The New Republican Projection
It has become the greatest false equivalency in American political history; the modern conservatives' claim that they are the party of Lincoln. Nothing could be further from the truth. Abraham Lincoln was the original RINO (Republican In Name Only) and modern conservatives (Republicans) would have despised him. For the Republican Party of this young, 21st century to even pretend that they would have supported Lincoln, let alone voted for him, is laughable. For the past 50 years, they have exponentially fought and voted against everything that could be considered compassionate towards African Americans. The modern Republican Party has become so conservative and overtly biased against all minorities (and women) that it is unfathomable that any comparison to the measured and intelligent approach of Lincoln would be anything less than disingenuous.
It is an insult to common sense and historical facts to compare the Republican Party of 150 years ago to the Party as it stands now, and, for that matter, to compare Democrats from then and now. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 sealed the deal for this reversal of fortune. Moderate Democrats in the south abandoned the Party in droves, and the voting record (as well as party affiliation) reflect where the conservative movement has gone in this country.
It is the typical projection strategy of the exposed racist. Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty of. Donald Trump does it all the time. There is no shame when you don't even understand what it means. Being a racist is easy, so long as you have denial as your backboard and a lot of people who agree with you in the wings. It is why we are where we are today, stuck in a race war with one side holding it's ears and singing Dixie.
Republicans can claim Lincoln in name, but on ideology, they have no shame.
