Why Liberals are Irrational

We Cannot Teach you if you Don't Want to Learn

The sign above the entry way to my son's school reads, "We cannot teach you if you don't want to learn." It's a simple, yet profound statement underpinning the fact that there is a certain openness required to really learn; an openness that is all but absent from the leftist/liberal mindset. This is not to say that liberals are unintelligent, a point I would like to emphasize. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I have met very few truly stupid people in my life. Even the mentally impaired brain contains billions of finely tuned synapses and neuro pathways- an anatomical work of art, a masterpiece. The words "idiot, moron, stupid," etc, are overused and overplayed in our society. The problem isn't a lack of intelligence, it is rather a lack of humility. It is here, in this lack, that liberals excel.

Why are they so Arrogant?

They are arrogant, in part, because they have embraced technology and forsaken the idea of in-depth learning. Few people read books anymore. One statistic found in the techno/critical book The Shallows cites that 80% of people who do their reading on Kindle's and other tabletesque devices report a decrease in reading. The same book, written by Nicholas Carr, records the laments of Literature professors that struggle to get their students to read a single book! Welcome to the age of skimming, hence shallow learning. This phenomenon is observed when watching Ben Shapiro videos. Shapiro, a politically conservative pundit, attorney, and author, is known for his rapier wit and ingenious quick comebacks. He visits liberal campuses and gives lectures on various political hot topics. At the end there is always a Q&A period. Most of the time, well spoken, bold, liberal students approach the microphone and try to ask Shapiro the smoking-gun question that will put the young pundit in his place. It is disconcerting to watch these young adults reading questions from their phones (as seen in the video below) or pre-written lists furnished by left wing activist groups like Antifa. It is as if the students have no desire, or perhaps ability, to simply remember the questions they'd like to ask and then ask them.

A Recent Conversation with a Liberal

I’ll call him Frank. Frank and I were talking politics at work, something most of us should avoid like the plague, when, of course, an argument broke out. I’ve learned not to engage Frank a couple of years ago when I first heard him say, “I’m personally against abortion, but I believe in other people’s right to it.” I asked him, “What is the difference, as far as the fetus is concerned, between your position on abortion and that of a pro-choice person?” His lack of an answer was his answer.

This day’s conversation wasn’t about abortion, rather it was about the construction of a wall on our nation’s southern border. He called it “racist.” He said it was unnecessary and that there was no need for it. I pointed out that, according to one statistic from the media outlet,WND, 4,380 Americans are killed annually by illegal aliens. He responded by saying, “so?”

”Well, what if one of those Americans that were murdered was one of your children? Wouldn’t a wall have prevented it?”

He responded, “whether it was an illegal immigrant or someone down the street that did the killing what difference would it make? Dead is dead.”

It didn’t occur to Frank that the illegal immigrant shouldn‘t be here to steal, drive drunk, or murder in the first place. In his thinking an illegal immigrant has every bit as much right to be here in our community as anyone else. How does one argue against that brand of ignorance? I didn’t. I was dumbfounded unable to believe the level of cluelessness with which I was dealing. Frank is no dummy. He holds a master’s degree. Like me, he’s also a veteran. What is Frank’s main problem? He gets his information from his phone-exclusively. I often see him in the halls scrolling away so certain, so confident that his skimming and scanning twitter feeds and left wing media outlets are keeping him well informed. Frank is good at his job, intelligent and reliable. But when it comes to understanding real life issues he is stuck in the shallows.

Ah well, we are all on our own courses, aren’t we? Narrow trajectories all traced out. There is no better chance of me converting to a liberal mindset than there is of him coming over to my side, to the conservative side. Theres is one difference. My side makes sense.

I guess the sign in my son’s school is not only correct, but universal in it’s application. “We cannot teach you if you don’t want to learn.” How true.

We cannot teach you if you don’t want to learn.

Thank you AB- You're exactly right- he and so many people of his generation think that scanning a quick article makes them an authority on any given subject. I think one of the benefits of getting older is obtaining something they don't have access to- perspective. Thanks again, always great hearing from you.

Amen to that! I was a Cruz supporter too, but now I see that what we needed wasn't a Cruz but a Trump :)

Hi Leland, I now have an image of your co-worker, frantically scanning his phone in order to try and keep up with you. The biggest problem with the ‘Franks’ of this world, is that they do not know what they believe at their core, a firm foundation was never established in their lives and it matters not the Degrees, when there is no substance.

      Good read, thanks!

I wasn't a fan of Trump either until I saw the results. I initially backed Ted Cruz. God's ways are higher than our ways though, and He put the right man in charge!

Vivian- that’s an excellent point. Even though they are complicit in their blindness Satan has blinded them. Part of seeing the truth has to come from having the humility to say “I was wrong.” There’s really no shame in that. I admit that prior to Trump being elected, I didn’t like him. Now I think he’s fantastic because of how I’ve seen him stand up to our enemies within and without. Thank you for reading and commenting my friend.

Great article, Leland! I love Ben Shapiro! I would add 2 Corinthians 4:3-4. The devil blinds people from seeing the truth. There is no other way to explain how people can't see what is right in front of them and so obvious. It is spiritual blindness. You are right though that nothing you say will sway them because their minds are set.
