Updated on July 7, 2010

His wife bore 7 children. Only 3 of those children lived to be adults. The other 4 died young from the effects of living in poverty.

Karl Marx was a 'thinker'. He sat in a chair and thought about what it must be like to be a working man.

Rather than experiencing the world as it was, Marx thought about how he wished it would be.

Though he had never worked, Marx concluded that a working man was selling his soul to his boss.

In particular, Marx thought about the new process of making cotton thread by machine, in a factory. What he concluded is that the owners of the factories became wealthy while the workers made wages barely enough to live on. He did not consider that men were leaving the farms to work in the factories because the pay was steady and there was one day off a week, much better conditions than on the farm.

Marx decided the workers should own the factories. He wrote loftily of the toil of the workers, without seeming to have any understanding of investment in order to construct the factory. Nor did he bother his mind to consider all that goes into managing a factory. He just saw men working and found it so repulsive he decided they should at the least own the factory so as to save their souls.

The fact that Marx never worked in itself makes his 'thinking' suspect, but much worse is how Marx provided for his family.

For most of his adult life, and in particular while his children were young, Karl Marx's main source of income came from his friend, Engels, who periodically sent money to support the family.

Engels, in turn, received his money from - cotton mills! His family were owners of a mill in Manchester, England. Engels himself lived off the workers, and the money he sent to his friend Karl Marx was from the profits of the factory.

Karl Marx lived off the toil of factory workers while bemoaning their fate and 'thinking' of how it ought to be.

Karl Marx was a parasite. What sort of man can watch his children go hungry and bury four of them but refuse to work in order to provide for them? The money he received from Engels was never enough to raise the Marx family out of poverty. Certainly their circumstances were worse than those of the factory workers. And Marx was an educated man. He certainly could have found work had he wanted to.

Marx's philosophy of a worker selling his soul seems to be his own excuse for his negligence toward his wife and children.

Did he think it was better for his children to die than for him to get a job and provide for them?

What's astonishing is that a loser such as Karl Marx is taken seriously, his philosophy touted as the working man's utopia.

Of course, wherever Marxism has been instituted, be it in Cuba, in North Korea, in China, in Russia, the workers have never found themselves better off. In fact, Marxism brings with it famine, starvation, and death.

Marx had no experience in the world, no experience working. His experience seems confined to sitting in a chair 'thinking'. And as he thought he contrived a theory which was no more than his own excuse for not working.

Those people who espouse Marxism as the way the world ought to be are no better than Marx himself. Chances are they too are parasites. They're certainly not people who truly care about others. They just want to do like Marx, live off someone else's toil.

Is it true that Karl Marx would have his wife have sex with his landlord, for rent money? And that he also liked to watch while he smoked cheap cigars and wrote the communist manifestos? Is he ground zero for cuckoldry?

“The ideal tyranny is that which is ignorantly self-administered by its victims. The most perfect slaves are, therefore, those which blissfully and unawaredly enslave themselves. A truth’s initial commotion is directly proportional to how deeply the lie was believed. It wasn’t the world being round that agitated people, but that the world wasn’t flat. When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic.” –author Dresden James

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good

of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live

under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.

The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may

at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good

will torment us without end for they do so with the approval

of their own conscience." C. S. Lewis

collectivism is absolving oneself or personal responsibility and putting the onus on the collective. it is how parasites justify their existance off the labors of others.

marx could have worked but refused.

so wehter you call it socialism, fascism, marxism or communism.... utopias never work

in 1665 it was tried in the Americas at Jamestown. when they arrived? the land of plenty. next summer when the ships returned? half the colony had died and the other half was starving

China modeled themselves based on Marxism. It was not until they embraced Capitalism that they emerged into the second largest economy in the world. Marx theories fail to take into account how the world is actually built and works. Utopia is a great "idea" but has never existed (I personally grew up to be an adult and stopped believing in fairy tales). Like it or love it, but America is proof that the opposite of Marxism is what really works. Countries that embraced Marxism in the 20th century are now looking to model their economies closer to Capitalistic principles while maintaining an authoritarian governmental system. Bottom line: The world works better when people are responsible and have a voice (i.e. vote) to determine their future. Happy to be apart of the Western world:)

Excellent article and all is true.

