Racial Equality in School Discipline

Updated on January 13, 2014

Buzzy, the Proverbial Fly on the Wall

New Racist Rules

Good morning Breakfastpoppers. Today is Monday, January 13, 2014. Our friend Buzzy, the Proverbial Fly on the Wall, has some news he would like to share with us. The Departments of Justice and Education have released a memo that tells the public schools in your nation the correct and approved method of dealing with disruptive students. Personally, this fly thinks both departments are in desperate need of re-education.

In their dubious wisdom, the memo states that it is a violation of federal law for your nation's schools to punish certain races more than others even if certain races break the rules more than other races. By now, you must all be scratching your collection heads in complete disbelief. Let me phrase this another way. The DOJ and the DOE believe that equal numbers of black students and white students should be punished for breaking a rule even though more black students broke the rule than white students. Feel free to scratch your collective heads once again, because this psycho policy still doesn't make any sense explaining it a second time around.

New Math is in Vogue

Discipline by the Numbers

Let's review this new policy with a math problem.Thirteen students arrive at school dressed in bathing suits, thereby violating the dress code. Ten of the students are black and three are white. The school must punish six students in total because keeping the numbers equal between the races is required. Extending this insane policy even further, we can surmise that if Asian students never act up, it may be necessary to punish a few anyway just to keep things fair. If anyone ever had any doubt that the inmates were running the asylum, your doubts should now be put to rest.

If the DOJ and the DOE intended to make sure that minority students were not being treated unfairly, they completely missed the boat writing this policy. What it does accomplish in a big way is giving a complete pass to disruptive students if they outnumber another race.

Handcuff the Offenders

The Solution

I have spent a good deal of time as a fly on the wall in many a classroom. I have also spent a good deal of time on the walls of the DOJ and the DOE. In my humble opinion both departments need to be put in cuffs and sent away. Let common sense prevail when it comes to discipline in the schools. If a student breaks a rule set forth by the school then let the punishment fit the crime. If the offending student is black, so be it. If the student is white then he or she is white. The color of the skin is irrelevant. It would also behoove the schools to use common sense when deciding what is a crime and what is not. If a kindergarten student eats a salami sandwich and it ends up looking like a gun, it is completely inappropriate to send the child home and suspend him or her. In this case, I recommend suspending the school official who spotted the gun made out of salami.

Let's get back to educating the kids. Is that too much to ask for?

Fly me to the moon

And let me know right from wrong

Let me know what life is like

When big government is gone!

      Dear Joyette,

First I must apologize for not answering your comment. I never received notification that you wrote. This hub is about insane application of rules in the schools. I agree with you completely, I thought we had reached a time in our history when all races were being treated fairly. Things have taken a turn for the worse despite the fact that we have a black president and so many other people of color in positions of power. Too many people are seeking to divide us as a nation and that is sad and unforgivable.

Is this about racism or unfair rules governing discipline at schools? I am not quite sure. Certainly, I do not think that anyone should be victimized for the color of his/her skin. In these times of enlightenment we should all be mature enough to respect each other's rights as human beings all created in the image and likeness of God whether a person is black as tar or white as snow.

      Dear ologsinquito,

I haven't seen too many examples of common sense prevailing in the schools or in government. Nothing good can come of this.

It seems as if this might be an over-reaction to the crazy zero tolerance policies. I agree that common sense should always prevail in school discipline, and I have also seen cases where it hasn't.

      Dear teaches,

How right you are. The children will be dumbed down into perfect voters. See you at the Inn!

The DOE is taking strides to conform our children to the new social order. Nuff said.

      Dear ps,

I doubt a person of your talent and character could withstand the insanity now raging through our schools. When a 6 old is punished for kissing a girl on her hand and labelled a sex offender you know for sure that the inmates are ruling the asylum. Join me at our "virtual" Inn. We meet there in our minds at the end of the day to chase away the madness of our world.

O, my. It does not make ANY sense. I taught school for 40 years and was baffled by some of the discipline measures. Thankfully I am no longer there and do not have to be responsible for carrying out insane policies.

One thing I always practiced and stated to the kids in our classroom: I am always fair. FAIR. If you break a rule, you will be punished whether girl boy or if you are blue or green.

This policy you have mentioned is one more bit of craziness that more or less allows poor behavior by whatever group of children. I will never figure out 'what were they thinking:????

      Dear Levertis,

Common sense dictates that the guilty should be dealt with in appropriate ways. Keeping the numbers equal between the races makes an ugly game out of knowing right from wrong. Please come to our virtual Inn tonight. It may exist only in our minds but we will be in good company!

This is really not new. When I was in school lots of decades ago, a teacher who left the classroom and came back to discover a disruptive class did not ask questions. Everyone was guilty and every one got five raps with a belt. Of course that was unfair. The teacher should not have left the children without supervision. Chastisement or punishment should be for those who break the rules regardless of races. If a student jumps up and begins shooting a few students, I would hate for one of my

      Good Morning Carol,

It is definitely racial t-shirt profiling. To even mention the color of the t-shirt is awful. What's worse is that brains are in very short supply. See you at the Inn. It exists only on our minds but it is a great place to be.

