Fire In The Bronx / Tenants Rights

Updated on January 30, 2013

Housing and Department of Buildings Needs Home Improvements

Let's Get Them Up To Speed With Technology

Websites that are filled with outdated or outright misinformation. Complaints ignored, violations marked as being Resolved when in fact they weren't and "No Access" used  as an excuse for inspectors to not do their jobs. Outdated laws that are designed to protect landlords.

Van Nest Fire photo © by Judy Ferony

The problem is that the files need to be locked down, I see too much tampering going on. Once a complaint is filed and a violation issued, the file should be locked down; only to be appended. Let the public see a landlords track record. Our local politicians make laws that protect the landlords. I guess he who has the most money wins. Everyone else, no so much so.

I'm happy to say that the lint pipe was finally turned around and a housing was built for it as of the Summer of 2010 (or there abouts). Let's hope they clean the flu pipe on a regular basis because they're a common cause of building fires.

A Fireman's Prayer

Author Unknown

When I am called to duty, God,

Whenever flames may rage;

Give me strength to save some life,

Whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child

Before it is too late

Or save an older person

From the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert

And hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently

To put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling

And to give the best in me

To guard my every neighbor

And protect his property.

And if, according to my fate,

I am to lose my life,

Please bless with your protecting

My children and my wife.

4 Alarm Fire in the Van Nest Area of the Bronx - April 14, 2012 We Had a Fire That Took Out 4 Buildings ...

it was reported that 20 firemen and 2 of the homes occupants were injure; I don't believe any of the injuries were serious, thank God for that. As I write the I'm sad to say in a separate fire in Brooklyn today, April 16th, we are getting word that a member of the FDNY was killed in the line of duty fighting a fire. I feel so sorry for their family, friends & fellow firemen whose lives he touched. RIP FDNY LT Richard Nappie :-(

Lower Morris Park Avenue - Know Your Local Representatives

I don't like the direction the Lower Morris Park/Van Nest area of the Bronx is going in. I'm sick and tired of being told "I'm the only one who cares". We need to let the local politicians know how we feel about our neighborhood.

Get Involved!

Landlords have deep pockets, lobbyist provide a voice for them up on "The Hill". Tenant Associations are one way to organize, and my landlord even said that a tenants group is to his advantage. He also said "That I should form ours through him". Yeah, that's like leaving the keys to the hen house with a fox. If we keep up our complacency, I know we'll all be in trouble. This is part of the reason we have no middle class in New York city. The average apartment in Manhattan costs 1 million dollars. Is this what you want people? A law was recently passed, allowing all landlords with rent controlled / stabilized apartments, whose tenants have air conditioners pertruding from the window, to collect an extra $5.00 a month. Why? See my point. Who was responsible for passing that law? Who is fighting for our rights?

Happy Land Fire 1990 - The Bronx, New York, on March 25, 1990

Happy Land Fire
Happy Land Fire

87 people died in this horrific arson fire that took place about a mile from my house. 1959 Southern Boulevard in the Bronx was an illegal social club that was actually ordered to be closed in 1988 for violations including no fire exits, alarms or sprinkler system.

Fire In The Bronx

Poor People Have No Rights

Why is it that 22 people were allowed to live in a wooden structure with no sprinkler system. The news reported that a permit was applied for to make the house a 3 family dwelling (legally), but it seems to me that this is already what they were doing. Why? Now as a result 9 children and 1 adult are dead, firemen were injured and we all cry our crocodile tears for them. Why is it always after the fact? Its also another case of people entering our country illegally and having no regards for our laws, that are in place to protect us, as well as make our firefighters job a little safer.

The Father's Day Fires of 2001 - A Terrible Day For The FDNY

Father's Day Fire 10th Anniversary Mass

Firefighters John Downing (Ladder 163), Brian Fahey (Rescue 4) and Harry Ford (Rescue 4) were remembered for their dedication and courage at a memorial mass on June 18, 2011, at St. Sebastian's Roman Catholic Church in Woodside, Queens.

The ceremony marked the 10th anniversary of their deaths in a fire and explosion on June 17, 2001, Father's Day.

Dozens of firefighters turned out to pay tribute to the three heroes.

