Trust Me! Would I Lie to You? ~ A Poem About Politicians
Suppose you were a member of Congress. And suppose you were an idiot. But I repeat myself.— Mark Twain
Do you trust your politicians? It seems they will promise everything to win your votes when they are on the campaign trail only to break most or all their promises when they get elected. Politicians seem to spend most of their waking hours attacking everything their opposition does or says, rather than coming up with viable alternatives or policies themselves.
They hope the other party will shoot themselves in the foot and lose the public vote, rather than be bothered trying to win it themselves. In recent times this seems to be working, and the image of politicians has become even more tainted (I didn't think that possible.) US politics gets most of the world headlines, but believe me, none of this is exclusive to America. I know it is a similar situation here in Australia, Britain and elsewhere.
This poem is a typical example of political promises.
It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.— Mark Twain
I'll look after you,
Make health care free.
I'll fix the economy.
A good education for every child,
That's the key.
I'll reduce taxes for all.
I'll bring our troops home,
And cut defence spending.
No more foreign intervention.
I'll create more jobs,
Get people off the streets.
I'll protect the environment,
Reverse climate change, you'll see.
Reduce fossil fuel dependence.
I'll acknowledge our Indigenous,
Stop mass shootings and bombings.
If you want a better lifestyle,
And care about your country.
I give you my promise,
Vote for me. Trust me!
