The Girl Who Silenced The World.

Updated on March 20, 2012

If Only They Had Listened

Her name is Serern Cullis- Suzuki, she was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. At the time of the taping of the video, she had been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 years old she started the Environmental Children's Organization ( ECO ). It is a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other children about environmental issues.

In 1993 they had raised enough money to be able to go the the U.N.'s Earth Summit. They wanted to remind decision makers of the nations, that their actions or inactions would effect the planet.

This 12 year old girl gave an amazing speech and received an a standing ovation.

The only problem is, that she gave the world a speech that silenced it's leaders for 5 minutes. But, then they stopped listening.

The political leaders in the U.N. are powerful men. Many of them are rich. They are not like the people this young girl was talking about. While they were listening to her, they did seem to care, but the next day phones rang, smile for pictures, make deals, shake hands...etc. Her words faded away. But, starving children did not. They just died. Today there are more starving children who are going to die, because no one will help them. Sudan is an example. The leader of Sudan is killing the people who live in his own country!

If only anyone had listened to this 12 year old girl, who spoke to the U.N. 19 years ago.

Maybe the world could have been a better place, if only.

Can the world leaders ever listen to the girl who " Silenced The World For 5 Minutes"?

thank you so much for your comment. You are right, even if one person makes a difference it is good. Your optimism is wonderful. I wish more people were like youl

A very sobering message for one so young. But the good news is there are more like her and they do care. One person at a time, one small town at a time will begin to make a difference. It breaks my heart to think of all those who are hungry in the far corners of the world. It saddens me more to know that right here in the small town in which I live there are those who are hungry. The sad truth is that helping others and finding ways to make a difference in our small towns is not newsworthy so often goes unnoticed. But a lot of it is happening. I remain optimistic that we can make a difference. Your message is loud and clear and we need to all heed it. ps

Thanks for commenting Lee, in fact I was not expecting any comments. I knew there was not going to be any changes. The world would continue upon it's history. I just wanted to put this up, because I would rather have children like her run the world than the men who run the world we have now.

Great Hub. I remember this being in the news and less than 5 minutes by the media. Too bad. Of course, in Africa with the Sudan, Uganda, e..g. as the matter with Kovy (which I am preparing an article on) the world leaders know in order to solve the problem the military might to stop the evil leaders for the purpose of saving the children would endanger between 30,000 and 50,000 children's lives due to tribal rivalries; and those are conservative amounts. So what to do? Unfortunately, It cannot be done without strong military might IN FAVOR OF SAVING THE CHILDREN but to do so other children will be killed. As to the environment, well unfortunately we have now learned allot of the information she had back then was based on "junk science" and some of the scientist in England,Germany and the USA have come forward to admit they LIED 20 years ago to gain research grant money. Sad, very sad. Wish I knew the answer, the world is in trouble. We must do something. For now we must pray for the world, its leaders and the children. I voted UP and all across except funny. Great Job. Lee