Firefighter Downing, 40, was survived by his wife, Anne, his daughter, Joanne, and son, Michael. The 11-year veteran of the FDNY was remembered as a man with a formidable size and a kind heart.

Firefighter Fahey, 46, was a 14-year veteran of the Department who was remembered for his sense of humor and leadership. He was survived by his wife, Mary, and their three sons, Brendan, Patrick and James.

As an experienced 24-year veteran of the Department, Firefighter Ford received nine citations for bravery before his death at age 50. He was survived by his wife, Denise, daughter, Janna, and sons, Harry and Gerard.

The 2001 fire at a Queens hardware store injured dozens of firefighters, several critically. Fire marshals learned the deadly fire was accidentally set by two teenage boys.

The Bronx Is Burning

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City

New York City in 1977 was in the middle of wild upheaval on all fronts, from the hunt for the Son of Sam killer and the citywide blackout to a brutal mayor's race and the rise of punk rock and the zenith of disco. In Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning, journalist Jonathan Mahler revisits all those storylines through another drama, which grabbed tabloid headlines all summer long: the outrageous--and pennant-winning--New York Yankees. The Yankees weren't the greatest baseball team ever assembled--they weren't even the greatest of the era (the talent-laden Cincinnati Reds were superior player for player). But no modern team has earned more type than the "Bronx Zoo" Yanks of the late '70s, thanks in no small part to such characters as meddling owner George Steinbrenner, firebrand manager Billy Martin, and flashy slugger Reggie Jackson.

But what more is there to say about a ball club, even one as stormy and successful as the '77 Yanks? Mahler wisely strays out of the dugout and into the chaotic city to give his chronicle breadth and shape. Mahler deftly brings together a host of characters and developments--from doomed old-school catcher Thurman Munson to congressional hellraiser Bella Abzug, from media kingpin Rupert Murdoch to battling politicos Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo, from downtown punks to the glittery decadence of Studio 54. The result is a lively read that will entertain readers who wouldn't know an RBI from CBGB. --Steven Stolder

10-17-1968 FDNY 23rd St. Fire

I was always so passionate about appreciating firemen, even before 911; I show up every time there's a demonstration protesting the closure of a firehouse, and will continue to do so whenever possible. Please feel free to sign my guestbook, you can leave your fire prevention tips or a review of fire prevention products you like; or best of all you can tell our firemen "Thank You".

I love my Firemen. - I had FDNY firemen on both sides of my family.

You make such good and important points. Here we have people willing to risk their lives in case of a fire, and dishonorable landlords are allowed to line their own pockets with disaster money.

Learn basic Tenant rights that are constantly in question, but rarely acted on appropriately. Landlords - know your boundaries, and Tenants - maintain your freedom.

@TonyBurnell: Tony, not here in the Wild West of the Bronx; Realtors, Developers and Tenants do whatever they want, we have a DA that let's Felony Crimes go, so these become minute matters till someone (usually a Fireman) dies. But yes, you're right, in most normal places it's the Rule of Law.

When a tenant commences occupancy in investment property it is essential to set rules that establish stability in property management and lease practices. Tenants in most circumstances will need to be fully briefed on the function of the property and how it impacts them. Leasing practices for real estate agents and brokers should reflect controls and practices relative to each property and its unique operational elements.

Thank you for this very poignant tribute to the FDNY and may we never forget those who put themselves at risk for us and the too many who have paid the ultimate price for their dedication. We should all have our rights protected in being up to fire codes for sure. Blessed.

Great lens! I do have a fire prevention tip. It is on my stain removal lens, 'Out, Damn, Spot'

it is, clean your clothes dryers lint trap. It is more detailed than that and there is a video with specific instructions and what can happen if you don't do this right. I hope that this will prevent a horrific fire.

@nsixx99: Thanks, I've recently been refurbishing this lens. We had a terrible fire in the Tri-State area on Christmas that claimed the lives of 3 children and their grandparents; I can't even imagined the suffering and pain of that magnitude of loss. My heart goes out to the family; it really breaks my heart.

What a wonderful lens and I admire your dedication to the cause. Fires safety is very important and unfortunately too many people are learning that lesson the hard way. I for one have smoke detectors in every room of my house and check them regularly.