When it comes to economics, before believing someone in such an important issue we as a people must ask and examine with a fine tooth comb the person who is advocating Socialism.

Understanding economics does not come from theories, books, and hear say but comes from inside people who strive, work hard, save, and with all that torment throughout life create and build everything we see around us.

It cannot be understood by those who never work, nor those who work some bit, nor squanders who have never sacrificed, nor those who have never experienced what it takes to succeed. To understand is to have walked the path and no book nor thought can ever replace the experience.

Watch out for the academics and neo-cheaters who never got their hands dirty who only do the talk but will never do the walk. They are hungry Wolves for their talk is worthless and seek to devour what is rightfully yours.

Another perspective comes up about centralized control.

I was researching the history of angels and came across the history of the fallen angels.

Satan makes his bid for control of the world through a one-world order.

This explains the realities that have been expressed so well by Steven DeMaria and others. Nothing is beneath the top down control of the evil money changers/ Rothchilds / world bank/ Ashkenazi of which Karl Marx happened to have been one.

If socialism is so good for us & it sells itself. How come it has to use stealth & deceit to advance its agenda ? marxism in one form or another is always changing its name to throw off the ignorant & unawre. Liberalism, progressive, national liberation front, blah, blah, blah, you get the picture. barrack obama is a card carrying member of "the new American socialist party". What happened to "the old American socialist party" ? Did it run out of somebody else's money ? You look at ANYWHERE marxism in any form has reared its ugly face & you'll find inequality, poverty, injustice, corruption, & MURDER !!!! The genius of marxism is, is it makes the slave think that he's not a slave. But when ANYONE is dependent upon govt for their sustenance & survival, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE !!!! Those at the top tier level in a socialist world live pretty good don't they ? I wonder where the average marxist rube thinks his place at the table is going to be ? Do they think that their going to be dinning with george soros or barrack obama ? Do they think that michael moore is going to accept a govt healthcare plan or live in govt housing? The whole cornerstone of marxism is selfishness, self importance, greed, envy, & jealousy. karl marrx was a lazy, selfish, self important bastard who espoused "workers of the world unite" & then he didn't even work himself !!!!!! That's the example I'm supposed to follow ???!!!! It's just more UNEARNED moral superiority from the "we know what's best for you" crowd. The love of marxist theory is the root of ALL evil. marxists have such an emotional need for the fantasy to come true, that they don't care how many people have to suffer for it .marxism is the opiate of the ignorant, lazy, & selfish.

I guess you could say was a prototype of today's leftist's. Do what I say but not what I do. I think their are some important insights to learn from Marx that apply to the nature of the leftist movement:

      1) Hypocrisy- Marx benifited from the very institution that he critized. I wonder if it came down to it, if he'd been willing to refuse Engle's support out of principle.

      2) Moral deficiency- Marx's claims the moral high ground as he attacts business owners and proports to advocate for the worker. This is coming from a man who neglects his own family and bites the hand that feeds him.

      3) Immaturity- Points 1 & 2 well demonstrates a degree of immaturity

      Right on Dave

Long before Marx, examples of how Socialism fails are provided in history. The first settlers from Europe in North America started out working collectively with communal values and they almost starved the first winter because everyone believed they could benefit form the labor of others and did not apply them selves to life’s WORK.

The next Spring land was divided up for possession and people were given the responsibility to grow their own food. They flourished and our USA prospered with this incentive. The inept intellectuals that spew out their RATIONALIZATIONS for how things should be more just, bask in the prosperity of a successful society while condemning it. Even as Europe slides into bankrupt decay from their latest attempts at socialism living off the past work, this will be proven again.

Thomas Jefferson elaborated on these simple truths.

The great propagandist of socialism, Ralph Waldo Emerson became enlightened to the shortcomings of socialism and communism eventually, and quit touting its elusion.

In simple terms the left wing socialist just need to, grow up.

See the world as it is beyond want you want it to be.

