Terrorism. Scourge of our Time

Updated on April 20, 2013

The Ugly Reality

The Remains of a London Bus
The Remains of a London Bus

Sad Lookout for Planet Earth.

Having been born in war time, I was glad growing up that the dreadful WW II was over. Food again plentiful, no checking under the beds before getting in. Since WWII, there have been countless other wars through out the world. Our beautiful planet ravaged by people unhappy with their lot, displaced and outraged or just determined to inflict their beliefs on others. Religion, oil, greed, politics have caused people to take up arms against one another. This has caused another breed of dissident to raise their heads, the Terrorist.

Terrorism is rife these days, there is hardly a country untouched by people unknown or proud supporters of their own cause, creating death, destruction and mayhem on others, innocents, children, women, animals, are all victims of these insidious attackers. The first time I realised the enormity of this problem was on a visit to London in the eighties. Walking through an area of the City, London's Financial district, all the windows of the high rise office blocks were smashed and boarded up. Huge areas were affected. This act was perpetrated by the IRA.

The very name Al Qaeda is enough to cause alarm and fear. Terrorism is everywhere, Piracy is happening in many areas of the high seas, Somalia, the South China Sea and areas of the Caribbean are no go areas for sailors. The Middle East is in Turmoil with no end in sight.

The name Terrorist goes back a long time to the French Revolution but actual acts of Terorism started way back when Jews who aided the Roman invaders were killed by other Jews, Guy Fawks was a more recent tterrorist when his Gunpowder Plot was foiled in time to save the life of King James. Recent terrorist organizations are too numerous to name, ETA in Spain, The IRA in The UK, Hamas, Al Qaeda, , to name but a few. Many people have real problems to face in life and have been sorely wronged, others merely think that their religion or way of life is superior to other people's way of thinking. Cowardice seems to be the mark of the terrorist. The latest point blank shooting of a 14 year old girl in Pakistan is the lowest of the low deeds by these fanatics.

Things only get worse. The two Chetchein louts who killed 3 people and maimed many more are examples of mindless terror with home made bombs. Why attack the Boston marathon? Sad.

Terrorism affects us all. When we travel we are all treated like potential terrorists. No one knows where they will strike next. Sadly, no end appears in sight.

Eager Recruits

Is there a Solution?

When I was a child, I read the book, "The Water babies" written by Charles Kingsley in 1885. I read about Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby. If people abided by this golden rule, the world would be a happier place. There is so much turmoil and dissent now that it is impossible to think of a time when we can let down our guard and travel and go about our business freely anywhere in the world. This is a very sad conclusion but our beautiful planet has been polluted by man in so many ways that it is probably too late to stop the mayhem. Wikileaks may have done more good than harm by bringing information about governments out into the open.

There are so many ready and eager recruits eager to join a cause which appeals to them. We are destined to a future looking over our shoulders to see who is about to do us harm. The violence spawns more violence until we are in a whirlpool that can only spiral downwards. Who can guess where the future lies for us and our children. It is said that religion divides men. Perhaps in the future people will not be brainwashed into following their own brand of religion with the mayhem it causes. Who knows where the future will take us. The internet has caused the World to shrink with social sites linking people around the world. Shakespeare had it right in Shylock's speech "If you prick us, do we not bleed?" We are all the same under the skin!

Two years on from writing this article, the situation has not improved . Afghanistan, Pakistan are descending into a sad internal war. Will there ever be peace in our time?

Hi Kenneth, thanks for stopping by. I haven't published much on hubpages lately since I was disallowed by google adsense. I still write though but in my notebook. Perhaps I should start again. I had only reached $35 in 18 months so no great loss!

It is sad for our children! I remember when banks didn't have 'bandit barriers,' and you could meet air travelers at the gate where they disembarked. In one sentence you managed to beautifully define what is wrong with this world. You said, "Religion, oil, greed, politics have caused people to take up arms against one another." In all kinds of ways. I'm not sure what the solution is, but you have definitely defined the problem. Excellent work, as always.

The sad thing is that so many people need religion to give their life some meaning and as a prop. If only they would stop thrusting their form of worship down peoples throats. Maybe education is a partial answer. Once again I say that it is sad for our children, the innocents.

Yes religion is the main cause. The terrorists of mumbai attack did not kill the muslims. So a muslim couple in Taj hotel actually shared food with the terrorists while non muslims were getting mercilessly slaughtered.

I would rather not live with high profile and in major cities. Intelligence have found out another major attack on America like 9/11 which will happen soon i am afraid.

The solution, we don't know yet but i am 100% sure it is not through violence

Thanks for the insight, Cleanclover. You have explained the situation well. The outcome, sadly is the same, whatever the motive, innocent people die and live in fear. Another example of religion being the root cause of a sad situation.

As you say, it's just not killing people but much more to it.

Those pics are of mumbai attack. Mohammad kasab the lone terrorist captured is a military commando. He fought like a soldier of pakistan. The attacks were meant to create war like situation between pakistan and India so the Pakistani government can divert the troops from the afghan border to the borders of India. Which the US is opposing

Pakistan will rather fight non muslims than the taliban which are also muslims and would drag India into war so regardless who wins India suffer casualties as well.

When you look at this bigger picture it becomes evident the cause of these terrorist attacks.

It's just not killing people but much more to it.

How true, Papalaaz. When you consider how much money has been spent on the war in Iraq, if only it had been spent for good! With so many angry people in the world a little of those billions of dollars spent in the right place may have helped. Such a shame we have brought ourselves and our children to this. Thanks for the comment

Hi Presigo They are the innocents, what a terrible state of affairs. Religion and greed and injustice have so much to answer for! Thanks for stopping by.

Sadly GW, we need to look beyond what are after all only symptoms (terrorism in all it's nasty guises) and discover and address the root causes which always tend to be the same: injustice, poverty, oppression and disregard. We could so easily solves so many of these causes if we addressed them at root. Instead we spend ridiculous amounts of money on making ourselves supposedly "safe" when safety is a myth while the root causes remain in place.

I agree Gypsy what we have left for our children is shameful how can we do this to them ? It saddens me that they have to be a part of all this hate and animosity

Well I told it as I see it, Alexander. We can never drop our guard or be certain that our travel will be safe. It is sad for our children because this is a wonderful world made smaller and more confined by the actions of these people. Thanks for dropping by.

Sad and negative is one way to look at it. Some say that writing is about truth, and I firmly believe that. It's interesting that war has devolved into terrorism for some. It's illogical. If the extremist, violent Muslims get their way, and the whole world becomes their brand of Islam, how can they think the opposition won't fight back using the same tactics? These idiots are setting a precedent by sneaking across borders into planes, busses and buildings, making war a permanent fixture no matter who "wins".
