World Cup 2022

The FIFA president Seth Blatter is being asked by gay rights activists, to apologize for a remark he made at a press conference. When asked about the treatment of gay fans, at the finals in Qatar, he said: “I would say they should refrain from any sexual activity”.

What is there to apologize for? Homosexual activity is illegal in Qatar. He could just as easily say: People should refrain from vandalism or any other illegal activity. He didn’t because he was directly asked about gays.

By asking people to refrain from breaking any laws, he is doing exactly what he should be doing. As responsible people, we should always abide by the laws of any country we visit, for whatever reason. He did not pick out any particular set of people, the person asking the question did.

As a smoker, nobody stops me from entering a non-smoking restaurant and nobody objects, as long as I do not smoke in there. It does not say “Gay” on your passport, so no one will stop you entering, just do not break any of THEIR laws whilst you are there.

You may say you are entitled to rights in the privacy of your own hotel room. This may be true to a certain extent. If, in your country it is illegal to take drugs, can you take drugs in your own house? You could, with less chance of detection than outside, but it is still illegal and if the authorities believe you are breaking the law, they may bust in and arrest you. Why should any other country be different?

If gays ask for any law to be waivered for them, then they are not seeking equal rights, they are seeking special treatment and that would be prejudice to heterosexuals, who have to abide by all laws.

Seth Blatter should not apologize and he should continue to encourage fans throughout the World, to be law abiding. If you wish to support your team abroad, then follow the laws of that country. Remember you are just a guest. If you cannot abide by the laws, then be prepared to stand up and take your flogging.

I think you are right. Approval cannot be mandated. Most want to be mainstream, not a minority. However, some will do anything just to get attention.

The problem is that some groups want more than just equal rights. They want approval. I am not usre that can be mandated.