When it does not conform to “you” don’t go into denial and hid in the collective rhetoric.

Try something else, don’t be lazy and try to think for your self.

Consider what an original thought might be.

See the subject from several new angles or perspectives.

Consider what it is to be eclectic.

People honestly, you are impossible. You're defending a man who's works have been a reason for so much bloodshed, for the destruction of grand empires likes the one Russia had, and for many revolutionaries and dictators. This man is a typical philosophy or history major. Without any sort of direction and holding a degree that is useless in most respects, he decides to teach everyone about how the world should be without ever working or knowing what the world is about. His reasoning was absurd, how private property is the cause of Greed. Really? And people try to defend this knowing fully well it's worthless.

Questions about the notion of an ad hominem fallacy

Doug Walton has argued that ad hominem reasoning is not always fallacious, and that in some instances, questions of personal conduct, character, motives, etc., are legitimate and relevant to the issue,[13] as when it directly involves hypocrisy, or actions contradicting the subject's words.

The philosopher Charles Taylor has argued that ad hominem reasoning is essential to understanding certain moral issues, and contrasts this sort of reasoning with the apodictic reasoning of philosophical naturalism.[14]

    • profile image

      unavailable 5 years ago

      @ DanielTom

Researching Ad hominem, I would think it would be great if that premise did not exist.

However it does and there is a gray area around which the ability to extrapolate a summation is nullified. It calls into question all reasonable thought.

Fundamentally it is at the root of many of the problems in the exercise of laws here in the USA. It nullifies the value of a jury when a Judge decides to withhold information from the members of a jury.

In a process where, conversation or argument on a subject degrades by personal attacks, it is better served to call attn. To the fact that the efforts are “Convoluting “ and diminished

As a result of the intent being disruptive and degrading to the goal.

When examining Karl Marx it is prudent to understand the foundation of the character of the individual generating the philosophy. The proof of this is to examine the success or failure in the resulting socialist movements. Socialism has always been and always will be a failure. There is still a despairing dichotomy with the central control having the highest quality of life while the masses suffer wanting the basics of life including food, warmth and shelter. Even Waldo Emerson eventually saw the shortcomings of the socialist argument in application.

It appears to me that there are selective comments that are in contradiction.

I refer to Norm 6 in his explanation of Marx reducing things to two classes.

This then became the premise for dichotomous thought / Good and bad apples.

“that would just place us further from the truth”

Some times the lessons in life are to simply, not make the same mistakes.

To assume that Marx had anything to offer as truth is a presumption.

The ( proof of truth ) then are the flaws in his theories and values, this goes to the subject.

He allowed 3 of his children to starve to death!

There is nothing even slightly redeeming in his character.

The only thing to learn from him is the shortcomings of rationalization.

Now “someone who is less fortunate” The ( "Social Covenant."?) does not justify the pervasive entitlement socialist model that is being exercised today in the USA for example. The overwhelming growth and greed of the Bureaucracy is an example of what happens when this responsibility is taken away from the family and the local community. Jesus gave us all PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for this when he stated. “ What you do for the least among you, you do for me”. Incidentally I took care of my mother in he later years until she passed on.

The current socialist processes in these USA have been doing everything possible to guide people to relying on the government for everything. (Let Me Help You) says the spider to the fly. Do not rely on anyone but the government, we can control you.

“When he referred to the Bourgeoisie, the people that had wealth, meaning for centuries they were exploiting people”. With the pervasive development of Marxist socialism in the USA and indeed the entire world via the UN Agenda 21, Do you see the Bourgeoisie going away, diminishing, or do you see the growth of surveillance, overwhelming student and community debt, restrictions on every aspect of human life, by centralized government controlled by the very Bourgeoisie that was to be diminished by the development of socialism? Try starting a business, etc.

You can find out much more about this researching the (Precautionary principle), it is at the heart of the UN Agenda 21. In short it says do nothing until you can prove that it will not cause any harm. Meanwhile the international community supports Monsanto. Thousands of farmers in India have committed suicide in protest to Monsanto.

