Vitamin Angels

Updated on September 25, 2011

Vitamin Angels, Who Are They?

Vitamin Angels was established in 1994.  Vitamin Angels is the only charitable organization in the world that is solely dedicated to providing basic nutrition to people in need, with no borders and no boundaries.

Their strategy is simple:  We connect the people with the greatest resources to the people with the greatest need.  Last year, they distributed over 100 million supplements to children and families in 40 countries around the world.

Vitamin Angels has a proven track record of getting specific, measurable results.  In the past 12 years, they’ve prevented millions of children from going blind.  But they do more than just distribute supplements.  They also provide Health education and support grassroots community programs that promote self sufficiency -  so fewer supplements will be needed in the future.

Because they’re a grassroots organization, Vitamin Angels is remarkably efficient.  Their administrative budget is less than 5% of their total donations they receive – which means that your contribution goes right where it’s needed.

Save A Child For As Little As 25 Cents

What They Believe

At Vitamin Angels, They believe that everyone has a right to basic nutrition, that vitamin deficiency was diseases are preventable, and that education --- in addition to supplementation --- is the key to long term health.

Their vision is to create a world where expecting mothers get the nutrition they need to deliver healthy babies, where not a single child goes blind due to a simple vitamin deficiency, and where adults and children are free from easily preventable deficiency diseases.

What They Do

Vitamin Angels works at the village level to educate families on proper nutrition and to deliver life-giving nutritional supplements. They have five core programs:

1. Operation 20/20

Every year, up to 500,000 children go blind from vitamin A deficiency. Tens of millions more are at risk. Vitamin Angels has a set goal of eliminating childhood blindness by the year 2020. Just two high dose Vitamin A capsules given to a child each year will prevent that child from losing his or her sight forever.

2. Children's Nutrition Program

In developing countries, infants and children are at high risk for malnutrition, which can result in crippling diseases, and, in the worst cases, death. Their Childhood Nutrition program donates nutritional supplements to facilities and health projects providing care to children in more than 35 countries yearly.

3. Maternal Health and Well Being

Over four million newborn babies die each year, and millions more women and babies suffer the debilitating and lifelong consequences of ill health. By delivering prenatal vitamins which contain the vitally important nutrients folic acid and iron to women around the world, their Prenatal Project reduces maternal and child mortality, birth defects and ailments causes by nutritional deficiencies.

4. Disaster Relief

When natural disasters strike, loss of income, limited access to food and lack of dietary variety contribute to widespread micronutrient deficiencies. This causes a dramatic increase in the incidence of deficiency diseases such as anemia, scurvy, beriberi and pellagra. Armed with nutritional supplements, Vitamin Angels enters disaster zones quickly to prevent these diseases before they start.

5. Custom Programs

In addition to the four programs above, Vitamin Angels also develops custom programs for specific areas, such as their Tibetan Children's Project, which has distributed millions of nutritional supplements to children throughout Tibet, and their Honduras Multivitamin Campaign which distributes multiple vitamins and deworming medicine to 55,000 children in rural Honduras.

The Power of One

Bombarded with stories of hunger, disease and desperation, you may wonder what one individual can do. Vitamin Angels can give you a very specific answer. Just 25 cents can save a child from going blind, and for not much more you can save a village. See for yourself what your valuable donations can do:

$250 can save a small village (1,000 children) $1,000 can save a large village (4,000 children) $10,000 can save a school district (40,000 children) $25,000 can save a city (100,000 children) $50,000 can save a state (200,000 children) $250,000 can save a country (1,000,000 children)Donations are also gladly accepted in the form of nutritional supplements, particulary children's chewable multivitamins, adult multivitamins, vitamin A capsules and prenatal formulas from vitamin manufacturers.

Consider Giving Today

When you think about as little as 25 cents being able to keep a child from going blind, what are you waiting for.

Donate today and help to make a direct difference in the health and quality of life in those that are in need.

I went to create a lens on the Vitamin Angels to add to my "Zorbitz - Lucky Karma Beads" only to discover that you've already done it.

I am always a bit stunned at the statics on the number of children going blind every time I have to give the Vitamin A lecture in my nutrition class.

Great cause. I hope we can get it as an official Squidoo Charity Partner.
