Stupid Things Republicans Have Said

Updated on July 30, 2020

I'm an eclectic gal with many diverse interests. They include relationships, film, trivia, and an assortment of other things.

The purpose of this article is to be intentionally inflammatory.

Are Republicans any more stupid than Democrats? Whether they are more stupid or aren't, generating stupid quotes won't prove very much as there are as many stupid quotes from Democrats out there as stupid quotes from Republicans. However, it's still fun to gather a bunch of stupid quotes in one place and characterize an entire group of people with them.

Remember, it's all in good fun.

"Put the white back in the White House" - t-shirt worn by attendee at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

"A lot of people like being in abusive relationships." - State Rep. Mark Warden (R - New Hampshire) (February 2013)

"If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." - Representative Todd Akin, Republican Senate nominee from Missouri. (August 2012)

"And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen." - Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock (October 2012)

"You would be giving off more CO2 if you are riding a bike than driving a car." - Washington State Republican Representative Ed Orcutt (March 2013)

"So brace yourself, Mr. Obama may declare this week that homosexual marriage is a constitutional right. Is he the Antichrist who changes times and law? Only time will tell.” - Rick Wiles, host of the radio show "End Times". (March 2013)

"Deficits don't matter." - Vice President Dick Cheney (December 2002)

“What I’m saying is if my family was in the crosshairs of gangs that were roaming around neighborhoods in New Orleans or or any other location, the deterrent effect of an AR-15 to protect my family, I think, is greater than a double-barrel shotgun.” - South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsay Graham (March 2013)

"Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.” - from America: Land I Love (8th grade Louisiana history textbook, 2013)

"Women don't care about contraception." - Republican governor from South Carolina, Nikki Haley (2012)

“It’s a form of argument that I thought you would have known, which is called the ‘reduction to the absurd.... If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?” - Antonin Scalia (Dec. 2012)

"I think she's most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president, tell you the truth." - John McCain (referring to Sarah Palin in 2008)

“Apparently this Keynsian [sic] thing doesn’t really work on the micro level." - columnist reporting that Paul Krugman had filed for bankruptcy based on an article published by a satirical web site. (March 2013)

"What this court case said was, “young people have the right to engage in sex outside of marriage.” Society never gave young people that right. Functioning societies don’t do that. They stop it. They punish it. They corral people. They shame them. They do whatever. The institution for the expression of sexuality is marriage and all societies always shepherded young people there, what the Supreme Court said was forget that shepherding, you can’t block that, that’s not to be done.” - Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council (commenting on a 41-year-old Supreme Court ruling giving unmarried people the right to contraception, March 2013)

“I hope you get raped and your throat slit! Maybe then you understand why white women need to be armed.” - Tweet by an Anonymous Fox viewer responding to Democratic strategist Zerlina Maxwell's appearance on a program discussing her article "5 Ways We Can Teach Men Not to Rape" in which she argued that whether or not she should have a gun is irrelevant to the conversation because the onus should not be on the woman to defend herself (March 2013)

“I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.” - Scott Terry, audience member at the CPAC Conference in Maryland (March 2013)

"I used to think women just shouldn't be able to vote. Now I think at least liberal women should not be able to hold office." - Ann Coulter on Fox News' Hannity (March 2013)

"I'm not gay, so I'm not going to marry one." - Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), commenting on why he won't support same-sex marriage (March 2013)

"My father had a ranch. We used to have fifty to sixty wetbacks to pick tomatoes." - Congressman Don Young (R-ALASKA) (March 2013)

''I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter. I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence.'' - Rep. Michele Bachmann , on the 1976 Swine Flu outbreak that happened when Gerald Ford was president. (April 28, 2009)

''The only way to reduce the number of nuclear weapons is to use them. '' - Rush Limbaugh

''I'm a huge supporter of women. What I'm not is a supporter of liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose. Feminism has led women astray. I love the women's movement -- especially when walking behind it.'' - Rush Limbaugh, responding to criticism that he is sexist and defending his selection as one of the judges at the 2010 Miss America Pageant, 'Fox News' Fox & Friends,' February 3, 2010

I'll continue to add to this article as I find additional stupid Republican quotes, but I strongly urge readers to add their own and I will include them provided they have a source that I can verify.

With the recent issues in Ferguson and New York, one great Republican quote I've heard is something along the lines of: "If black people don't like getting shot, maybe they ought to get out of the line of fire."

    Thanks for your input!

How about Romney's little jewel, when he was asked how he would address Immigration he responded ,“The answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can’t find work here because they don't have legal documentation to allow them to work here,”

I would have to agree. I cringe every time I hear one from them. I almost think guys like Ted Cruz are pretending to be Republicans to give the party a bad name. Like it is a setup.

    Those are great! Very funny.

But is it just me or does it seem like the Republicans tends to make stupid quotes and sound really mean at the same time? I think if the Republicans just stopped talking about rape, women's rights, and homosexuality, they'd eliminate like 90% of their stupid quotes.

Funny! Here are some if you would like to write about democrat quotes:

Al Gore: ""During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Bill Clinton: ""African Americans watch the same news at night that ordinary Americans do."

Joe Biden: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened."

Michael Moore: "There is no terrorist threat. Yes, there have been horrific acts of terrorism and, yes, there will be acts of terrorism again. But that doesn't mean that there's some kind of massive terrorist threat."

Marion Barry: "If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very very low crime rate."

Nancy Pelosi: "every month that we do not have an economic recovery package 500 million Americans lose their jobs."

And my personal favorite...Bill Clinton:"It all depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is' is."

Ignorance of individuals aside, the fact that one of those quotes came from a textbook is highly disturbing. YIKES!!
