The Courage to Change

Updated on April 9, 2012

Time for Change

each moment in time changes
each moment in time changes | Source

Many of us grew up hearing the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and "leave well enough alone". Have these sayings and attitudes that we grew up with made it hard for us to embrace change? Have we been taught by society to accept things the way they and not to change what we don't like? Are we evolving or have we already evolved into a population that has been taught not to question a system that works at making life so easy and convenient for many while ignoring the needs of more?

Life is change and change is good. There is not one moment in time that is the same as any moment ever before. Think about that for a moment as that moment changes. That is one of the incredible gifts of life. That means that nothing needs to be thought of as permanent and we can change; it's a natural part of who we are as a part of the planet. Corny? maybe, and totally opposite of what we've been taught; "don't rock the boat".

Well I'm here to say rock away, it's good for the soul.

Our Past Affects Our Present

Change can be scary. We are all brought into this world from our mothers womb; the similarities to the rest of our life experiences stop there. Each one of us comes into this world received by different hands, in vastly different conditions, situations, environments which will begin to shape the people we become. From birth each of us starts to be affected and a reflection of our surroundings.

The people who love us or don't, encourage us or don't, teach us or don't all affect how we perceive ourselves as we grow up. Those around us who model how to make change are living examples to follow. Self confidence, courage, honesty and the thirst for knowledge are all drivers of an individuals ability to grasp and embrace change over the years and to actually strive for it.

Not everyone is surrounded by conditions that give confidence and encourage individual growth. We live in a society that markets to the public as to sheep that will follow them over the cliff, and society buys in, literally.

Great Video all About Change

Manipulated

Our world is filled with distractions, toys, unnecessary items that keep us moving forward, making our lives so convenient that we don't have to consider changing anything because the world has been created perfectly by the marketers of North America. Why on earth would you ever need to think about change on any level? Life has been made into a tidy little package taht we are all expected to want to be a part of.

We have bought into the propaganda that we all have to be the same, do the same, want the same, despite the push for us all to be "individuals". We're supposed to be individuals under a predetermined definition put out there by the marketing gurus whose soul purpose is to make money for the corporations. The advertising campaigns we are bombarded with daily do not encourage going against the establishment, being different, thinking on our own, so it makes it very difficult to consider taking our own path, making changes and going against the norm in all areas of our lives.

Just Do It!

But individual change in any and all ways can be done. It takes faith, courage, self confidence and the realization that if something you change doesn't work out it can be changed again. Life is change.

The realization that you can make effective change also comes with practice and small successes. Self confidence and positive change can spur creativity that can add such value to your life that making change can become contagious once you start. When you see the results of making changes and taking control of your life and situations that have not worked for you in the past, you become empowered and open minded.

When you become open minded and start thinking outside the box you become open to possibilities that can lead you down life paths that had never occurred to you. Making changes brings with it an awareness of the power you have as an individual to actually steer your life in directions that work for you.

Hard to Do?

Do you find making change in your life challenging?

See results

Change is about the journey and what it teaches us about ourselves, our world and our ability as people. We are a flexible, adaptable race, lucky enough to have intelligence, opportunity and a huge world to interconnect with and explore.

If you are someone who is on the fence about making a change I encourage you to go for it, make the leap, have confidence in yourself and an adventure that embraces whatever change you want!

@ Amy; thanks for sharing your story and experiences; while I'm glad you were inspired by the piece, I am more grateful that you had the courage and thoughtfulness to share your personal experiences; we need each others stories to help us realize we can get through anything life throws at us. Thanks for confirming that change is good; what an amazing transition you have gone through only to come out a stronger individual as a result! My hats off to you; the "authentic" you that is.

This read made my heart sing. The last two years I have seen divorce, an excellent annual review from my 13-year workplace with a layoff 2-weeks following and the stress of living with a decision to divorce and the realization of the nightmare that kept me in the marriage too long. I have come to realize there are no guarantees in life, yet we cannot let life's experiences defeat us. Despite the depressing turn of events, I have grown into being my own person. I am not afraid any longer of expressing my differences, dressing in my own style, living alone, with my Scottish Terrier as my companion and not allowing anyone to make me feel less than I am. I finally feel like me...authentic. Thank you, eye say, for this dynamic, uplifting, enlightening and courage-inspiring piece. Magnifique!

Totaly agree..we start the cycle of change from the minute we are conceived. In our youth we embrace it, look forward to it, desire it, but as we get older we tend to run from change and the uncomfortable feeling it tends to bring. Great Submission! I for one love change! It means I am growing and not turning into a stagnate pond of stinky water! Giggle!!

@ Cre8tor: I find change challenging myself, but I force myself through it and am always happy I did no matter what the outcome, even if I didn't get the expected results. I have learned to gain something from every attempt I make at changing something. I also understand different changes require different energy output so have become more thoughtful as I personally work through the process of change. Glad you love the point of view and get the message ;O)

@ reikieffect: great point that "change makes us feel scared and weak", and agreed that getting past these challenges does make us better humans.

good additional thoughts and I appreciate the additional perspective, thanks for contributing to the hub.

@ib: "if it ain't broke don't fix it", I believe is still a good motto, and I believe if it's not working change it up.

Direction of change is also key, and unfortunately sometimes the direction chosen to change towards is more difficult to change back from. Something to be considered when backing change, and a good point that it should be asked or thought about.

thanks for your input, valuable food for thought.

Eye say, your hub is full of thruth. We can't stop evolution, and from the very moment we are conceived...we start that evolution. And we want to have some control because change makes us feel scared and weak, but is in these changes and challenges that we grow to be better human beings. I enjoyed your piece a lot! Up and beautiful!

Not all change is good, so make sure the change is going to be better than not changing.

Senator Obama promised he would change Washington, but no one thought to explicitly ask the direction of the change.

I agree that it is instilled into most of us to resist change. We are creatures of comfort and are hesitant to step outside of our comfort zones. It is that first step that is often the hardest, imagine how many opportunities are missed because we feel we can't take that first step? Life is too short not to step outside our comfort zones from time to time and we should try to embrace change rather than spending our time trying to avoid change.

I like the message you are sending in your hub. Thank you for sharing.
