Trump's Deep State Part 1a

I have struggled to understand how people can follow a president who continually, almost incessantly lies and has no plan on how to govern.

I find myself back at the beginning.

I started writing blogs using HubPages. I thought I could do better.

I paid big bucks for WordPress sites and plans but now I just have two sites with 'Personal' (cheapest) plans. It is hard to make money with those.

I have two Blogger sites. These also are hard to make money.

I am going totry to clean up my act and not focus on politics in my blog ' I spend way too much time writing on trump and republicans.

But one last hurrah - because it ties in with two earlier posts on

Several times I have written that I could not figure out how trump loyalists can support him.

This will be the trifecta and the final post before the downfall of America. Although I do maintain the right to comment on the dire day as it gets closer.

I have to find a real part-time job to supplement our meager Social Security income.

This post is based on an article in 'Psychology Today' dated 12/12/2018 by Bobby Azarian, Ph.D. Dr. Azarian is the author of "Mind in the Machine".

Currenty Hypothesis

My current hypothesis is that trump will dismember the Federal Government. We are on day 27 of the SHUTDOWN with no glimmer of a light at the end of the tunnel.

The reason republicans have been so loyal to him (READ: NOT DOING THEIR CONSTITUTIONALLY APPOINTED DUTIES) is that they will grab up the best parts of what is discarded and PRIVATIZE them and so profit immensely.

The major Senate players: McConnell, Graham, Rubio made their trips to Russia and were rewarded with major contributions to their reelection coffers.

But I'd better get back to Dr. Azarian.

The Case for Trump's Deep State

My first post in this series I explained my use of 'Deep State' to describe trump's deep hold on the republicans and his supporters. The term deep state is usually used to describe his opposition but I believe his stranglehold is best described as a Deep State.

Dr. Azarian lays out that while most politicians lie, none does it in the magnitude or frequency of trump.

Dr. Azarian has drawn some of his conclusions from a 2017 review paper published in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology by the psychologist and UC Santa Cruz professor Thomas Pettigrew.

He also credits posts in publications Psychology Today which were inspired by insights from psychologist Sheldon Solomon (who laid the groundwork for the influential "Terror Management Theory" and David Dunning who did the same for the Dunning-Kruger effect.

But the real reasons that trump (tRump, Drumpf and many other appellations from his myriad detractors) appears to be invincible with his base:

1. Practicality Trumps Morality (pun intended):

For rich people, trump gives tax cuts and they follow him anywhere even to the detriment of the environment in which they have to live.

2. The Brain's Attention System is more Strongly Engaged by Trump:

A study in the Washington Post "Participants watched 40 minutes of political ads."

Hillary Clinton held their attention for only so long.

Trump held their attention and emotional arousal high throughout the session. EVEN when participants didn't agree with his statements.

3. America's Obsession with Entertainment Celebrities:

Trump supporters are addicted to entertainment and so-called reality TV. Some of his supporters even FORGIVE what he says. They seem to be happy "as long as they are entertained."

4. "Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn":

Some of his supporters are probably too rebellious and just love chaos. They seek to trounce the establishment even with fire when necessary. Dr. Azarian labels this Schadenfreude.

5. The Fear Factor: Conservative are More Sensitive to Threats:

This is a BIGGIE.

"Science has shown that the conservative brain has an exaggerated fear response when faced with stimuli that may be perceived as threatening."

A free copy of the study is available at the link.

In the Journal "Science" a study found "that conservatives have a stronger physiological reaction to startling noises and graphic images compared to liberals."

A brain imaging study published in "Current Biology" revealed that those who lean right politically tend to have a larger amygdala - a structure that is electrically active during states of fear and anxiety.

A 2014 MRI study found that it is possible to predict whether someone is liberal or conservative simply by looking at their brain activity as they view threatening or disgusting images, such as mutilated bodies.

"Specifically, the brains of self-identified conservatives generated more activity overall in response to disturbing images."

"Fear keeps his followers energize and focused on safety."

6. The Power of Mortality Reminders and Perceived Existential Threat:

A part of the "Terror Management Theory" explains Trump's fear mongering. "Humans have a unique awareness of their own mortality. The inevitability of one's death creates existential terror and anxiety."

To manage these fears human follow religions, political ideologies etc that "act as a buffer instilling life with meaning and value."

(Existential: concerned with existence; affirming the existence of a thing. Google)

Fear mongering reminds people of their own mortality and "they will more strongly defend those who share identities against those who do not share the same."

Death reminders "may influence voting habits in favor of more conservative presidential candidates (in favor of George W. Bush) in this study.

Trump's constant emphasizing of threats may be making brains respond "positively rather than negatively to bigoted statements and divisive rhetoric."

7. The Dunning-Kruger Effect: Humans often Overestimate Their Political Expertise:

Some who support trump are under- or uneducated or misinformed about issues. These people "just take trump's word" for his lies.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect "explains that the problem isn't that they are misinformed: it's that they are completely unaware they are misinformed."!

8. Relative Deprivation - A Misguided Sense of Entitlement:

This is the topic of several of my blog posts on '".

"Relative deprivation refers to the experience of being deprived of something" to which you believe you are entitled to.

"It is the discontent felt when you compare your position in life to others" who you feel are unequal or inferior. But these people have had more success than you.

This is common in "swing states like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania".

These feelings can be economic, racial, immigrant-based. These feeling ignore the fact YOU are not keeping pace with the 'accelerating' pace of inflation.

9. Lack of Exposure to Dissimilar Others:

"Racial and Ethnic isolation of Whites at the zip-code level is one of the strongest predictors of trump support."

10. Trump's Conspiracy Theories Target the Mentally Vulnerable:

They may appear to be just odd quirks in modern society but the followers of crackpot allies of trump like "Alex Jones and the shadowy QAnon" some may have a psychological illness like paranoia, delusions like schizophrenia, or at least they are vulnerable to them.

The link between schizotypy and belief in conspiracy theories is well-established.

A study in the Journal "Psychiatry Research" shows that this condition is still very prevalent in the population.

Others things this personality type may believe in magical thinking, the government created the AIDS epidemic etc.

Trump and his media allies "target these people directly".

You can "visit the alt-right websites and discussion boards to see the evidence of such manipulation".

There are six additional topics ranging from trump tapping into the nation's narcissism to understanding the racist brain.

I will follow this post shortly with a discussion of these additional topics since they are such an important part of how trump manipulates his 'jockstraps'.

I hope that you will join me for the next segment.

Thanks for stopping.