(Is there really no room for everyone to win?) Any of us win when we please the lord God. Be a natural man and recognize your angel. The love you get is equal to the love you give. Avoid the snares and the evil in life. Stay focused and take time to enjoy creation. In the 60’s there was an understanding that when you can see past your self you will find piece of mind. Do these things and yes you are indeed a winner.

Coddle and cushion you’re self and others from life and you miss it, in the cocoon of safety.

I hope I have done you some service and I applaud your questioning these things.

Lord knows you are chastised if you do not follow the linear academic authoritarian path,

while you are in school and I would hope you recognize that “Education tends to stupefy” See Gulliver’s Travels with Ted Damson in this regard. This aspect is as old as any of our references and as it was in Old England It is today.

And I am not apologizing for being long winded. I have taken my time to do this.

It is at the heart of what is going on and sometimes it deserves more than the sharp quip.

To some extent one could argue Marx was not the best role model. But to call his ideas dumb, foolish, evil? Isn't that a little pretentious?

John Stuart Mill suggested that all humans were NOT infallible, that all opinions should be considered if not then it would suggest that we are infallible. If we were to reject and condemn Marxist ideologies that would just place us further from the truth. If you are suggesting that "life is tough, deal with it", what would that mean if your mother was handicapped and unable to work? Would it be justified for her to live a life of poverty, for her to be left behind without any consideration for her right to live a good life?

I do believe in working hard and to be rewarded for working hard. But I don't consider exploitation of someone who is less fortunate as "hard work". How does one justify exploitation of humanity?

That's not to say that those who started from poverty and made it to a good standard of living are to be punished or scrutinized. I say good for you! But this isn't even what Marx was talking about in the first place. When he referred to the Bourgeoisie, he was referring to the people that had wealth, meaning for centuries they were exploiting people and controlling all aspects of the economy and culture.

Should one man have all that power? Should they be able to dictate what is good for us? How do they know what is best for us, to whom I say has the right to say what is good or bad, right or wrong, when we are NOT infallible.

There is a fine line for good and bad, but its common sense that we wouldn't want anything bad to happen to us or to anybody else. Rousseau and Hobbes dictate this idea of self-preservation in the "Social Covenant."

In the end why do we have to have winners and losers? Is there really no room for everyone to win? Who said that there was no room for everyone to be winners? Why do we have to listen to this person? Why does there have to be a hierarchy or a stratification? Isn't everyone commenting here intelligible for us to govern ourselves?

Anyways this was kind of long so I apologize. I hope whoever reads it will maybe understand what I'm trying to say or can offer me some constructive criticism. It would be great if people can offer some of the questions I bring up because I honestly don't have them. I don't have a degree and I currently do not work for income but I have before. I am a college student and working at a social psychology lab and am thankful I have parents that are financially able to take care of me for now and I am committed to repaying them as soon as I finish school. I certainly hope I don't end up like Marx [a loser some of you label as] just because I have some good ideas about improving society and I like to think and use my brain for other things besides making profits.

      Norm you are right on.

The “us and them” dichotomous thought is part of the authoritarian educational system.

It also makes it easier to sway the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat via propaganda.

It is an inevitability when working with systems that control from the top down.

If we are to have a successful republic we need to reset and make sure that this process is cut off at the knees. Meaning school staff and government bureaucracy are strictly non-union . You may want to research Woodrow T. Wilson and Ralph Waldo Emerson in regard to the history of propaganda if you have not as yet. Another great book I am sure you will enjoy is

“ They Sky’s the Limit” by Dr. Wayne Dyer.

The bottom line is that there will never ever exist a society that doesn't have a bourgeoisie. A society is made up of free individuals, but Karl Marx decided to demonize the individuals who have succeeded and worked hard, and he radically simplified society into only two classes - "bourgeoisie" and "proletariat." By doing that, he created a "us" against "them" mentality that created the messes we have today.

Even if there were a society that abolished the bourgeoisie, would a government exist? Having a "government" per se is acknowledging that someone has more power than you do. Therefore, under communism, there can only exist total authoritarian government or anarchy, both extremely dangerous. This is why a limited constitutional republic, like the United States was before Communist influences, is the ideal and the most free political system.

