The flag of the United States is among our nation's most recognizable symbols. We love "Old Glory!" As you travel the U.S.A., you will see it most frequently displayed. Rattlesnake Emblen on Colonial FlagThe rattlesnake insignia was most appealing. American patriots favored this native New World creature as a fitting symbol for their cause because they would not strike unless provoked—and would give just warning first.

Grabd Union Flag - New Year's Day 1776The soldiers of the Continental Army gathering on New Year's Day 1776 brought their own individual local flags—but they were sworn to fight as one under General George Washington and to bring honor to the new flag. Combining British crosses with the red and white stripes of the Colonies showed that there was still hope for resolution, it was known as the Grand Union Flag.

Captain John Paul Jones's Flag
The captain of the British ship Serapu insisted, "Will you surrender? " Jones's reply: "I have not yet begun to fight! " Jones won, only to see his ship sink the next day. In his diary he wrote, "The very last vestige mortal eyes ever saw of the Bon Homme Richard was the defiant waving of her unconquered and unstricken flag as she went down. And as I had given them the good old ship for their sepulchre, I now bequeathed to my immortal dead the Flag they had so desperately defended, for their winding sheet."
