She told police that the couple had made up over the phone and that Alexander had planned to visit her in May of 2008 but that because of his busy work schedule that his plans had changed.
There was a reported break in at the home of Arias' grandparents in early May 2008 and one of the items taken was a 25 caliber pistol. A spent 25 caliber round was discovered near one of the sinks in the master bedroom suite. Alexander's badly damaged digital camera was located inside a washing machine downstairs in the house. Although the images had been deleted Mesa Arizona police were able to restore the photos and they were of Arias and Alexander in compromising intimate positions. There was a last picture taken of Alexander alive and well in the shower at 5.29 P.M. on June 4th 2008.
A series of bloody hand prints were found in the shower and the DNA test done on the samples said it was a mixture of blood from Arias and Alexander. However Arias continued to make the claim that the last time she had seen Alexander was in April of 2008. Even when detective Esteban Flores confronted her with what the police knew she stuck to her story.

More Information About Jodi Arias
People who saw Jodi Arias in Utah shortly after the murder happened said that her hands were bandaged. She also wore long sleeves even though the weather at the time was very hot. Arias told friends she had been injured while working at her waitress job at Margaritaville. It is interesting to note that after she was arrested it was discovered by investigators that no such restaurant existed in the area and that Arias had never worked there. It is now known that at the time of the murder she worked at a restaurant in Yreka California called Casa Ramos.
Arias would tell police one story after another only to have to go back and change her story again. And the media didn't help. There was almost a circus atmosphere in the courtroom and in the area. One jury member was dismissed early in the case for misconduct and another was later dismissed after he was stopped and charged with drunk driving. Several times the police asked the judge for a mistrial but the judge refused and the trial continued. It is now believed that the Arias trial was one of the most expensive murder trials ever in the state of Arizona.
On July 8th 2008 a grand jury indicted Arias for first degree murder. On July 15th 2008 she was arrested at the home of her grandparents in Yreka California. It was not until September 5th 2008 that she was extradited to Arizona where she entered a plea of, Not Guilty.
Initially Arias gave three different stories about her whereabouts at the time of the murder. Originally she told police that she had not been at the home of Alexander at the time of the murder. Then she said that yes she had been at the home of Alexander and that two intruders broke in demanding money from Alexander and that they killed Alexander and attacked her. Then she changed her story yet again and claimed that what happened at the home of Alexander had been the result of domestic violence and that she had killed Alexander in self defense.
This was the story that she continued to tell during the trial and at times while she told the story she broke down and cried several times on the witness stand. The trial against Arias began on January 2, 2013 in Maricopa County Courthouse in front of judge Sherry K Stevens. From the start district attorney Juan Martinez sought the death penalty.
Arias was appointed two defense attorneys. They were Jennifer Wilmott and L. Kirk Nurmi. They presented the theory that domestic violence had indeed been the problem and that Arias had killed Alexander in self defense. 1.4 million dollars was spent on the defense for Arias.
It was not until May 3 2013 that closing arguments took place and the trial was sent to the jury. On May 8th , 2013 the jury returned a verdict of guilty of first degree murder. In the next few days, quite possibly the next few weeks the jury will decide if Arias gets life in prison or the death penalty. If she receives the death penalty she will join other women on Arizona's death row at Arizona State Prison Complex Perryville at Goodyear Arizona. Since the death penalty was resumed in 1976 34 individuals in Arizona have been executed. The method of execution is lethal injection.

Arias made the claim many times in media interviews that no jury is going to ever convict me. I am innocent she said and claimed she believed in the justice system and said that she was not guilty. No jury will ever convict me she said. But the jury did convict her and may well sentence her to death. Many people were surprised that the jury took as long as it did. Just before it brought back the verdict guilty of first degree murder some people had speculated that the jury might be hung and there would be a mistrial. But it was not to be.
