Racism Against African Americans On The Rise Again.
In the last few years , according to statistics, racism as well as hate crimes against African Americans has been increasing throughout the United States since 2009. A hate crime is a criminal act in which a person chooses the victim based on the victim's race, religion, place of national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or gender. This hub will focus on race, but the next hub will focus on disability.
What is interesting, is that a large majority of people deny they are racist. Dr. David J. Leonard has written many articles on racism. In one of those articles a number of White Americans about what they believed about racism. Here are some of the results of his questions.
Question: Why are there racial inequalities?
Answer: Racial inequalities would "disappear" if only Blacks would "try harder" this answer was chosen by 65% of the people who were given this question.
Question: Picture a drug user in your head.
Answer: A Black man. This answer was written by 95% of all the White people in this test!
In reality the numbers are completely different. Also, African Americans are much more likely to go to jail for committing the same crime as a White American.
The United States Still has groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Skin Heads, and since Barack Obama became President, the number of groups like these has risen. In 2008 there were 148 White Supremacy groups in the United States, in 2011 those numbers had risen to 1,274. How much hate do we have in this world?
Another question is, who is being racist now? Why are the Republicans trying to change the voting times in urban areas mostly inhabited by African Americans? Doug Preisse, Republican Party Chairman of Franklin County, which is in the State Capital Columbus, Ohio. The comment he made was in the Columbus Dispatch " I guess I really, actually feel we shouldn't contort the voting to the urban -Read African American-voter turn out machine". Does he think African Americans cannot read?
When it comes to racism, it seems to be alive and well, and on the rise. That is bad, really bad.
