We Need to Reread Our Bibles to Learn About Biblical Marriage
Conservatives, Reaffirm Your Faith With Lessons From the Bible!
The United States Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, has overturned the Defense of Marriage Act and asserted that no state can deny the marriage of a same-sex couple. As expected, the nation has exploded in a paroxysm of punditry. Many applaud the ruling, while many others are appalled. Locally, one of my county's own Justices of the Peace is threatening to resign over the issue. Social media has turned into a vociferous battleground.
Many conservatives, including the four dissenting Supreme Court Justices themselves, have proclaimed that no Court should have the power of a lawmaking body. For millenia, they argue, mankind has determined its own definition of marriage. The Christian Bible has been cited by countless critics of the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, with pundits claiming that religious freedom is now at risk. Justices like Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia argue that religious Americans are now a minority at risk of oppression.
For those who look to the Bible as your guiding text, allowing you to follow in the path of Jesus Christ, take heart! Look unto those powerful versus that guide mankind to be just, righteous, and pure.
Look to Ephesians 6:5 and Titus 2:9, which instruct slaves to obey their masters. How dare the federal government, after trampling Southern states' rights for four years in a brutal war, take it upon itself to erase a way of life that had existed since antiquity! Just like traditional marriage, the institution of slavery has existed across the globe for thousands of years, spanning from ancient Egypt to the Roman Empire to sub-Saharan Africa.
Look to Daniel 2:43, Deuteronomy 7:3-4, Nehemiah 13:23-30, Leviticus 19:19, and many others that forbid interracial marriage. How dare the Supreme Court, in Loving v. Virginia (1967), go against the Biblical instructions on marriage, which had stood for thousands of years! The Equal Protection Clause, created by the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, is unacceptable because the Fourteenth Amendment was only ratified by Southern states under duress. The Amendment was only adopted after Southern states felt improper post-war federal pressure...meaning citizens had no real say!
Now let us look to even more inspirational Biblical passages on marriage itself, which will renew our faith in this historic institution. Here, the Lord obviously wished us to have plenty of options: Concubines, forced marriages, child brides, etc. The Courts, in their haughtiness, have deigned to uphold silly ideas like excessively high "ages of consent" (Eighteen? Really?!) and no-fault divorces. And the concept of marital rape? Where was that in the Bible?
As we can clearly see, the U.S. Supreme Court has had absolutely no qualms about trampling on religious freedom. Every true Christian is obligated to rally and support their traditional beliefs. I expect every good Republican who is currently running for president to stand proudly and champion the wisdom spoken in the Bible, from Ephesians 6:5 to Leviticus 19:19 to Colossians 3:18. Oh, and Leviticus 21:13, which states that only women who are virgins may be married...I wonder how the Palin family feels about that one?
Only the foulest of hypocrites would ignore these passages of Biblical wisdom while attempting to stand against the recent Supreme Court decision. Let us expose the faux religious in our midst and root out the weak of faith! It is time to reclaim our Constitutional guarantee of religious freedom! We must vote out of office any legislator or executive who ignores the above Biblical passages and refuses to protest their curtailment by the Courts and the legislatures.
