Top 10 Causes of Global Warming and Climate Change

Updated on September 15, 2014

Have you noticed hotter summers and colder winters? You are not alone my friend since such experience is common across the globe. Global warming or as a whole climate change is a worldwide issue that is capable of introducing devastating effects to us but seems to be neglected. Although it’s a usual topic nowadays and campaigns to at least lessen its impacts are done, there seems to be something lacking.

Like any kind of problem, global warming should be addressed by first determining its roots. A good knowledge about what caused this dilemma will make it easier for us to pinpoint the needed steps in dealing with it effectively. I recently seen a video about global warming and it struck me. I was so inspired that I spent almost a whole day to know more about the issue and be aware about the things that led it to us. Please spend some time to browse through this list of the Top 10 Causes of Global Warming and Climate Change and be stunned about the reality that I discovered.

Life here on earth is possible because of the sun but it can also take it all away.
Life here on earth is possible because of the sun but it can also take it all away.

Our sun, like any other star in the universe, won’t last forever. Sooner or later, it will burn out and die along with our precious planet. Although we are lucky enough to not witness this frightening catastrophe, we are slowly experiencing its effects as early as now.

Both the decrease and increase of solar activity won’t be good for us. The first caused Ice Age millions of years ago while the latter is expected to bring upon global warming which I fear is slowly manifesting. Sadly, this is something we simply can’t control. Let’s just all pray that our sun will rise and shine like the usual tomorrow and the days to come.

Our wastes if not well disposed can lead to a long list of consequences.
Our wastes if not well disposed can lead to a long list of consequences.

Improper waste management is another worsening worldwide problem and it is somehow closely linked to global warming. Instead of considering the three R’s of responsible waste management which are reuse, reduce, and recycle, most of us tend to follow the easier path which is burning our trash. This solution might get the job done in no time and provide visible results but it’s greatly affecting our environment in a much larger scale than we imagine. Fumes from burning contain excessive amounts of carbon dioxide that can stock up in our atmosphere and eventually builds huge smog that can trap heat. Of course burning a few papers and plastic cans won’t do so much. Or maybe not! What if millions of people worldwide are thinking the same way as you? It’s true that global warming is a serious and complex problem but solving it is possible through simple acts and changes. Start the transformation on yourself and let your actions be the bridge to communicate with your family and the whole community.

The world population is increasing in an alarming rate as we speak.
The world population is increasing in an alarming rate as we speak.

Our body excretes heat regardless if we’re staying still or being active. With this simple fact at hand, it’s easy to conclude that more people would mean a hotter world. And sad to say, the worldwide population has drastically increased over the years. If nothing is done to at least control it, I simply can’t imagine how the future Earth would look like. Effective family planning methods have been developed but they are mere concepts if not accompanied with discipline. We should set aside our selfish intentions and think of the future generation who will be the one to suffer if ever the ballooning of our population won’t be stopped.

It took nature decades of pampering to make these forests possible and we simply take them all down in a matter of days.

Plants and trees play a crucial role in maintaining Earth’s temperature. They are also our source of fresh air and the number one natural solution in dealing with our carbon dioxide abundance problem. But instead of treating them with respect and outmost care, we did the opposite. Thousand acres of forests which were once filled with vegetation and skyscraping trees are now barren and lifeless due to unregulated logging. It’s like betraying a loyal friend who has been supporting us ever since the start of our existence and now we are paying the price. Is it too late? Definitely not! Our generation can still do something about it but let me tell you that a simple FACEBOOK LIKE wont’ do any good. Go out there and move! I just signed up to a tree planting activity that our municipality is organizing two months from now and I hope you should do so as well. I know planting a couple of seedlings won’t do so much but at least we are doing something to makeup to the crimes we did against our forests.

New houses and buildings for us often means homeless wildlife and cutting down oxygen-giving trees.

It’s pretty obvious. More houses and buildings means more forests are cleared out and more trees are cut for construction purposes. Although having skyscrapers is an indication of economic growth, we fail to consider its disadvantages. But how can we address this problem if the world’s population is aggressively increasing as we speak? Since we can’t avoid expansion, we should focus on limiting it as much as possible. We should get the most out of the current land area we are occupying while protecting our virgin forests. With the present technology advancements, this goal is very achievable. Why not build cities high up in the sky? Or create more manmade islands? I’m still hopeful that the great minds of our generation can come up with innovational ideas so we can cause minimal negative effects to our environment while enjoying the fruits of industrial development.

