Martin Luther King Canned Food Drive

Updated on June 18, 2013

Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, a day to realize that we can help those that are in need, it isn't just another day off paid by some companies, but it is a day to be able to make a difference. I have always been thankful for what I have and just being able to buy groceries whether it is a little bit or just enough for a month.

What the library did was help out the patrons with their fines and at the same time help out those families in need. They even posted it online on facebook and put it on the first page of the newspaper so people could come and donate some canned food and non-perishable food. We had some people take advantage of it by donating some food for the fines that they owed, they had a five dollar limit per account. We also had some people who just felt like donating because the saw the need to help out.

Now that is only what was done through the library, the city and many other companies were also doing something else to help do their part. A lot of times we don't realize how many people out there need help, especially in times like these where people are losing their jobs and they are not getting the money that they usually get. This is a good time to help those families get the food that they need.

Do you know what was done at your city to help those in need? Did they have any volunteer organizations on this day?
