'To Kill a Republic' -Whitewash Its History, Tear Out Pages/Revise Content, Keep It Out of Hearts and Out of Minds

Another passion of mine, is learning about and from History. It saddens me that so much is being forgotten or revised.

Gregory Peck played the role of Atticus Finch in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Another One Bites the Dust

Of the many books read, when I was a much younger version of me, one book stands apart, also, I've always been a big fan of the wonderful old classic movies, one in particular, stands out and consistently remains in my Top Ten.

The book which stands apart, the movie which holds a special place in my heart, positioned right around 3.5 in my Top Ten?

  • To Kill a Mockingbird

Naturally, my take on it now is very different than it was as a child. There were things I didn't grasp back then and I am sure that I had a hundred questions for my Parents.

I remember the first time I watched the movie, I was peering through my fingers much of the time, but I was hooked.

The Classics, whether books or movies, a thorough study of World History, a thorough and accurate study of American History are parts of many parts, which help to shape each of us.

I could not accurately guess the number of times I've watched the movie. Suffice it to say, "Plenty" and chances are greatly improving that I'll be watching it once more, in the very near future.

I love Gregory Peck in the role of Atticus and believe that he was born for this role.

I think he was one of the best, from an Era that will never be repeated and that hopefully, time will not forget.

The movie although dark, has many shining moments and while it deals with heavy subject matter, it is tackled, not glossed over!

You are left remembering the admirable characters, not the loathsome ones and the best of humanity stands out, in the midst of a lot of ugliness.

'To Kill a Mockingbird' is a national treasure and needs to be shared, not shelved!

"There is some language in the book that makes people uncomfortable", says Biloxi school board's V.P. Kenny Holloway.

Good Golly Miss Molly, best not let the little rascals leave home. Dare not turn on the television or the computer, for undoubtedly they'll hear things and see things that will make them feel very "uncomfortable."

So, this is reason enough to deprive eighth graders in Biloxi, MS and possibly other students in other schools, as their school boards take notes, from reading it, discussing it, debating it, learning from it, tackling it!

Lord knows there's a lot going on today that should make every person, young or old, uncomfortable, but, who is deciding what is and isn't appropriate and what should and shouldn't make kids uncomfortable?

What is their real agenda?

We are depriving our children of so many things, in an effort to what... protect them? Is that what's going on or is it much more calculated?

This book, other banned books/movies, that might make them feel "uncomfortable" are exactly what they need right about now and so that makes them a liability!

Of course it's reason enough. This is 2017 and we're in the....what should we call this Period of time, this Era that we're in?

  • The Dumb Down Period
  • The Distortion Decade
  • The Era of Un-Doing

Which best describes this Period of time in American History which glosses over, dumbs down and undoes?

Dang girl, It's just a book! Chill. No big deal.

It is just a book, just a statue, just another bench, just another Marker, just another Memorial, it's just a Cross erected in the name of Peace for crying out loud!

They are just some very old documents, it's just a flag, it's just an Anthem that nobody really pays any attention to anyway.....

It is just our Country...and day by day by day...we are killing a beautiful thing that shouldn't be killed...it's called a Republic and once gone, it doesn't come back!

In today's climate, I have to wonder how many of the Undoers are feeling accomplished. Are they legends in their own minds? Today's version of mighty conquerors?

When one more piece of Americana is dismantled, locked away, destroyed, either at their hands or as a result of their actions, is satisfaction gained?

I have to wonder.....if any person that has ever chanted the words, "tear it down", "ban the book", "burn the flag" (could also say "burn the book and ban the flag") and/or has taken part in it, is ever truly satisfied?

What of those that teach/instruct that it is perfectly okay to destroy property, burn flags and topple statues, are they ever satisfied?

So many never reflect on their own shortcomings, considering that maybe they are the problem, looking within for ways to improve themselves.

Instead, an entire lifetime is spent searching for someone or some thing else to blame.

Satisfaction is sought in all the wrong places, for all the wrong reasons and lately and often, their scapegoat is The United States of America.

"The defendant is not guilty-but somebody in this courtroom is. Now, gentlemen, in this country, our courts are the great levelers. In our courts, all men are created equal. I'm no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our courts and of our jury system-that's no ideal to me, that's a living, working reality! Now I am confident that you gentlemen will review, without passion, the evidence that you have heard, come to a decision and restore this man to his family..." -Atticus Finch

Fish out of Water

Have you ever made the comment, something along the lines of...if my Grandmother were here today, she'd not believe her eyes or if Grandpa could come back for just a day, he'd go into shock?