I didn't hear about the salami samwich but I did hear about the Pop Tart shaped like a gun while the kid was eating. To be shot with strawberry filling is unconscionable, especially if wearing white. I wouldn't mind so much if wearing black - or is this racial profiling of a t-shirt?

      Yours truly,

      Good Morning Hxprof,

Anyone coming to the conclusion that this is a discrimination issue should be punished for being stupid! When issues like this come up I feel that we have no future at all in this nation. Dumb is in, I guess. See you at the Inn.

      Good Morning FitnezzJim,

You're right, it won't be long before the students who would normally behave decide it's time to join the fun. Eric Holder and Duncan should be removed from their positions. The Inn isn't open yet but I am going to break in. See you later.

I saw an article in a Tampa newspaper several years ago that commented on this same subject. The problem in local schools was that boys were acting up far more often than girls and blacks (particularly boys) were acting up more often than white boys. Consequently, black boys were being punished "in disproportionate numbers" compared to girls and white boys. Thus, the school board felt there was a discrimination issue, and was setting up some public meeting to discuss it. Just reading about this made me laugh.

I'm laughing now too....but I'm hiding some disgust.

Well now, imagine only two students of different races. One always misbehaves, the other does not. How long will it be before the other misbehaves too, just to get even. After all, he was already being punished for behaving. Welcome to the new American way.

      Dear savvydating,

It really isn't off topic. All this garbage is proof of a nation that has lost its way on both a national and small scale. We really don't have freedom of speech anymore and commonsense and fair play are dead and buried. See you at the Inn.

      Dear suzettenaples,

This is really just another attempt to have government take over the school system throughout the nation. Common Core is the most obvious attempt at this takeover and it is frightening.

Say what, Buzzy? Just when you think things cannot get any more absurd--they do! I suppose the DOJ and DOE have to make the statistics look good, never mind that any given race on any given day will know that at least some of them will get a free pass for acting like idiots.

I don't mean to sway too far from the subject, but I am beginning to wonder whether that same rule applies here on Hubpages. For example, I've read some really vile hate speech from certain groups whose words go unchallenged, for the most part, but when the other group defends themselves or disagrees, then they get banned. Consequently, the groups who do not believe in global warming or who defend Christ feel as if their speech is being repressed... because it is. On the other hand, it may be that those other groups just complain a whole lot more, while the one's who defend themselves are too polite to complain. So then it seems as if Hubpages bans the non-offender without bothering to read their comments to determine whether or not the comment was offensive in the first place. Anyway, that's how these kids are going to feel. They will witness the injustice and they will become disillusioned, then angry, then apathetic.

Sorry I went off on a tangent a little. Thanks for keeping us updated, Buzzy. Up & useful... as always.

I just found several news articles about this and you are right this is ridiculous. When I was a teacher I had to discipline students; not black students, not white students, not Hispanic students, I just disciplined students. I really think these 'suggestions' from DOJ and DOE are more attempts at dismantling our public education system. How sad!

      Good Morning Old Poolman,

I see you have totally mastered the new math. I am surprised Holder didn't propose suspending 2 white students for every black student breaking the rules. Even better, punish the white students for the crimes of the black students to make up for past injustices. See you at the Inn. I need a drink!

      Good Morning Pino,

I see you have mastered the new math quite well. The DOJ has many new mathematical concepts in play. How about the problem that states, "how many baseball bat carrying New Black Panthers does it take to scare voters away from the polls." The correct answer, in my book, is one. The DOJ says there is no such number at all! See you at the Inn. Would you mind if I took a quick dip in the glass?

I would think this decision would be great study material for students of psychiatry. It would be interesting to know what they had to say about those who dreamed up such an unfair system

This system could be carried forward into our court system in the future. If your black neighbor robs a bank, they may also arrest you if you are white and send you to prison just to be fair. This is pretty similar to what they are doing in the school system.

POP: This IS the new math. If I was the mother of one of the 10 black swimsuit wearing student who got punished, I would be screaming holy hell because my child was singled out! That statement is just as insane as only punishing one. if 10 black students out of 13 equals 77% of the students disobeying the rules, then only 77% of the white students should be punished. That is the same logic. I now have disputed this new federal law in two different ways. I'm with you, Buzzy; if someone breaks the rules, then he/she must be punished. It doesn't matter if you are white, black, yellow, purple (as in Scotty) , orange or green. Our country needs to apply laws/rules evenly. Then the school systems will be able to control the disruptive students and get back to teaching. Of course that is another subject all togther. I'm off to the bar. I'll have a wine glass waiting for you to land on, Buzzy. Save me a seat....

Buzzy, the DOJ and DOE learned nothing from Dr. King. He wanted his children to be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. The DOJ and DOE need to go back to school, and they should be made to read Dr. King's great speech over and over. There should be some buzz at the inn tonight.