Marx was a satanist. the harsh truth is that he was a rationalizing hypocrite. He was evil and too lazy to even care for his family. Marx was a loser and yet people have the time to write about him. Doesn't that sound paradoxical? Secondly, the judges that sit in their chairs decide on the cases. They've themselves not been robbed or raped. How could they do it unless they've been through the same pain/agony? We need to do something about it. If one a good baseball player does not make him a good lover and just because one is not a good lover does not mean that he can't be a good baseball player. Please try to read at least half of what X says before you start writing about X (whosoever that X be). Unless you do that, you are merely indulging in religious warfare. That's nice but the title of the thread should spell that out. Why can't a boozer think? Just because it's a teetotaller's thread? It sounds like a man's claim that women are dumb, WHY?

Looking at the history of the contamination of our society by Marxism through Harvard to Woodrow Wilson, Progressives democrats / Federal income tax / to Obama's March 16th, 2012 EO Section 201(b) making us all in the USA slaves, things tend to get interchangeable.

In what way is that freedom? Freedom for me is the ability to do whatever you want, not the freedom to have to work a full-time job in order to survive. That's what Marx actually taught, what actual freedom is.

      Dear Brent

Does your definition of an intellectual include the need to use of profanity because they can not find an intelligent way of expressing them selves?

Critical eclectic thought alludes the linear thinker that is deluded into thinking that he or she knows something because they have read it. I have studied the political left and indeed I used to be one of them. Then I woke up to the hypocrisy and saw through all their high ideals. One thing I realized about the Marxist left is that they have a weak foundation of intelligence and are prone to reacting rather than responding with viable solutions to problem that they them selves would actually have to do some WORK on.

So you leftist like Brent and those that reject the label that still are lazy elitist, the Fabians etc. as you may deny God the creature in favor of your god the government and the authoritarian process. Know this, your are being betrayed. All that your are rejecting that is good in this US of A and taking for granted will be lost if you don’t wake up as well.

Break the bonds of peer pressure and linear thought, see past the vale of socialist lies and propaganda. Get beyond the immediate desire to react and think as an individual for your self for a change. Collectivism is not the way to deal with your fears. Take personal responsibility and quit wining like Karl Marx. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, if your friends laugh at you for acutely doing some work ignore them. You will survive the pain of rejection because you are actually becoming part of the solution. Your peer group has been manipulated by peer pressure from your teachers. Gain something that Karl Marx never did, a spine to stand erect with.

Sheila B. you are obscenely ignorant. Karl Marx's "job" was that of a scholar, of the highest caliber I might add. Don't think for a second that this is not work, or that thinkers did not once physically labor. He is also often misunderstood, and you are perpetuating that unfortunate habit in your indignant article (so Marx is a 'loser'. I suppose you are a winner?). I am a social scientist by the way, and I know anti-intellectualism when I see it, and you are it.

I also want to point out the irony of your attack; that if you had your way and Marx put down the books and picked up a trowel or worked in a factory, that would actually be closer to the communist hells that have existed historically. You simply deride 'thinkers' for being just that. You don't understand, let alone appreciate, the division of labor, and the contribution of ideas to progress.

The word 'socialism' (like capitalism, communism, liberalism, etc..) is a complicated term, with varying meanings. Very few people dispute this; even ignorant people such as yourself who use such words can respect they are vulnerable to critique. And totalitarianism is far more complex than being able to be reduced to certain ideological programs and figures. You don't really address these things much anyways, as your blog is simply a polemic against a man.

And for the record, there are some successful socialist countries, in Scandinavia, and to an extent Western Europe, Canada, New Zealand, etc...

Your tirade against him is merely an expression of some deep-seated bias, and a need to look for a scape goat. This type of thinking can always find even dumber people to follow it, thereby making you think you're right.

So fuck you, and fuck anybody who ever wants to take down an intellectual. You are the ones condemning Socrates to death.

First of all, Marx was bisexual which effects gender responsibilities. His work could not have supported him or his family because it was hundreds of years ahead of its time. Certainly, he made some vital mistakes which were compensated by Left-Communism and Anarchist-Communism but his critique of Capitalist fascism is dead-on.