Have you ever spoken of someone rolling over or turning over in their grave? Implying that if they were somehow 'Deloreaned' here today, they'd be, as a fish out of water?

It would be much the same, if we were to go back in time. We too would be as a fish out of water. It was a completely different world and yet we pass judgement on all that came before, as if all things would be the same, apples to apples.

~~~~~~~~~~
Pilgrims; both the Puritans and Separatists left tyranny behind, as they sought to start over here, in a new land, free to Serve God as they so chose and free to self govern!
Once these shores were reached, they entered into a Covenant with God.
This Covenant would be their guide for self-governance and would be very instrumental in paving the way for the writing of our U.S. Constitution, nearly 150 years later.
As we know from our History, July 4th, 1776 by the actions of the 2nd Continental Congress, Independence was unanimously declared for the 13 original colonies (the thirteen United States of America)
Wicked old King George would not only suffer a crushing defeat in his efforts to control and rule over the citizens of this little startup Country, he'd be left wondering what was it about these people.
It was Freedom!
They had tasted it and there was no going back. Those before us, looked within, looked to heaven, stood tall and refused to give up!
Backpedaling
My thoughts on this course that we've been on, banning and dismantling parts and pieces of our History, often times without a blink of an eye, is that we no longer stand tall, we're giving up on all that was fought for and won and we are doing it without reason and without cause.
All the battles fought here on this soil by those that came before and all the battles around the world to keep Tyranny from finding its way back to our shores, all that was won so long ago, is out of the minds of a growing number of people!
Do those working tirelessly to undo our History, placing wedges between us, all while creating cracks in our Foundation, all while filling young minds with lies, honestly believe that through their efforts.....
Something better this way comes?
This mindset scares me more than any of the darkest places, concealing those with the cruelest of intent in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and more than any of the realistic, horror films of today!
      Hi Pop -
      Thanks for commenting!
      Yes it is a travesty, but the left doesn't see it that way and they've convinced a generation or two that all of this erasing is necessary, because Feelings Rule~History Drools!
      Just heard yesterday that George Washington himself has now been targeted.
      A Memorial to the very first President of the U..S. will be removed (along with General Lee's) at the Church attended in VA, in order "to make worshipping more welcoming."
      Nothing is off limits! :-(
      What's taking place now is a travesty! The left is doing the exact same thing as ISIS. The terror groups destroys a nation's past to insure that they will never have a future.
      Tim, you've made some great points here, I barely touched on them and didn't mean to do so!
      I never thought I'd see the day when Mark Twain would be banned or that 'The great American novel' could not be enjoyed by all children.
      I just heard a News story that, once again, has me questioning today's progressive socialist agenda.
      It's about a 'Lesson' for Grades K-2. This age group is asked to color a picture of their hand with the color of their skin. There is then a discussion about how it doesn't matter the color. Okay....then WHY THE HECK EVEN GO THERE?
      Now it is on the mind of the child, when it never was before.
      Now it becomes the focus.
      Now it becomes an issue.....
      I've shared this before. We've raised three children and their friends were just that....their friends. Their teammates were just that....their teammates. My daughter's husband is just that.....her husband. My grandchildren are just that, my grandchildren.
      It matters not, the color of their skin.
      What is really going on?
      Not just with Race and words but with anything and everything {Americana} targeted for elimination?
      Thanks Tim!
      While I was writing, I was thinking about the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
      Every kid needs to be reading about their many adventures. I too am a big fan of Mark Twain.
      Your Teacher handled it perfectly. I guess nowadays it's okay for 'the word' to be yelled across the school yard and down the halls, but don't let the kids see it in print.
      That makes perfect sense! :-(
      Excellent, Abwilliams, as always. I can't help but think about one of my favorite childhood books: Huckleberry Finn. It's banned in many school districts because of the language in it. What's overlooked: Twain is one of our greatest writers. He really chronicled the attitudes of that time. His language is no worse than what I hear in rap music sometimes.
      We read the book in school with appropriate guidance. Our teacher said, "This particular word - don't use it in public. It's disrespectful and insulting." Well, now, I hear that word every time I walk down the street. Twain would probably blush and offer these guys writing lessons.
      Shakespear used words that were profane during his time and we still read those plays and stories.
      I understand completely: we must keep our classics alive.
      General Kelly's powerful speech, message, lesson...whatever you wish to call it, goes hand in hand with this article.
      I hope that my message will be considered, but moreso, that his message will be heeded!
