10 Dangers of Drinking Coffee Incorrectly

Updated on April 4, 2015

You've had a great night's sleep. Now you hear your alarm and slowly wake, stretch, and yawn all at the same time. You hate it, but it's time to face another work day at a job that you hate.

You stumble to your kitchen, flip on your small television you keep on the counter so you can get a head start on today's news as you fill your veins with good, refreshing, black coffee. "Uh, oh! Tom Cruise is demanding a billion dollars for his next movie, "Mission Impossible 12!"

Then it happens. Tragedy of the worst kind. Not realizing how hot your first cup of coffee was, and you never let it sit for a moment and cool, you burn your lips and tongue with swigging-down your first coffee of the day, now you are in agony. The burning won't let up. On top of your burn, you have spilled coffee all over your new kitchen counter and on your new vinyl floor.

All because you drank your coffee the wrong way. Here is more proof-positive that you need to study yourself and circumstances before gulping-down your favorite brand of coffee.

Serious lip burn

can happen easily if you are not aware just hot the coffee is before putting it to your lips. This is a common mistake made by over-achievers who have demanding jobs. Their minds are on everything but the temperature of the coffee. Next time, stop. Gently touch the coffee cup with the end of your index finger. If you cannot count to eight before burning your finger, wait until the coffee is cool enough to drink. Simple.

Asking for trouble

This lady with her delicious cup of coffee made at her favorite coffee shop is headed for trouble with that thick foam on her coffee. Why? Here is why. She starts to take a sip of this delicious brew and suddenly an "old flame" shows-up to get coffee and when she sees him, she reacts with a gasp sending the foam on customers near her. Oh, if she would have just thought to put the coffee down before reacting.

Simply put, if you want your mouth to be burned sending you reeling in pain, just chug your hot coffee like a real he-man. The girls you are trying to impress are now laughing at you for not drinking your coffee correctly.

This guy must be a writer for he is crouched over a typewriter. He is deeply-involved with a career-boosting story and drinking coffee that helps his creativity. But one moment ago, his lover, "Mimi," from the East Side of New York, brought him a fresh cup of coffee and he didn't see her. But the next sip he takes, he will get a horrible surprise: A hot wave of coffee will cover his tongue washing away his train of thought. "Mimi" didn't mean any harm. But he should have been a wise coffee drinker and checked the cup for heat.

Lack of control

is what's going on with this man. The waitress gladly handed him a fresh "cup of Joe," and just for a flickering of a moment, his hand slipped causing him to fumble wildly to gain control of the cup containing his hot coffee. But as you can see, he didn't. And his lack of coffee cup control sent him to the local burn center with serious burns on his face and body.

Coffee quiz

What one thing do these two couples have in common? Is it the work at the same office? Do they share an "ex?" Or do they all like the same film stars? Possibly, but no. They are all talking and laughing and having the best time in the world. They all have the day off and all agreed to meet at their local coffee house to grab a cup of coffee and catch-up on local gossip. What a great way to spend this lovely morning.

But that was until the talking and laughing blinded their judgment and one of the girls spilled their hot coffee on their best friend causing a near "cat fight" with angry accusations flying through the air.

So let these photos be a lesson for you. Please pay attention to your cup of coffee while talking and laughing with a close friend. The friendship (and burn center charge) you save could be your own.

Pure foolishness

in the movies is funny. But in real life, it can mean a horrible burn when trying to turn-up a bowl of hot coffee and drink it down without removing it from your mouth. These two photos are pretty much self-explanatory. The photo on top is an average guy and probably showing-off to get a few laughs. Photo on the bottom is comedian, Bill Murry, who is using a bowl of cool coffee or some tasty liquid that resembles coffee to further accent the role is playing.

NOTE: there is an exception to this rule of drinking coffee straight out of the bowl. But only if you have been stranded in the dessert for days without water and you have struggled to hike several miles to the nearest store. The first thing you see is a coffeemaker with a pot of coffee, and in your favor, it is not hot. So you can "chug away" and quench that thirst.

Hard proof

that hot coffee can and will cause one a severe burn if not handled with care. So thereby, I am going to let this photo do my talking for me. Mishandling or falling prey to any of the "dangers" on this story that are related to drinking coffee can lead to sometimes-serious burns. Know your coffee. And know the temperature every time you have coffee alone or with friends. It doesn't matter if you are laughed at for being so careful with your coffee. Remember, you are first responsible for you.

Don't be a "doofus" with your coffee

      Dearest Cathrine,

Hey, thanks for the compliments and you now drink coffee. I am glad to know this. I do know that in the coffee bean is this chemical that helps arthritic knees. And I do have the highest version of arthritis: Fibromyalgia and Neurothopy, damaged nerve endings.

      Coffee helps me.

      And please stay in touch.

I'm a new coffee drinker. Oh, I used to have the occasional cup, but I only stared drinking a cup every morning within the past 12 months. I read that it was healthy. I forgot why. Thanks for teaching the the pitfalls of drinking coffee the wrong way. Fortunately, I was not drinking coffee when I read this o my laughter would have had me spewing, and/or choking, on coffee. voted up++

      Hi, Kathleen,

I know. And that is an admirable trait. I love it that you DO speak the truth and do not tell people what they like to hear.

You be blessed my dear friend.

Yes, or you can accidentally snort up your nose. I hate it when I get to work and discover a brown spot or two down the middle of my white sweater or blouse. I've gone so far as to remove the blouse in the bathroom and rinse the stain out. Then wear the wet garment until it dries. No fun here.
