NATO poured huge resources into training the Afghan armed forces so that when they scaled back their operations in Afghanistan the armed forces of Afghanistan would be ready to take on the Taliban with out relying on NATO.

No doubt about it the Afghan armed forces have held their own pretty well with the Taliban and probably made some progress in some areas. However it seems one Taliban commander has said the organisation is launching a Spring offensive which is what this new attack in Kabul represents one would suspect.

The area they struck is a hub of government buildings and was also at the height of the rush hour obviously the attack was coordinated to go ahead to cause maximum havoc and destruction.

Afghan President Ghani condemned the attack as cowardly and said the Taliban were not man enough to face the Afghan army man to man so they had to engage in a tactic such as this what happened in Kabul.

Suicide bombings and follow up attacks by Taliban gunmen are a regular tactic the Taliban use and what possible glory can be in it for the Taliban God only knows. Perhaps they are proving that they are still very much active and can penetrate the security of Kabul any time they want.

The Taliban attacker turned up in a vehicle packed with explosives and he detonated the vehicle killing 29 and injuring 329 this was followed up by Taliban gunmen getting into a fire fight with Afghan security forces.

Which ever way this was war is going it seems the Taliban still have the power to carry out attacks.

Great points. Kind of a forgotten news story because of the primaries. But it is a very dangerous place and things are not going well. We need to get real about what has to be done there. Either maximize the violence against the Taliban or move on. The only way to defeat them is to destroy them. There is no negotiation because they don't care how long it takes. If we're not willing to do that, we need to sign another agreement for U.N. observers to take over. Back where we started. Shared.
