Taking Care of the Environment

Updated on June 19, 2013

The roles of citizens in every country to take care of the environment are important. We rely on a good environment for our many needs like food, water, medicine, energy, shelter, clothing, provisions, etc. It is important to take care of it in response for the next generation. Here are some ways we can help:

the Philippine tarsier

DO NOT BUY OR KEEP ENDANGERED ANIMALS

Do not buy or keep pets that are prohibited or endangered. In the Philippines, the tarsier and the Philippine eagle are classified as endangered. These animals need to live in their natural habitat. Their roles are important in controlling the population of other animals in the forests.

ECONOMIZE WATER

If you think that there is an endless supply of water, you are wrong. Water supply can run out any day or anytime. Therefore conservation of our water resources and economy of water usage.are important.

EARN FROM DISCARDING

Gather all used bottles and newspapers and sell them. In the Philippines, there are junkshops in communities that buy used bottles and newspapers. Aside from allowing more space in your house, you also earn from it.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Use old materials for school projects. Always remember to use the RRR system (reduce, reuse, recycle).

SAVE ELECTRICITY

Do not leave your electric devices and equipments on when not in use. It is not only practical and economical, it helps us to take care of the environment.

SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Join environmental organizations, or promote the cause of these organizations. In the Philippines, there are available organizations of these types like Greenpeace, Foundation for Philippine Environment, Haribon, and many others.

WRITE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSE

Write an essay or poem about the importance of taking care of the environment and send them to newspapers for publication. You can use these masterpieces to encourage others to join your cause on environment protection.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

Read books or articles or studies about the environment. This will deepen your understanding about your knowledge on matters relating to the environment, e.g. its growing destruction.

waste segregation

SEGREGATE WASTES

Ensure that your manner of waste disposal is in accordance to policies that protect the environment. Chemicals, for example, when not properly disposed, will spoil the environment and affect the health of every individual in a community.

BE VIGILANT

Watch out for those who violate rules and policies on environmental protection.

LEARN FROM OTHERS

Learn from experiences. Other people, communities or countries have their own experiences about environmental problems and these can help in finding additional measures.

LIVE OUT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sustainable development philosophy encourages intelligent ways to take care of the environment.

tree planting

PLANT, PLANT, PLANT

Plant greens or tress at the back of your house or at any vacant space suitable.

BENEFIT FROM THE SUN

The sun's rays are beneficial. Make the best use of these light rays instead of spending electricity.

I know that these are not the only things one can do for the environment, these are suggestions that can be the start of the move to protect the environment. Remember that all things in the environment are interconnected. It would help not to abuse what the environment provides to maintain balance in our ecological system.

It is so important to reuse and recycle things and conserve energy as much as possible. You have given many good tips in this hub. I loved the photo of the Philippine tarsier in the top photo. Such a cute animal. I know nothing about it. Perhaps you could write a hub about it? Up, useful and interesting votes.