My fellow Americans here we are at the mercy of an absolute true Marxist in every since of the word, our current President. He has brought this country to it's knees through the detriment of our economy. I believe he has achieved what he set out to do all along. You liberals should feel ashamed of yourselves for not doing your homework before voting.

By this logic, isn't the true hypocrite someone like Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman, Friedrich von Hayek or John Maynard Keynes, who, as you put it, spent all their time on their ass 'thinking' instead of working in the capitalist economy they all loved so much?

Thinkright ~ Money is not the root of all evil, the Bible says the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. And we have much evidence of that today in our society, a country spoiled with riches who covet more and more but don't want to work for it. The entitled attitude that others owe them an education, a house that they demand never be foreclosed on when they don't pay the rent. What idiotic parents/government taught the kids to think like this and where in the world do they think the money comes from to pay for all this? Someone needs to educate Americans that anything they get for "free" is coming from someone else and they are a leach on society, a parasite that is destroying this wonderful country and the foundation built by our Forefathers !! Whatever happened to working for what you want or need, never taking a handout from others and taking pride in your accomplishments? Part of the problem is the school system that doesn't want to fail a student because it will hurt their self esteem so the child doesn't have to work or invest in anything to get ahead. Then they go out in the world, unprepared to handle failure and have no character to bull themselves up by their boot straps and digging in to succeed. The dumbing down of America starts first in the home by over indulgent parents and then the schools take over and continue the sick, weak thinking so more and more become slaves to the government. WAKE UP AMERICA !! Socialism has never worked in any other country so get off your lazy butts, get a job and take pride in this wonderful country that draws people from other countries because of it's greatness !!

True communism has never been accomplished. Ha! Gee, I've never heard that before. It's been accomplished plenty of times, and when it is, that's precisely when the massacres and all the evils that accompany central planning happen. It was accomplished for example in India without violence, yet, it turned a country that was economically prosperous for two hundred years into a disaster of famine and mass poverty. Communists are the dumbest people on earth. No single person is capable of planning for two or three households successfully, what makes anyone think an entire market can be planned centrally? Marx was most certainly a hypocrite and a parasite, it's a FACT. Great article, brilliantly honest, I applaud the author for having the audacity to speak directly about one of the greatest disasters of mankind.

@xwriter: It is highly unfair to group together feminism with those other philosophies. Feminism is a very diverse set of executions that covers the entire political spectrum from libertarian/frontier feminism, which sees less government intervention and a more independent people as the way to greater empowerment for women, to anarchist feminism and socialist feminism.

Also, to be fair, anarchy DID work in Somalia. The lot of the people has improved since their government went away. Would it "work" in America? Probably not. We don't have Africas problems to anywhere near the degree to need Anarchy, but Anarchy may be a good solution for Africa, where the corruption is so rife that it stagnates everything and government itself is little more then a source of criminal activity.

Sheila, you're confusing the historical person Marx with Marx' analyses that may well denounce himself as an exploiter. Cui bono? If I found out that you've behaved immorally before, what would that say about your article?

Physics theories were used to build the nuclear bomb. Does this prove the theories morally wrong? -- From bombs to shoes... There is a famous saying by the German sociologist Max Weber (or is it by someone else? who cares?): "You don't have to be a shoemaker to know that a shoe doesn't fit." If Marx had worked as those laborers of the proletariat which he analysed, only one thing is sure: he would never have written The Capital.

If it's your actual wish that it should not have been written, why don't you just say that instead of digging up trash from Marx' biography?

You know I never knew much about Marx, but last week I was talking to someone about a lot of these 'generic' political thinkers and "intellectuals" who sit in their rooms, away from normal people, fertilising their own thoughts and influencing generations of politicians. I quipped that Marx, for instance, probably never worked a day in his life and probably spent all his time sitting at home, a social misfit thinking about socxial engineering. I was surprised to see how accurate I was. If anything he was even worse than I thought. Thanks for posting this.

Marxism, Socialism (in all its sticky-fingered guises...) is for losers.

