THE GIRLS GUIDE TO AIR FORCE BASIC TRAINING: 4 ways to stay awake during training class

Updated on March 28, 2012

STAY ALERT TACTICS

You're sleep deprived and mentally exhausted, the last thing you want to do is sit in a hot classroom and learn about military customs and courtesies. You find yourself wondering - "Is it getting hotter in here? Did they feed you turkey at lunch on purpose?"

You're trying to fight the urge to fall asleep, but you can't and end up nodding off. 15 seconds later you find yourself in the middle of a FULL BLOWN ass-chewing because your head is bobbing and a tidbit of drool has escaped from the side of your mouth.

So how do you avoid this common dilemma during basic training? Here are some easy tactics to keep you awake:

1. LIFT YOUR FEET ONE INCH OFF OF THE FLOOR
WHY THIS WORKS: This small movement will cause your core to contract as you try to balance yourself discreetly. WARNING: this is a small and discreet movement. If a TI (training instructor) sees you purposely doing this, you will get yelled at for not paying attention in class.

2. BECOME THE SLEEP MONITOR
WHY THIS WORKS: By occupying yourself through discreetly staring at others and keeping a mental roster of sleepers, your mind won't drift off to sleep. It's a small game you can play with yourself. WARNING: do not look behind you, make 'ah-ha' facial gestures or look like you're not paying attention. This will generate unwanted attention for yourself.

3.SNIFF YOUR HAND SANITIZER
WHY THIS WORKS: Lucky for you, Purel hand sanitizer is everywhere at Lackland. When you put your hands near your nose and deeply inhale, the alcohol in the sanitizer will give you an instant rush. WARNING: This is so effective that you will potentially be recycled if caught by a TI. Major discretion is advised with this super-secret tactic.

4. STAND UP IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM
WHY THIS WORKS: It's easier to stay away while standing, plus your movement generated a rush of adrenaline because you stood up while the instructor was speaking. WARNING: you want to blend in as much as possible. Anytime you are in the limelight - it tends to backfire later.