Air pollution already reached the red flag decades ago yet we still hesitate to take a full course action in dealing with it.

When I was just a kid, there’s nothing I can see from a colorful plastic robot toy other than the limitless games I can do with it. I really miss my innocence but since it’s something that I can’t bring back, I have no choice but to face reality. After being aware about how industries particularly factories work, I’m now questioning the existence of toys and other plastic products. It’s true that they require less time to build and are quite durable, but have we cared to look at their negative impact in our environment. Try to visit the nearest beach and you’ll likely stumble upon a floating plastic bottle. The alarming part is that if not picked, this garbage will remain in the open sea for ages endangering our delicate water ecosystem. So what does it have to do with global warming? Aside from the possibility of aggravating our worldwide garbage crisis, we should be reminded that every plastic product is made through molding. The smoke generated in this process contains enormous amounts of carbon dioxide which as we know is one of the leading greenhouse gasses to date.

Excited to purchase a new car? Think again.
Excited to purchase a new car? Think again.

Is several minutes of comfort worth the suffering a whole generation? You should think about this before starting your car to go to work which is just a few blocks away. The invention of cars highly impacted our civilization. It made transportation of goods a lot easier and travels less time consuming. These comforts are so enticing and enjoyable that we eventually forgot the consequences that came with new-age transportation and now we’re slowly paying its price. Is there something we can do to revert or at least lessen its effects? Good news is that there is and it can be done by simply being wise in using our technologies and embracing small sacrifices for the benefit of the future generation.

We can't empower the body without the mind urging it to do so.

Who would care and leave what they’re doing just to listen to a brief talk about global warming? It’s not that we totally don’t care but most of us are simply too busy on other things we think should be given more priority. Some are studying for their upcoming exams, others are preparing for their job interviews, while a few are doing their best to fix a broken relationship. There’s no problem at all if you consider these things more relevant but just don’t forget your responsibility as a human being which is to take care of Mother Earth. It’s currently the only livable planet we know in the whole universe so it’s technically irreplaceable. Don’t worry since it will only take a few minutes to increase your awareness about global warming and a little more to share it with others. The fact that you’re reading this hub is definitely a good start and I salute you for it!

Don't be like this rock. Move and do something for Mother Earth!
Don't be like this rock. Move and do something for Mother Earth!

Over the years, thousands of global warming awareness campaigns have been started yet only a few among the billions of affected individuals across the globe, which is basically all of us, responded. It’s a shame because if only the majority acted a few years back even with just a simple change in our lifestyle geared for the benefit of our environment; we may be already enjoying its awesome effects now. Of course it’s never too late. Our generation can still implement a considerable change and might even totally get rid of global warming if we choose to be resilient with our goals and act as one. It may sound too cliché but there’s really no other solution to this global problem than neutralizing it with a global movement.

Some say it's human nature. I say it's a product of our own doing.
Some say it's human nature. I say it's a product of our own doing.

History has proven that we don’t simply take what we need and leave. We stay, build, abuse, and take everything out of a resource until it’s all used up. Previous and current wars are nothing but implications of our insatiable hunger for power. I too am guilty of having such kind of innate drive to conquer the world and own it all. But are we born this way? I think not. Our current competitive society molded and taught us to be a survivor, endlessly hungry, and dangerous. It geared our minds to think about only those that are beneficial to us and selfishly disregard the possible negative outcomes of our actions. It’s kind of dark right? Nevertheless, I still believe that humanity as a whole is destined for greatness. We are granted the gift of knowledge to be caretakers of Earth to begin with so all we need to do is utilize what we already have to accomplish the task. We should start by self-evaluation. Ask yourself, when was the last time you did something for our environment? When do you plan to start or do it again? Contemplate your everyday activities and come up with changes that can somehow help ease the burden of Mother Nature. Never forget that no act is little enough to be considered ignorable since even your smallest effort to lift a piece of trash and dunk it to a garbage bin counts!