Winners start businesses, thereby creating money for themselves and jobs/investment opportunities for others.

Winners work hard, are dependent on themselves...

Winners stay with and support their families.

Winners contribute; they are economically productive.

      Losers are lazy.

Losers are unashamed to live off others' money -- money not freely given.

Losers -- the worst of them -- believe that they DESERVE others' money and that those with money are WRONG for having it. Their credo seems to be "What's yours is mine."

      Socialism serves losers.

      Capitalism serves winners.

Capitalism rewards hard work, intelligence, and (the resulting) success

Socialism punishes said success and rewards sloth and failure.

The sooner we defeat this defeatist Socialist disease, the better off we'll be.

      Humbly yours,

      Good Day sheila b.

You're right, the comments aren't very nice on balance. Quite a nasty sectarian debate going on there! One is tempted to say, "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?!"

I'm not going to contribute to it. Neither do I intend to take issue with your interpretation. I just stopped by to say: your argument is passionate, forceful, polemical, and I do think, somewhat ideologically biased, -- which is fine -- your article presents a fascinating psychoanalytic interpretation of the man, Marx, and the origins of Marxism.

I will not even take issue, one way or another, with your view on this. But the methodology you use, your narrative technique is impressive and an important reminder that the philosophies of great men and women of the past, some of whom we come to almost deify, contain an important element of the personality (all the strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and failures and follies)and life experiences of these people as individuals.

I just wanted to say that I appreciate good writing and good technique.

      Well done, sheila b.

That part about Marx receiving income from factories by auxiliary through Engels is interesting, do you have a source for that?

Anyways Marx certainly did work. He wrote prolifically on many subjects. He was learned in all the political economy of his day. His Capital stretches over thousands of pages. In terms of intellectual work at least (I don't know if you consider that work) he was one of the harder workers.

      PS: I'm not a Marxist.

A great article. Well researched, written, and open minded. As an American Vietnam veteran I have seen psuedo-marxism and Psuedo-Communism in the world but have never seen any politic system in praqctice that didn't have an elite class at the top pulling the strings. I am tired of uneducated people trashing fee thinking like some of the idiots who posted here. The nice thing about the US of A is that if we do not like it, we are free to try to change it. Idiots say love it or leave it. These are the ones who never did anything for their country but bitch. Love or change it is the most appropriate. Again, great open minded thinking. Way to go.

Marxism is contrary to the word and will of God. If you read the Bible, you'll see that God rewards hard work and punishes laziness. In the book of Proverbs, it says that the hand of the diligent shall prosper, but the sluggard will come to naught. In the parable of the talents, the faithful servants are rewarded for their hard work while the slothful servant is cast out. It also says if a man does not work, he shall not eat. Today we live in a communist country, where sloth is rewarded and diligence is punished, also known as the welfare state. You cannot violate God's laws forever, sooner or later our entire economy will crash and burn. It's just a matter of time. Instead of being the land of the free and the home of the brave, we have become the land of the flea and the home of the slave. God help us!

The truth is that statism, socialism, commumism, feminism, anarchism is a welfare stystem occupied by Marxist parasites who think on their toilette bowls, which they are to lazy to have invented it.

The author of this article has his information on the ball. Even Marx's mother told him: "Son, instead of writing about money, go out there and make some!". His father thought he was “possessed by a demon” (Padover 22). Karl Marx reminds me of a hippy who raids the food of a workman's fridge and blames him for not sharing the wealth. If it wasn't for capitalism, which Engels was part of, Marx and his disciples would be eating worms!

All social-oriented political philosophies, from Stalin to Hitler, are responsible for two World Wars that killed millions of people in the name of tribal collectivism and is what is destroying the US right now.

If it wasn't for capitalism, your standard of living would be like those in the Middle Ages! Statism and social goverments produce nothing, it is the industralist and businessman that do - your modern Engels. Only capitalism declares that each and every man, may live his own life for his own happiness, as an end to himself, not by permission of others, but by right, and that government's sole responsibility is to protect those rights, and never violate them, because they are inalienable. Boo to all tribal mentality and tell the hippy to get or make his own job and his own fridge! Marx is a big loser!

