MICHELLE OBAMA . . .things you may not know
A shady past
Shortly after the inauguration the media began to gush about Michelle Obama. Possibly they knew so little about her they were forced to begin with her exquisite fashion sense. CBS gushed ,” . . .our next first lady, Michelle Obama, is bringing a new sense of style to the White House. Obama follows in the fashion footsteps of first ladies like Jackie Kennedy, who was known for her sophistication and elegance.”
But let’s not dwell on Mrs. Obama’s fashion sense
A few photos will suffice. We will move on to meatier stuff and some of her history and her statements. Remember when she said this. “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country.” She was on the campaign trail at the time.
To understand Obama’s career you must first understand her mentor, mover and shaker and best friend to both Michelle and Obama, Valerie Jarrett protégé of Chicago mayor Richard Daly. Valerie Jarrett has been called “the other side of Barack’s brain.” It was Jarrett who persuaded Michelle, who was not yet married to Barack, to leave her new law job for the public sector job Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development.
From then on Michelle followed Jarrett everywhere. When Jarrett became vice chair of the University of Chicago Medical Center ‘s board of trustees, Michelle was promoted to vice president for community and external affairs and her salary almost tripled. When she was on leave to help Barack campaign she was nonetheless paid. When she left this job it was never filled again as it was a make believe post, a non job.
However before she left the non job she assisted in implementing a program to dump low income patients which was called “Urban Health Initiative.” Stating that it would “dramatically improve health care for thousands of South Side residents,” Michelle was able to sell the program, which involved bussing the poor to other clinics in order to make room for those that had health insurance and could pay.
The plan more or less blew up when a young boy had his lip torn off by a dog and his mother took him to the medical center. Under Michelle’s plan the boy was given a tetanus shot and forced to take an hour-long bus ride to another hospital for surgery because he had no insurance and couldn’t pay to have his lip sewn back on.
The University of Chicago Medical Center receives tax breaks for charitable care, but during Michelle’s employment the percentage of charitable help given to the poor was so low it prompted a prominent Chicago physician to say it was, “shameful. . .They are arguably, if not defrauding, then at least taking advantage of a public subsidy.”
The American College of Emergency Physicians said they had “grave concerns that the UC policy toward emergency patients is dangerously close to patient dumping.” They blasted Mrs. Obama’s plan.
It might seem odd that Mrs. Obama spoke so compassionately about universal health care on the campaign trail and that President Obama’s health care plan was in his words to help the uninsured and the poor that cannot afford insurance. Does Obamacare require bussing of injured children because they can’t pay? Is this the Obama compassion?
Another interesting campaign subject from Michelle Obama was her constant bad mouthing of corporate America and her push for young people to embrace public service. She said, “Don’t go into corporate America. You know become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. . . . . but if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money making industry, into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.”.
Michelle Obama left college and immediately took a job with a legal firm and shortly after was employed by the University of Chicago Medical Center. Within 6 years she was making $316,000.00. While on the campaign trail she repeatedly complained about how hard it was to pay off her school loan and save for the children and all the time she continued to collect a salary from the hospital.
Despite her campaign theme to young people urging them to become community workers, in 2005 Michelle went to work for a giant corporation, TreeHouse Foods, Inc. where she engaged in on the job training to be an executive. She was forced to leave when Barack Obama was out bashing WalMart, for whom Tree House Foods Inc. is a huge supplier.
Michelle now involves herself with fighting bad food choices and encouraging healthy diets and being supportive to her husband while looking stylish. She’s not turning kids away at clinics or whining about how hard it is to make ends meet or bashing corporations or teaching children to hate America. That’s a good thing.
