Taken: Human Trafficking: The Reality Behind the Movie

Updated on March 10, 2012

This Trailer is Just an Advertisement for A Movie

Real Life

I went over to the neighbor's house today. The Postal worker accidentally put her mail in my box. I was in a hurry, had to go watch my Granddaughter. She will be two next month. My daughter's best friend was in labor, and she was going to be there for the birth. I was in a hurry. I had to go get cat food and gas and I was already running late. She called me at 9:45 and asked me to be there between 10:00 and 10:30. I said "do you know it's a quarter to already?" I still had to pick up another friend of hers!

What I saw at my neighbor's stopped me in my tracks. She was having a yard sale, which is not allowed where we live. I didn't want to educate her on the rules. I told her I'd been here writing and she got so excited and said, "Here, maybe you can help." She handed me a flier, I gave it a glance...

As my anxiety grew over what I was reading she told me "I got this at church, and we are trying to do something about it. Maybe you can write something about it. Did you know this was going on?"

No I didn't...

  • Statistics about Modern Slavery
  • 27 million people are enslaved world wide
  • 80% of the victims are women and children
  • Every 30 seconds, another person becomes a victim of slavery
  • Florida (where we live) is No. 2 in the Nation for reported cases of Human Trafficking.
  • 99% are not rescued... yet

Reality

I watched this as I was baby-sitting today

More Reality

Liam Neeson is not going to go and get them. That was a great movie but there is no military task force going after them either.

Why does this happen? In this day and age? I know about sweat shops. This is not about sweat shops although that plays a roll.

Children are very popular as workers, but more popular as prostitutes.

The starting age for child prostitution is four years old.

I digest this information as my granddaughter is playing with her toys, and dancing, jumping, talking. She will be two on Easter.

A new little girl was born today, she was two weeks late and weighed 9 pounds. Maybe she didn't want to come out, into this world where we can argue so long about whether or not to help, that when we make a decision it is too late for so many.

Man on the Moon?

Space station out there somewhere that I have never seen.

Children forced into prostitution. somehow I don't have much to say tonight.

Thank you for reading, Dawn. I wrote about this because people need to be aware of it. Hollywood movies barely touch on the subject. There are women and children enslaved in our very own neighborhoods. What may appear to some as a call girl may in fact be a slave, as you well know. Even women who have multiple children may be enslaved to the man who is their husband. No one knows these things, sometimes the victim does not even know they are a victim, until the truth is pointed out.

      Thank you for contacting me.

It just floors me that this crap is happening.

This is the second hub in a row that I have read on the subject.

You are special for writing about it.

I have posted the hub on my blog and hopefully I can help with some extra traffic.

The link to my blog can be found near the bottom of my profile page.

Most people would prefer to close their minds to situations like this - until it happens to them. Good luck with your hubs my dear :)

Thank you. This was not my reason for coming to HubPages, but now I have no other option but to write and keep writing. As I finished my third on the subject, I had the news on, and some teenagers had become a victim of sex crimes in my town. Guess I have to keep going, no matter how difficult it is to write about.

Thank you Mrvoodoo.Your input is always flavored with wisdom, and much appreciated.

I know it will not go away, prevention is the key. To prevent we must educate everyone. I watched the news last night. For each one that is caught two more rise up it seems. I must go write another, a good news one this time.

It's unfortunate that such things exist only because appetites for such things exist. Is it the East European Gangsters etc. who are to blame, or the wealthy citizens of opulent Western countries who hunger for such things?

Taken was a shocking movie, and I suspect the reality of this situation is much much worse for those involved. However, such things have been going on in one form or another since the dawn of man, but of course that doesn't make it right, and my best wishes go out to all caught up in such nightmares.

      Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Chuck, got your e-mail. No, I will not personally snatch people away from their captors. Thanks for the warning! I am no superhero, wish I was. I will however continue to pread the word. We are far to advanced to sit idly by while this goes on in our back yards.

Yes we are aware and we don't want to see. I am trying to make people see anyway. Some will not, I can only try, some, like you, will see.

I think most are aware of the problem but don't want to see or are afraid to see. I am also in Florida and remember a time when young girls were being taken from the public restrooms at our local mall. It made me very protective of my daughter when it came to going places alone or with her young friends.

Oh I forgot to say that Dale had a thread open a while back asking for hubs to promote, I submitted mine and another on the same topic (human trafficking and slavery). You may want to have a look for the thread and ask him to add your link too! He was very very happy to promote these awareness hubs so I expect he would love to include yours. Lets get the word out!

I have written a hub on human trafficking and slavery too. It is such a huge issue, perhaps we could swap links and place the others on our hubs? Email me and let me know when you get this! Perhaps by linking we can reach a larger audience!

I wouldn't have noticed this if you hadn't posted in the forum, so well done!

How about another hub now with some more details? Where is it happening? OK I know roughly. Police have broken up criminal gangs smuggling Eastern European girls into the UK and using them as prostitutes against their will. I'd be interested to know more about other incidences world-wide, especially where children are involved.

Faybe, this is an important article; let's hope it rockets to #1 for Google Search and stays there. My wife and I have long been aware of the generalities--that is, that many are enslaved each and every year, both in our own country and around the planet. When Dr. Phil was doing his best to recover a girl who'd been taken on Spring Break one year, we kicked in a donation to help fund the search. It came to nothing, so far as we know: Phil's private detectives got too close, their lives were highly endangered, and he shut down his investigation rather than lose them, too.

Pam (my wife) realizes she's been at risk her entire life, being a tiny, 92 pound, 5 foot redhead with the muscular curves of a top gymnast, a high IQ, and in a sense an "early start" with a father who used her intensively until she grew old enough to change her living arrangement. On several occasions she had to use either her track star speed or her black belt fighting skills, sometimes both, to avoid abduction...since for most of her life she qualified as (her own words) "a pedophile's dream". She and I used to joke that when she walked down the street in Sturgis, South Dakota, I had to follow with a mop and a bucket to clean up all the saliva from the guys drooling along behind her...except we weren't really joking all that much. Even today, though she's now 58 years of age and has many terrible disabilities, we regularly take note of men eyeing her with interest.

It's good that you're shining a bit of light on society's dark underbelly. Even were drugs literally nonexistent, lust would go on with its complement of slavery, slaves, and of course slavers. I'd like to suggest that you consider expanding what you've so well begun here--perhaps a series such as a separate hub discussing in some depth the slavery problem in a given state...? I could (and possibly would) do it myself but for two factors: My writing plate is more than full as it is and (most importantly) my gut tells me having a female author of such a serious and female-impacting series would give it extra power.

P.S. I did remember to Rate Up this hub...something I too often forget to do, but maybe it'll help boost it just that tiny bit more....

This is a terrible tragedy. NOBODY should ever be forced to live like this. Anyone who actually supports or condones this kind of treatment, deserves to be beaten within an inch of their life, as no one should be a slave. I only wish I knew about this earlier, as now it makes me want to find out how exactly to stop this. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, as I intend find out exactly how to I can get involved to help these poor people. No matter what it might take.

Anyway, for keywords you might want to add things like:

      human rights

      slavery

      child hood prostitution

      abuse

      sexual, mental and physical abuse

      human trafficking

      slaves

anyway, i hope that helps. i would say more, but that's all i can think of at the moment. however, this makes me very angry people can get away with this.
