The Economy - What Do You Think Started It?

Updated on January 28, 2009

So what do you think started the current economic condition?

Well as for me . . . I didn't think this at first, but now I think the trend of large corporations buying up small local businesses led us down this road.  Now when a large corporation goes down or suffers half of a town can find itself out of work.  When small businesses were independent and not attached to a large corporation, a town had more companies, a diverse pool of industries pumping income into the city's infrastructure.

I remember when large bookstores shut down small local bookstores.  They simply could not compete with the large superstores.  WalMart (and I like WalMart and shop there) but they did the same thing with small discount stores.  If WalMart went under AWHOLE lot of folks would be out of work, not to mention what they would do to small town economies.

It can feel safe to be employed by a giant or to have 2-3 giant corporations in town, but when they tank, there's gonna be a whole lot of hurting.  Hopefully one of the things that will come from the current economic condition will be the start and thriving of small local businesses.  Who knows, it might start right here on the Internet.