Marx was a nobody with idiotic ideas that were picked up by the powers-that-be to advance their agenda. Anybody who thinks communism, or socialism for that matter is a good idea has not taken into account human nature.

Of course we've never seen "real" communism. And we never will. The philosophy is basically flawed because of it's pie in the sky ideals of how people actually think and act.

      Another excellent hub sheila :)

Marx appears to be a believer in the "Lucy" (Charles Schulz) theory: "I love mankind, it's people I can't stand." He loved the workers, but never joined them in toil, he loved his family, but would not sacrifice to feed them. In general, the man was a drinker, a self-important elitist, and a lout. His philosophy to "help" mankind has created more suffering than Capitalism-- at its worse-- could not do. To create a "classless" society, you only need freedom and the ability to keep the rewards of your effort. The world of upper and lower caste system, can be ended by the effort of individuals to improve, not the heavy yoke of a state-enforced mediocrity.

I wonder why people so in love with Socialism don't pack up their crap and move to a Socialist country. I wonder how many of them are on unemployment or welfare or in some way live of of money earned by people that work and pay taxes. 'If' they work I wonder if they wouldn't mind just dumping all of their earnings into a big community pot, and have someone else decide how much everyone is alloted, wether they put any effort or productivity into their labor or not. All you half-wit dolts, show me one country that is a shinning example of socialism who's poulace wouldn't give all they had to move here. Show me ANY country that has helped out these 'wonderful socialist states' in time of need more than the U.S. . This is out country and we like it the way it is, flaws and all. "I wonder what country you're from. Do you know how many people died under the Marxist regimes of the Soviet Union and China?"

No where, in the entire world, has true communism been accomplished. The sad truth is it will most likely never be accomplished at any rate. However, what you say above is ignorant.

The Soviet Union and Communist China are not true communist states, they are hardly even socialist states. Both are dictatorships hidden under the name of Communism. Communism is not a form of government, socialism is a form of government, communism itself is an ideology which all members of society must recognize if it will ever be achieved.

The socialist state is the transition between capitalism and communism, it is called 'the dictatorship of the proletariat' in which a temporary government is put into place to protect the communist revolution and make sure the bourgeois and previous officials do not overthrow the state. Once communism has been officially reached there is no government, no classes, no one is above anyone. Everyone owns everything. People work within society for the good of humanity, not for selfish gain, the work you do will give others the things they need and in return you will get the things you need from them.

The 'Marxist' regimes throughout Europe and Asia are not what Karl Marx envisioned Communism to be turned into. Why don't you go read up on Marx's life, the Communist Manifesto, and a bit of Eric Fromm's writing on Marx.

"Close to Karl Marx's death, he stated very plainly, that he was not a Marxist. Karl Marx is rolling in his grave at the idea of Communism. His form of belief dictated that society is lead by conflict, and eventually we, as a society, will reach a point in our lives where there is no conflict and then this idea of everybody being equal, this idea of "Communism" will naturally instill it's self into our society. There will be no war fought, no revolutionary group overthrowing the government in favor of this new form--this idea of communism will be a natural result." (taken from

Get your facts straight and indulged yourself in a basic understanding of something before you make yourself look like an idiot.

The opposite of this article is true. Read e.g. Erich Fromm what he wrotes about Marx Image of man. How he loved his wife and man kind. Read Capter 23 of Volume 1 of the capital to see why and how the first factory "workers" really went into the factories!! Its written better like any crime story ! Just read his books to see how much he has worked.

His theory has infuenced (with Eastern Europe and China) over the half of mankind and with strong enthusiasm till the deathly wars of the US- and capitalist sponsored NAZIs. And Marx was right to say Socialism is for developped capitalists countries - not underdevelopped like Russia and China.

I see again and again - anything you and your people in your "world" know, is completely manipulated to the opposite. Sorry I have no time to say more and think it will not be accepeted. Pieces of truth die in a field of dirty lies. Its strange to read such an article. In my country it would be impossible to concentrate so much of dump lies in one single article.
