Advantages And Disadvantages Of Being A Taxi Driver - Part 1

Updated on April 22, 2011

There are many things to consider if you are thinking about becoming a taxi driver. In this hub I hope to discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages that I have found since becoming a taxi driver about five years ago.

If you are looking for flexible work hours then taxi driving is hard to beat. You are basically self employed and entitled to all the freedom and perks that come with being self employed.

You can work has hard or as little as you want. You can park up under a shady tree on a sunny day and have a snooze, or you can wait on taxi stands for a walk up passenger. You can go to the bank or have a two hour lunch with your spouse; you just have to let the dispatch operator know how long you will be and off you go.

You may have to carry a cell phone during your breaks in case the dispatch operator wants to contact you, but this rarely happens and I usually carry a cell phone anyway.

Weekends & Holidays

A disadvantage of being a taxi driver is that my weekends are spend working. The week may start off quietly but as it progresses the work gets steadily busier until it peaks on a Saturday night. Usually there is work available until 4 or 5 am on Sunday morning if you want. However I generally don't stay out after the night clubs close at 3 am.

Rostered Hours

You may be obligated to the taxi company to fill a scheduled roster with occasional night or early morning shifts, but usually there is a lot of leeway within these rosters.

You can either give, sell or swap your unwanted shifts with your colleagues, or you can phone in sick. You may not get paid for your days off, but you can always make up for it on a busy weekend.

Relief Drivers

Another option is to get a relief driver. Most relief drivers get paid 40% of their take. But relief drivers come with a few hassles. The hardest thing is to find an honest relief driver, one who will declare all of their take to you. Because of the amount of cash involved, this can be tricky. But honest relief drivers are out there, its just a matter of finding them.

The other hassle with relief drivers is that generally speaking, no-one looks after your vehicle like you do. A relief driver may waste a lot of petrol since they don't have to pay for it. So you may have to keep an eye on the amount of kilometers they are doing and petrol they are using compared to the amount of money they are declaring to you that they made.

If you find a good relief driver you may want to double shift your taxi and maximize your income.

I agree I have recently been thinking about pepper spray. My brother is a policeman so I will ask him about it. We hide our cash in the cab and have a false wallet with just a few dollars in it. Thanks for reminding me!

I guess one of the biggest disadvantages to being a taxi driver is the danger involved. Taxi drivers are often the target of criminals who know that they carry wades of cash on them. They are alone in the cab with complete strangers. If I were a cab driver I would definitely carry some kind of self defense weapon like pepper spray or a stun gun!
