Besides administrative functions, the UN has its main objective to establish peace.

UN Peace Keeping Mission:

After establishment in 1945 the UN conducted as many as 47 peace keeping missions where near about two thousand peace keeper soldiers died. Man power equipment and other resources were supplied by 180 countries of the world. At present soldiers of 71 countries are employed to undertake peace keeping operations. The following are the ongoing operations of the UN:

  • UNPROFOR in Croetia
  • UNMLOF in Yugoslavia
  • UNOSOM in Somalia
  • UNAME in Rwanda
  • UNOMOZ in Mozambique
  • UNIPROFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • KEFOR in Kosova
  • INTERFET in East Timor
  • UNGOMAP in Afghanistan, etc.

Evaluation of Peace Keeping Mission:

The UN keeps its operational jobs to sustain peace in troubled areas. In fact, the world today is like a smoldering volcano. Racial feuds, cross border terrorism, terror attacks, mutual jealousies, aggressive designs towards one another, extremist armed operations are increasing day by day. Considering the gravity of the crises and problems the UN deploy forces and conduct the peace keeping activities to restore peace and harmony. Its failures are due to the violation of pacts of the conflicting and warring groups. The UN is an organization and the super power countries are responsible to uphold the charters to achieve its aim. It devises the mandate, provides broad guidelines and secures financing from among member states for peace keeping operations. Due to the operations of UN, peace has been established in many places of the world. In many of those places, there was disaster before UN interrupted. Through their peacekeeping mission, UN is trying heart and soul to make the world a better place to live in. They have tried and are still trying to ensure that human rights are protected. It is because without protecting human rights, it is possible to make the place a good place for living.

War Causes Anarchy:

The outbreak of war violently disturbs the normal life of people. Educational institutions become empty, trade and industry get paralyzed and factories work day and night to produce only implements of war. Literature and fine arts get stifled and science becomes a servant not of life but of death. There areas chronic scarcity of the necessaries of life, prices soar and rationing is strictly enforced. Every day the morning paper brings starting news from the war front and people live in a state of extreme nervous tension. Worry, disquiet, suspense fill every mind. Peace and happiness seem to be practically dead and demoniac forces alone are at work.
A modern war has indeed become such a serious menace to life and peace that it has set the world thinking. Damages and atrocities in Iran-Iraq war, in Iraq-Kuwait war, in Afghanistan war, in Kargil war between India and Pakistan, in Iraq war baffled the nations and mane the world communities worried about the existence of peaceful life in the concerned regions.
Again, when someone of some groups of nations want to establish their own rule and are deprived of the legitimate rights they go for war as a last resort. This type of war we called war of liberation. No one can deny the history of War of the French Revolution, Independence War of America against Great Britain, War for self-Rule and Self Protection of Vietnam.
Real people get killed in the real war. Real widows mourn for their flag-wrapped buried husbands and someone's young children drop the very real tears.
Global peace is essential for the existence of mankind. Peace is highly required for every nation. But the achievement of peace is far from satisfactory. This is because of the intervention of the big powers. The UN has restored peace and harmony in many places. The UN still appears like a savior radiant with hope and optimism. We wish the UN long life and success in achieving peace.

Sustainability of Environment:

As UN operates with large number of civilian, military and police, so a large number of logistical support is required. In most of these cases, the operating personnel have very little infrastructure. As a result, they produce a lot of solids and liquids which needs to be disposed clearly. Otherwise the operated areas will be polluted greatly and instead of establishing peace, there will be environmental imbalance which will make the people of those areas ill. That’s why UN is now developing sectors that are working to how they can ensure environmental sustainability in the operated areas. By doing so, they want to not only maintain peace but ensure a good environment so that people can stay in good health conditions.

So all of us should praise the role of UN for their peacekeeping mission and we should try our best from our point of view. We hope that the world will be a good place with their mission and we will be able to leave in peace.

Excellent article on the UN and war. I disagree that peace is not forthcoming because of the intervention of the big powers. It's the big powers(the USA)that does most of the dirty work for the UN. I think the UN is a failure. Where's the peace? I don't have any easy answers either.

Very good and interesting hub, Breathing, you have done your research. But for this world, for now, I don't see any other option but to fight those who try to oppress others. Thank you for the follow.

As food and water become more scarce, the UN will be stretched to the limit, especially as UN member countries have to face their own food and water problems.
